I just finished "Murder at Hadfield Hall" by Peter Jay Black, and wow, what a ride! 🎢 I have to say, this book was such a delightful mix of mystery, humor, and good old-fashioned fun. I’m giving it a solid four stars!
So here's the scoop: Ruth Morgan and her grandson, Greg, get invited to this supposedly thrilling and spooky event at a theme park. They’re all set for an unforgettable weekend, but things take a serious turn when their host—a bit paranoid and determined to catch his sister’s killer—decides to spice things up with some wild games. As these challenges unfold, it quickly becomes clear that the stakes are far higher than they bargained for. It’s like a twisted version of a scavenger hunt where every clue could lead to danger. Talk about raising the suspense! Can Ruth and Greg survive the weekend and unravel the mystery before it’s too late?
Now, let's talk about what I loved most. First off, can we take a moment to appreciate the exclusive limited edition eBook cover? The dynamic between Ruth and Greg is just delightful—they're such a charming duo! The writing is crisp, the settings are vividly described, and the characters are well-developed. Another well put together mystery -- lots of red herrings here and some fairly complex puzzles. Some of the clues were a bit 'out there' and not really something the reader could figure out on their own. And I have to say the solution was a bit anti-climactic. Not illogical or anything, just sort of 'is that it?'
Ruth is a smart cookie for sure, but I wish the author didn't continuously poke fun at her driving skills. And I don't need to hear any more about how her grandson Greg could 'eat for England'. We get it: he's a teenager with a good appetite. But, in fact, he was much more relatable and portrayed less as a scared, whiny teen in this book.
Unfortunately, the most interesting part for me, having to do with the discovery of Roman mosaics and artifacts, was basically just glossed over. I would have been happier if it had been a bigger part of the solution so Greg could have had some input and been more than just a sideman/clown/foil for Ruth's needling.
I just finished reading the entire series Ruth Morgan Mysteries and I totally enjoyed each book. I love the character Ruth Morgan and her grandson. I would love to travel with my grandson solving mysteries, meeting quirky people and living life. Thank you for writing this totally enjoyable series. KathyB
Wow! What a brilliant story. So many twists to it but looking back I should have realised because the clues were all there. I couldn't stop reading it, always the sign of a good book. I wonder where the motorhome will take us next ? I hope it gets there soon !
An enjoyable murder mystery that kept me guessing. I liked the country house setting and trying to work out who was behind it all. A good, easy read and another enjoyable Ruth Morgan story.
