After spending several years in boarding schools due to his single father’s busy schedule, Sheng Wang eagerly returns home only to learn that he would have to share it with his father’s girlfriend and her son. Will he be able to adjust to a new school, new classmates, a new curriculum… and a certain someone?
Quite slow on the start, this is the kind of book that will leave a small scratch in your heart. Mu Su Li truly is a great writer. She knows how to hook people in and leave them wanting more. We are still at the start of the story and have not gotten to even the romance, but you can feel the build-up for it.
With the book being adapted into a TV show, I wanted to give it another try as I remember having fond memories of it and boy I was not disappointed. Although it took me over a week to get into the very first chapters, now I am hooked and literally blew through the first book. One thing I still wish is for someone to pick up this book for an official English translation so I can get my hands on my own physical copy of it.
"All I know is every age has its season. If you don't go a little crazy when you're young, that's the regret you'll carry,"
I want to start with the physical book because I had a lot of thoughts about it while I was reading. I realized that Haitang really does seem to have a different style for each release. This one has a dust jacket that looks like it’s laminated, and it reminds me a lot of the one on Limerence. The actual cover underneath is harder to describe because it doesn’t feel like the usual cardstock. It also kind of bends outward, which makes it look a little weird when you look at it from the side. The cover art isn’t really the style I usually go for either, but there’s something about it that feels so comforting, so I ended up really liking it. Plus, it fits the overall feels of the volume. But the interior art? Oooh. I feel like this is a level up from Haitang’s releases I’ve read so far. I was so pleased every time I came across the illustrations. As for the actual story, I really love how slowly Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian’s relationship formed. There’s no rushing it, and I think that makes their interactions so much more enjoyable to read. This is definitely a slow burn, and there’s no romance or intimacy here yet, so if you’re looking for something where the characters fall for each other right away, this isn’t that kind of book.
I also kept thinking about the pressure that high achieving students deal with. Sa Ye gave me a little glimpse of that kind of pressure before because of JC, but here we get an entire class full of students dealing with it in different ways. Some work even harder, some get discouraged, and some let jealousy get the better of them and become vicious. I really like seeing that because, unfortunately, that feels very real. It actually made me think about myself when I was a student. I passed everything, but I honestly didn’t put that much effort into school. I’d go to class, listen, do whatever I needed to do, and then my biggest priority was finishing everything so I could watch anime and do whatever I wanted. It made me wonder what would’ve happened with my life if I had actually put in more effort back then. Sheng Wang is also such a great character to follow. He has his flaws, but I find him really interesting, and I genuinely enjoy reading about him. I’m also realizing that I apparently really like the stepbrothers trope. Who would have thought? I’d probably feel very weird about it in real life, but apparently I’m perfectly happy enjoying it in fiction. Mu Su Li is also making me appreciate her pacing more and more. I think this is the first modern slice of life from her that I’ve read, and I’m really enjoying it.
Oooh, and I really love where this volume ended. It left me curious enough that I immediately wanted the next volume, but not in a way that made me frustrated that I couldn’t keep reading. That’s such a good feeling. I finished it and just thought, okay, I need to know what happens next. I also really like how Mu Su Li balances all the sensory details with the dialogue. There’s enough description to make the scenes feel alive, but I never felt like the conversations were getting buried underneath it. And I have to mention the cicadas because WHY are there so many cicadas lately??? I feel like I keep running into them in novels, songs, and everything else I’m consuming. Why is it always the cicadas and not the crickets? Hmmm??? JK. Anyway, I really enjoyed spending time with these characters, especially Sheng Wang, and I’m very happy with how slowly everything is developing. This feels like the kind of story where I’m going to enjoy the little things along the way rather than constantly waiting for something huge to happen.
Note: Wait, I accidentally clicked wrong... we can do half stars now?
First read of the year!! ✨ Super cute and fluffy, the romance isn't quite there yet but the characters are well written and hilarious 😂 highly recommend if you want a fluffy and light hearted read
(read this in chi but review is in eng for convenience!)
WOWOWOWOWOW this is my first time reading any of 木蘇里's BLs and oh my god. the writing is absolute perfection. i am so glad i decided to pick up this series bc the first book alr has me in a chokehold 😭🫶🏻.
木蘇里's writing encapsulates the high school experience in a perfect blend of humour, camaraderie, and heartfelt moments - whether it'd be through gorgeous prose or internet memes - and all of the characters (yes, i mean all of them 🙂↕️) are fleshed out in their own ways.
盛望 is one of the sweetest and down-to-earth boys ever, and his unwavering dedication towards his studies adds depth to his already adorable self. 江添 starts off cold and indifferent, but slowly warms up to 盛望 (despite not wanting to admit that) and is the ultimate tsundere LOL. both of these male leads are super capable and intelligent (which makes the whole reading experience SO 😍😍 bc AHHHHH NERDS NERDING OUT), but also retain this softness to them that makes them extremely likeable and realistic.
A 班's students are also extremely well written and have unique personalities that defy the stereotypical characteristics of nerds (keep in mind that they're all in the TOP !!! class even tho they don't emphasise their intelligence 24/7 and are super humble), and their relationships with each other are so precious 🥺. their teachers are also super fun and quirky (esp 菁姐 and 何進 MY GOATS 😚) and the playful banter they share w/ their students is just too cute 😭.
i also have to continue praising 木蘇里's beautiful writing bc it flows so well and has SO MUCH emotion w/o using flowery language, and the interactions/inner monologues are so natural and teenager-esque LOL. her expert use of language really just ties the entire reading experience together and i found myself binging most of this book in one night HAHAHA.
this book is also HELLA SLOW BURN (YESSSSSS! MY FAV.) so there's no romance yet but i am SO excited to see how this progresses 😛
i will say that the first few chapters are a tad bit slow and kinda throws you into the story w/o knowing much, but PLEASE CONTINUE READING it is SO worth it in the end 😭🙏🏻. there are also LOADS of charas (and their respective goofy nicknames) so it was a bit troublesome to jot down who's who but over time, it'll make sense 🙂↕️.
gonna start the second book asap (matter of fact, i have alr started it as i'm writing this review LMAO) and i can't wait to see the romance blossom between my stubborn and oblivious babies 😌✌🏻.
So far so sweet. I love the slow development of their friendship. While both personalities are not yet fleshed out, you can already see them as who they are. The teachers and classmates are funny and add dynamics to the story.
