I took multiple of Dr. Varner's classes at TMU, so I understand that I may sound biased, but I assure you, it is not bias. I sincerely love this book.
The original edition of this book that I read back then was an extreme blessing. It helped form my understanding of the Old Testament and the entire Bible. It helped shape my understanding of the Person and work of Christ. It was an incredibly influential and important book for me.
I'm always picky on new editions of old books. I don't want to spend the extra money on a book when the revisions don't change enough to make it worth it. But this new edition absolutely worth the purchase, even if you have the original. The prayers at the end of each chapter match the exuberance of worship that I feel by the time I get there. It puts words to what is on my heart every time.
The revisions are perfect. Everything about this book requires a rereading and a purchasing. And for those who haven't read this or perhaps any of Dr. Varner's works: This is a great place to start. It will help clarify your understanding of so much of the Bible. It will edify you and encourage you. It will blow your mind with the insights you find into the Word of God.
The edition of the using the LSB is also fantastic.
This is such a perfect book to encapsulate the life-work of Dr. Varner. Decades of faithful work and influence from Dr. Varner shows that his work and material has stood the test of time, only refining over time.
My favorite of Dr. Varner's is still his Matthew commentary. But this one was always special for its impact on me. It's almost nostalgic. And this new edition makes it worth the full sticker price.
If you haven't read Dr. Varner before but maybe even heard about him, reading this will make you immediately see why he is so beloved by so many students over decades.
I ate up the original material 12+ years ago and I still ate this new edition up now. I read it even faster.
This is also the perfect book to show study if you want help on how to tell your Jewish friend that their Messiah has already come and offers them salvation today.
