For fans of dazzling urban fantasy fiction like Crescent City, House of Devils and the Legacy series, with a smattering of Ilona Andrews' humour and Zodiac Academy's dramatic elemental magic system.
The gods are long gone, but what of their magic?
A Disaster Heir
Iskra Adastra, the new heir to the Nexus throne is still reeling from the catastrophic fire that claimed the life of her older brother. Always the sparkling spare and nothing more, Iskra is thrust into a life of responsibility she wasn’t prepared for. An emergence of volatile elemental magic lights the match which threatens to bring her world tumbling down further. Can the shadowy organisation tracking her every move offer her a way out, or does Luca, the new guard she can’t stop thinking about, pose an intriguing third option?
A Killer in the Dark
Selene Nightlock is used to a life in the shade. Being the Guardian of the Order of Shadows, it comes with the job. Stalked by her own personal monster, and tormented by a killer long on the loose, Selene’s hard-won peace balances on a knife-edge. Can she catch the Celestrea Slayer, and protect her family before her past finally catches up with her?
All the Flames Found is a second world contemporary,urban-style fantasy romance with elements of classic paranormal romance which follows the two women as their lives collide. Witness their fight to carve out their own place in the chaotic world of Cosmordia and try to mend all their fractured pieces along the way.
Please rest assured, our two chaotic and often messy FMCs will each get their own happily ever afters by series' end, but there may be many bumps in the road until they reach them.
I loved this!!! Honestly more than I thought I might. I expected to like it, but my deep investment in the plot and characters really took me by surprise.
Full disclosure, the author is a friend of mine, and I proofread the book for her (so I read nearly the final version, and helped to shape the final version!). I promise anything I say in this review is the honest truth, and not just gassing up my friend. Though that is an excellent perk. I'm so proud of her and so impressed with this world and story she was able to dream up.
This book is described by the author mainly as urban fantasy romance, but I personally found it quite genre-defying. The romance was present, but not at the forefront (for now). It is definitely tropey, as both fantasy and romance usually are, but in this book, some of the typical tropes are completely flipped on their head. Making for a surprising and refreshing take on this popular genre! More than the romance, I think the main themes here were of personal self-discovery and healing from grief and trauma. This book got quite dark, but I really appreciated that about it - it didn't pull punches and it didn't shy away from some extremely real topics.
The thing that surprised me the most was the prevalence of an absolutely thrilling murder mystery plot! I was aware there would be one in this story, but was honestly expecting it to be a subplot. It turned out to be absolutely essential to every other part of the story, and was so much fun to follow. I can become a wild theorizer when dealing with a mystery plot, and I had a blast with the well-laid hints here. I ended up guessing a lot of the right things (which was super fun for me), but it still had me unsure right up until the reveals! And some things still shocked me, which I also love. I was truly on the edge of my seat for the entire 2nd half of the book.
I think most "urban fantasy" takes place in our world with magic, but this is an entirely new - rich, expansive, and immersive - world. It's so detailed and well thought out, but didn't become overwhelming. The foundations are quite simple, being based in elemental magic (plus darkness, light, and knowledge), with species and land dedicated to each. The lore, the magic, and the ways the different species interact with each other are what bring the world to life. The politics in this story are pretty on the nose with our current climate in this world, but for the most part it felt relatable instead of trite. There is also a lot of diversity in the wide array of characters, which I loved to see.
Lastly, I really fell for these characters! The two FMCs are so flawed and messy, going through so much, and they make mistakes that cause problems for far more than just themselves. But even if you're exasperated with them, you understand each action they take because they are built so well. And you root for them to succeed, because they are good people with pure intentions, and they didn't deserve the situations they've been put in. Apart from them, there is also a really endearing found (or forced? lol) family dynamic that I can't wait to get more of. And the romances... let's just say they went places I didn't expect. 👀 In such a good way. And I am beyond excited to see what winding paths they may take in the rest of the series.
I don't really have big complaints, just things keeping it from a higher rating. As is typical of the genre, the writing is rather bare bones. At times, a bit confusing, but most questions I had were revealed in time. I do love some gorgeous prose, but I don't need it as long as the story is told well and the characters make me feel things. And that was accomplished here. At the end of the day, I rate for the genre that it is, and this is an exceptional fantasy romance (which just isn't one of my top genres).
I've probably rambled a lot here. I just really wanted to put out a thorough review to help hype this book up before its upcoming ARC release!! (Plus, I wanted to have a decent "script" to draw from for an eventual video review.)
I loved this book, I love the author, and I'm so thankful I got to be a part of it!
PLOT: Crown Princess Iskra, racked with guilt over the death of her older brother, struggles to control the fire magic she should not have, while Selene, keeper of shadow magic, tries to help her. She struggles against the echoes of a cruelty that she thought long-dead, and an ancient evil stirs to try and ensnare them both.
TROPES: Elemental Magic, Magical Police/Guardians, Vessels for God Powers, Magical Training, Hurt/Comfort, Found Family
SPICE: 2/5
CLIFFHANGER: 7/10
I enjoyed the second half of this book a lot. The first half was mainly set up, which isn't a bad thing, nor was it hard to read or anything, but once the pieces were in place, and the author set them all in motion, things got a lot more exciting. I thought the main villain was fairly obvious from the minute he was introduced, but only to me as someone whose read hundreds of these types of books. I had zero problem with everybody around him trusting him in the story, because if I had been one of those people, that's what I would have done, too.
He did a pretty standard villain monologue at the end, but everything is set up very nicely for a fun book 2, which I will absolutely want to read when it's available!
My heart breaks for both Iskra and Selene, but most especially for Selene. What she has to face at the end has left her shattered, and I can only hope that she can find strength to carry on with the love of Maddox and the friendship of Iskra.
I thought this was a good read with a lot of potential. Initially, I didn’t feel very connected to the story, and I think the urban fantasy setting could’ve used a bit more world-building. I just wish the writing had a bit more depth to it. I wanted to feel more immersed in the world and connected to the characters. Once I hit the 60–70% mark, though, I was fully engaged. That’s when most of the action kicked in, and I enjoyed the ending the most. It was a little predictable, but I still enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed both of our FMCs. They’re both resilient and strong in their own ways. Initially, I thought Iskra was a bit too trusting, but it was really just that one person she opened up to so quickly. Selene has been through a lot, and I hope we get to dive into her past more in the next book to see how she became so fierce. I also hope we get more Aiden in book two because he’s such an intriguing character, and I felt some good chemistry there!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
All the Flames found is a dual POV following to the FMC Iskra and Selene.
Iskra is the new heir to the Nexus throne following the tragic death of her beloved older brother. But her grief isn't the only thing she is contending with. She is also hiding elemental powers, powers that that her fellow humans hate. Struggling to keep control of her new found powers she is asked to join the wrath to learn control.
Selene along with the wrath must train Iskra so they can fight against an unseen threat whilst also trying to solve a spate of strange murders.
This book was very reminiscent of Crescent City. Despite the information overload at the start for the world building I was hooked in early. This was an easy read without it feeling 2 dimensional. I really like both FMCs though I will admit Iskra's willingness to trust was a bit frustrating at times.
I'm disappointed this isn't released until Januray 27 as I'll have to wait until then for it to gain traction so I can look up theories! Very excited to see where the next book takes us.
Iskra Adastra was always the sparkling spare, and I felt her grief rawly as she was thrust into the Nexus throne after a catastrophic fire killed her older brother. Her volatile elemental magic lighting the match under her fragile new life, plus Luca, the guard she couldn’t stop thinking about, kept me hooked. Selene Nightlock, Guardian of the Order of Shadows, stalked by her own monster and hunting the Celestrea Slayer, grabbed me just as hard. The murder mystery turned out to be essential to everything, and I became a wild theorist, guessing some pieces while the reveals still shocked me. The world of Cosmordia is rich and immersive without overwhelming, with elemental magic and distinct species. Both heroines are messy and flawed, and I rooted for them through grief, trauma, and a darker tone that didn’t pull punches. The prose is a bit bare bones in places, but this found family world won me over.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you so much to the publisher and author for this ARC!!
I absolutely LOVED this book. I could not put it down! I'm really enjoying reading more urban fantasy and this did not disappoint.
The magic system, the story, the setting (loved the references to The Tube for UK gang) - everything just sucked me in and I was so invested in the characters from so early on in the book. My fave trope, found family, CHECK!
The dual POV was done in a way I have read before and I thought it was fantastic.
Cannot wait for the next installment - highly recommend!!
I DNF’d this book. From the very beginning this book just felt like Crescent City in a wig and a trench coat. It didn’t feel like I was reading anything new, just that I was reading the shadow of something I’ve already read.
Iskra didn’t feel like a complicated woman going through grief to me, she felt petulant. Also there were so many times I felt like I was being told something repeatedly rather than shown.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh take on an urban Romantasy. Everything about it felt new and different from a lot of current popular books in the genre. If you love magic and romance and murder mysteries this one is for you! Absolutely add this one to your TBR!
This book is filled with power, both personal power and power shared. That power makes for an engaging multi-pov story about finding yourself after loss.
Initially I had a hard time getting into the story. Urban fantasies have to be really fleshed out in order for me to buy into the “world”. As I continued the story felt like a high fantasy version of x-men which was kind of fun, but again I needed a bit more to get into the setting, characters and story.
