The vibrant city of Burlington is a perpetual hub of activity, with hordes of shoppers strolling up and down Church Street and groups of college students scattered about the lawns of UVM. Stop and listen to the stories of Queen City Ghostwalk guide Thea Lewis, and discover the ghostly shapes and spirits that appear among the throngs of the city’s living. Meet the mischievous poltergeist who haunts Converse Hall and the ghost of the Flynn Theater. Take a peek at peculiar happenings at the Firehouse Center or the old Howard Opera House. Lewis delivers plenty of chills with a strong dose of history and a pinch of humor.
I visited Burlington a few weeks ago, and started this book after I got back. Now I wish I’d started this book before the trip. (Maybe we’ll just have to back!) I enjoyed learning more about the history of Burlington through the ghost stories.
This book just is not thick enough. There are wonderful stories that Thea tells here, and like her other book "Ghosts: Legends of Lake Champlain", her tour tells some of these stories too. This is a wonderful book to read on a dark fall evening, with a drink next on the table next to you, with the house dark except for the 1 light you need to read by, and very quiet surroundings. You won't be disappointed.
I read this book after signing up to go on Thea's ghost tour. I'll admit I'm very skeptical about all this stuff but my travel buddy loves it so we usually partake in tours if they are available. It's obvious Thea has done hundreds if not thousands of these tours and knows how to entertain. Lots of stories in the book are repeated in her tour but that was fine with me. I enjoyed both this book and then meeting her in person. I recommend both!!
Another fun, Halloween book about supposedly ( and hopefully) haunted places in the local area. Little scary but a little cool to think that some of stories could be true
Very interesting collection of haunted areas/etc of Burlington, Vermont area. Quick and easy read, only 90-some pages. Love these Haunted America series of books from The History Press.
Live 20 minutes from Burlington Vt so this book grabbed my attention and held it through all the individual stories of some of the most haunted places in the city.
This is a collection of vingnettes about haunted houses in the city of Burlington. Thea Lewis does not provide as much detail as I would like and she is sometimes vague about her sources. I think my interest in this book was less about the hauntings and more about the history of some buildings in Burlingon.
The book is actually not about haunted houses, per se, but is about haunted locations, like noteable buildings and the characters who lived/worked there. It is strongly historical, but the publisher is The History Press, so it would have a strong history angle.
I like the way Thea Lewis writes, you can feel her deep love of history. However, I must complain that this book was way too short. I WANT more. I love the mixture of history and hauntings!
