The Lighthouse Box: A Mystery Box Romance

Rate this book
At the edge of the world, the sea gives back what you thought was lost forever.

Dan didn't take a job as an isolated lighthouse keeper for the romance of the sea. He took it to hide. Recently divorced and finally acknowledging the truth about his sexuality, Dan has built a fortress of physical labor, cold saltwater, and a strict routine on a storm-battered rock in the Pacific. He tends the beacon, guards the island’s columbarium, and ensures no one can ever get close enough to hurt him again.

But the island has a pulse of its own.

When Dan unearths a hidden journal belonging to an 1894 lighthouse keeper, he discovers a legacy of ancient, primal magic tied to the tides and male virility. Dismissing it as the ramblings of a lonely madman, Dan recklessly performs a ritual offering to the sea.

The ocean answers.

A mysterious, gorgeous man washes ashore in the midst of a violent gale. Feral, secretive, and claiming to be the tide itself, the stranger shatters Dan's carefully constructed solitude. As the two men are forced into close, intoxicating proximity, the undeniable sexual tension between them threatens to dismantle every wall Dan has spent years building.

The Lighthouse Box is an atmospheric, passionate M/M romance about grief, ancient sea magic, and the terrifying, beautiful vulnerability of finally letting someone in.

I just finished reading The Lighthouse Box, the fourth book in the Mystery Box Romance series by Wesley McCraw. I was fortunate enough to be given an ARC of this book, but this review is given voluntarily. As with the other books in this series, The Lighthouse Box is about a mysterious box that, when found, changes the lives of those who encounter it. In this story, one of those lives is that of a man named Daniel (Dan), recently divorced from his wife, working as a lighthouse keeper on an island off the Oregon coast, and beginning a new chapter in his life after finally acknowledging his true sexuality as a gay man. When a hidden journal is uncovered and a mysterious stranger shows up on Daniel’s doorstep during a heavy storm, both their lives change forever. With a bit of hurt/comfort, grief, a dose of ancient sea magic, and newfound romance, this story will take you on quite the ride.

Since I like to end things on a happy note, I’ll get the negatives out of the way first. First, there were some things that didn’t make sense to me. And other things were never explained, leaving me scratching my head. I can’t really get into details about these because they would all involve spoilers. I also found myself disconnecting a little with the idea of Dan becoming the “shaman” of Boner Island, especially since he was somewhat anti-social and inexperienced being with men.

Now for what I liked about this story. I liked the paranormal aspect of it, and how it flowed together well with the romance aspect of it. The reveal took me by surprise, so that was a nice twist. And even better, it added a new depth to the story, making the HEA even more sweet. I loved the main characters, though I felt slightly less of a connection with Daniel as he focused more on his shamanism. Aside from that, Daniel was such a caring man and really deserved happiness in his life. And as for “Ocean”, I found the mystery surrounding him intriguing, wanting to comfort him as we found out more about him. I also thought the secondary characters, the Salty Dog and her men, Cal, Hank, and Miller, to be quite likeable, especially how Cal turned out to be as supportive as he was when it was needed most.

The spice level was about a 2.5 out of 5, which is more than enough for me. Unfortunately, of the four books I’ve read in the Mystery Box Romance series, this was my least favorite, though just by a slight margin. Taking that into account, my rating fluctuated between a 6 and an 8, so I settled with a 7, rounded to a 4 for a 1-5 scale. An additional “thank-you” to the author for a beautifully illustrated cover that accurately depicts the main characters. I greatly appreciate it when authors do that.

This author is quickly becoming a favorite. His characters are so well crafted, they draw me in immediately and don’t release me until the end. The men are so realistic, I can picture them vividly in my mind, feel their emotions, and get wrapped up in their stories. The mysteries of the items in the stories have a magical aura about them that keep me engaged, wrapping my head around them, then finding some things I was thinking are actually something else. I find I like the surprises I get as I read these. I get so wrapped up in them, I find it hard to put down, even at 2am.

I really liked Daniel and could empathize with him on the loneliness and solitary life at the lighthouse. As a widow of seven years, it spoke to me in a lot of ways. I was so glad the sea sent Ocean to him (or did it —you need to decide as you read the book). It is an interesting question, giving the history of the island, which was also fascinating. I don’t want to give anything away, but Daniel and Ocean were exactly what each other needed, and their slowly developing relationship had me smiling quite often. Proximity has its advantages sometimes.

The world building around Daniel’s life as the Keeper of the lighthouse was fascinating. I had never thought about all the things that would need to be done routinely, if not daily, since whatever is on this rock is basically your survival for the time between supply boats. I also hadn’t really considered the danger inherent in some of the upkeep work. The columbarium under the lighthouse was a new idea for me, but it made a lot of sense for those who love the sea. I also wondered how long ago it had been established, and how often new “residents” arrived. I was also very interested in the information about the ocean, tides, and weather that was presented. I did live on a small island (with a bridge to the mainland—not the same, I know) and it brought back those times to me, the beach, the sea life, the waves and tides. It was a nice memory refresher.

I look forward to each new book from Wesley McCraw, knowing I will get a great MM romance, a fascinating mystery, and surprises along the way. I definitely recommend these books if romance and mystery are your thing.

3.5 stars ⭐️

From a story and setting perspective, I actually really enjoyed this one. The isolation of the island, the lighthouse, Dan’s work as a lighthouse keeper, the discovery of the old lighthouse keeper’s journal, and especially the mystery surrounding Ocean all worked really well for me. I was genuinely invested in finding out who he was and where the story was going.

And then we got to the phalluses. 😂

I swear I have never read the word phallus so many times in my life. Forty times? Fifty? At some point I was just like… okay, I GET IT. 😂

The whole mythology surrounding the island, the rituals, and Dan becoming the island’s shaman was… definitely not for me. The whole virility magic thing, with Dan enthusiastically putting the rituals into practice, took the story into a level of weirdness that lost me a bit. 😂 I could appreciate what the author was trying to do with the lore, but watching Dan incorporate all of that into his real life was simply too weird for me. But I can't say it wasn't original right?😂

And yet, somehow, underneath all of that weirdness, there was a really sweet romance.

The journey from lust to love happened pretty quickly, but I was willing to roll with it. Even the I love you came a little sooner than I would normally believe, but again… okay, let's roll with it. 😂 Because at the heart of this story are two lonely souls who desperately want love, acceptance, and someone to choose them, and seeing them find that in each other was genuinely lovely.

The intimacy was actually a TOP for me. ❤️‍🔥 There was something really tender about the way their relationship developed despite everything happening around them.

And can we talk about that cover?! 😍 It is incredible and absolutely fits the book and the characters. I love it.

So, ultimately, I had a good time. The mystery, the lighthouse setting, Ocean, the romance, and the HEA all worked for me. The shaman/ritual/phallic mythology side, however, had me questioning what exactly I was reading more than once. 😂

Still, watching these two desperate-for-love souls find each other and get their happy ending was worth the journey. ❤️

I received an advanced copy of this book via BookSirens and the author. What follows is my opinion.

I love how this author writes. The world he creates pulls you right in, capturing your imagination, and your attention. I could feel myself on that island with the waves, the wind, the smells, and the sounds.

I wrote that when I was just a few chapters into the book. I was captivated by the scenery and the atmosphere. Now, I've just finished reading the book, and I'm almost speechless. In a good way.

I've read every book in this series. Before reading this book, my favourite of the series was book three, The Motel Box. Not anymore. Now, I have two favourites!

The Lighthouse Box was a beautiful love story, and not just the human love story, but also a love story with nature, with the ocean, and with life itself. I loved the nature's alive, history's alive, magic's alive sort of atmosphere. It felt like anything could happen.

One of the many great things about this book is its unpredictability. Each book in this series includes a box, but in each book, the box is different, and it operates somewhat differently. On top of that, there are surprises you just don't see coming. I LOVE that! I love being surprised.

This book brought out all the feelings. I could feel the main character's isolation, his desolation. I could feel his hope, his love, his faith, his desperation to believe in something, his desperation to be loved, and I could feel his heartbreak, his anger, his joy, his peace. For me, that's what makes a great book. So, if it isn't already apparent, I totally and completely, recommend this book, and this series. If you love MM and you love surprises, don't wait. Read it now and enjoy.

Okay, this book was NOTHING like I expected, and I mean that in the best possible way. A lonely lighthouse, a man running from his past, an ancient journal, primal ocean magic, and a mysterious man literally washing ashore during a storm?!

Dan immediately pulled me in. He’s recently divorced, finally admitting the truth about his sexuality, and has basically decided that isolation is safer than ever allowing someone close enough to hurt him again. His lighthouse becomes his fortress, and I loved watching those carefully constructed walls start to crumble.
And then there’s the stranger, "Ocean"
Mysterious. Gorgeous. Feral. Completely unsettling in the most delicious way. And claiming to be the tide itself? Yeah… I was hooked. 😂

The atmosphere is probably my favourite part of this book. The storm-battered island, the relentless ocean, the lighthouse and that creepy old journal create this wonderfully eerie feeling where you’re never quite sure whether you’re reading a romance, a supernatural mystery, or the beginning of something much darker.

And the mythology surrounding the lighthouse and the sea? I ate that up. The idea that Dan accidentally awakens something ancient through a ritual offering gives the romance this bizarre, primal edge that makes the whole story feel different from a typical MM romance.

Just like the others in this series, this was a great read.

Daniel spent his life hiding from himself. Took a job to live a solitary existence. But the the ocean answered his heart and sent him Liam.

Liam is on the run but can't say anything. As he adjusts to Daniel's life on the island he also falls for the person he has deceived. But can they find a way to get past everything and have a life together? Guess you'll have to read the story to find out.

The characters are done very well and the world building is wonderful. A beautiful discovery of finding oneself and finding love in the most unlikely way. There are some steamy parts so therefore this is an 18+ read.

Dan’s journey of finally allowing himself to live honestly was one of my favourite parts of this story. I loved the isolated lighthouse setting and the strange connection between Dan, the sea, and the mysterious man who arrives during the storm. There’s a wonderful sense of atmosphere throughout, with the magic adding an intriguing layer to the romance.

The relationship also has plenty of emotional depth as both men carry secrets and reasons for keeping people at a distance. Watching Dan slowly let those walls come down made the romance feel especially rewarding. A beautifully atmospheric story about second chances, self-discovery, and finding love somewhere completely unexpected.

I don't know what i was expecting but it seriously went beyond my expectations. The book, the story, it just pulls you in. The book started out like a magical mystery then love and magic then heartache over the truth and the future but it all worked out after believing in the magic with everything he had and then showing it to others closest to him before it spread to others nd thanks to that belief and magic it helped alot of others and kept the lighthouse and island healthy and thriving along with our keeper. This book was so good and so funny, when it wasn't sad.

This is the fourth book in the Mystery Box series. This book follows Daniel a lighthouse keeper who is finally admitting after his divorce that he is gay. When he finds the mystery box as with the other books in the series it changes his life. A man shows up during a storm, Ocean and Dan share so many things. This paranormal romance is full of healing/comfort, new beginnings and the ending warmed my heart. This is a really great read.

I like this story because it had a little bit of magic in it which made it whimsical. The main character is likable because he has many dimensions and you do feel for him. I also like Ocean, who is mysterious and also seems like a good guy. They fit. I like their relationship. It is a slow burn, but very companionable. There is a strange thread throughout the book which makes it a little weird though. Overall, I liked it.

This story pulled me into a storyline I didn’t expect. Dan recently divorced takes a position at an isolated lighthouse. It is a chance to discover himself and his sexuality. While exploring the lighthouse he discovers a box of trinkets along with a journal from 1894 about tides, magic and love. Thinking the journal’s author was crazy he try’s a ritual. Then during a storm Liam washes ashore. Liam is on the run and doesn’t want anyone to know who he is. This is a romance, nice amount of spice, with mystery and magic.

I read the BookSirens ARC. This is my honest review:

This is an intensely solitary & horny (possibly not entirely sane) single POV story, but I liked the results once I got there. I did have to do a fair bit of skimming to get past the many details I didn't care about, and not a few repetitions of the keeper's state of lonely horniness. Probably lots of readers for this one, whereas I enjoyed The Motel Box infinitely more.

Dan is a lighthouse keeper, isolated from all except when deliveries come once a month. Starting to get cabin fever & thinking is this all worth it, he finds a hidden place & comes across the box & little trinkets & a journal from previous lighthouse keepers. He performs a ritual & the next day a man appears, Dan names him Ocean. Being a "newly" gay man, Dan's imagination runs wild & he & Ocean form a mutual respect for "friends with benefits". Low to no angst, secrets revealed, HEA. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I devoured this book. Daniel's chosen isolation, his loneliness, and the fragile hope and love that break through it kept me turning pages, desperate to know how it would all end. The ancient book and the old sea magic woven through the story were beautifully done, adding depth and atmosphere without overshadowing the characters.

I enjoyed this book. It explores the challenges that Dan faces, trying to hide from himself. From trying to conform to what was expected of him, his isolation on the island, to his wants to believe in the sea's offering. Dan goes through many emotions, fighting for love. This story brings some magic, and took turn I didn't expect.
I am looking forward to reading more book from this author!.

This whole series has been a trip, but the Lighthouse Box was the icing on the cake.

Dan becomes the keeper of the lighthouse on a remote island to escape a marriage he shouldn’t be in and his (sort of) closeted sexuality. But the island is a burden as much as it’s a blessing.

But when a mysterious man (with a box in tow) washes ashore, Dan’s life is unequivocally changed.

Much like the previous stories in this series, there were twists I could never have even imagined. For me, this one took a little longer to get off the ground, but the last 25% were a mind f*ck!

I generously received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
