More or less a collection of hotels, restaurants and shops that have appeared in monocle magazine before. I never know exactly who the monocle audience is - but you can expect things to be more expensive than usual and bias towards European taste. There’s no recommendation to see a knicks game or walk around Coney Island.

Bad if you are on a budget or want to explore lesser known, more authentic places. There’s always a risk with a guide like this that if you follow it too closely you will miss genuinely really interesting things. So cherry pick a few things from each section and you’ve got a good start.

I was able to find a few bars, restaurants, bakeries, shops that I’d never heard of and I thought the ‘walks’ section is a fun, helpful addition. I like this guide because it assumes you know what you are doing and doesn’t waste time with the absolute basics. Like all guides bound to go out of date in a few years time. Quite a few typos and basic mistakes in the print too.

I missed new york a lot so i read this and I like the manner with which high end travel guides are written. I learnt that SOHO and tribeca are acronyms. I’d like to read their tokyo one next before i go.

Purposefully non touristy but good guide to the Big Apple. Ideal if you’ve been to NYC before but first timers should probably pick a different book as it assumes a level of knowledge.

Nice alternative travel guide which aims to stray away from touristic sites and ensure an experience like a local person. The hotel choices are a bit on the high end, but good selection of eateries, cultural activities, and a section on recommended walks in different districts.
