Warning: This book is not for the faint of heart. If you deal with triggers, please read this book with caution. Material consists of adult content and BDSM. I was sent away for protection. Pulled from a world and forced into another, I lost myself on the way. No emotion. Only walls to hide feelings that were now masked behind a barrier. Matteo Santos opened my eyes. He helped me see through the darkness that consumed my soul. He breathed life into my lungs, gripping my heart until it beat again. With a darkness of his own, it haunted him, turning him into a beautiful Master of seduction and pain. Through trust and love, we would battle our pasts together. Before they took control...completely. "Not everything is as it seems." ~ Beautiful Pain
J.M. Walker, a Canadian author, is an Amazon bestseller who also hit USA Today with Wanted: An Outlaw Anthology. She loves all things books, pigs and lip gloss. She is happily married to the man who inspires all of her Heroes and continues to make her weak in the knees every single day.
"Above all, be the HEROINE of your own life..." ~ Nora Ephron
This unique love story focuses on sexual sadism and masochism. Marketa (Mae) and Matteo are two traumatized souls. They have been both sexually abused in the past having as a consequence Mae to become a masochist and Matteo a sadist. When Matteo meets Mae for the first time, he instantly recognizes her submissive nature and pursues her. In bed, their chemistry is explosive. Matteo soon becomes her Dom and Mae surrenders to his sadistic urges.
“Pain mixed with pleasure. Love mixed with power. Sadism mixed with masochism. I loved the man helping me lose control. I loved the man inflicting the pain on my body I had so desperately craved.” … “My body fell, my mind swallowed by the darkness. I gave in, comforted by the abyss of passion and seduction.” - Mae
Matteo, being a psychologist, tries to help and provide therapy to both of them via BDSM practice. Through trust and love, they would fight their demons.
“Matteo used my body until all I felt was him. Only him. Always him. No sex. Just pure and utter domination. He helped me shut off my mind. No thoughts. No emotions. No nightmares. Just him and I getting to know each other in the most intimate way possible. Mind controlled body. Body controlled soul. Soul controlled all and every emotion I had shut off years ago.” – Mae
This book is all about raw love, wild darkness and dark sexual desires.
“I found that I needed Marketa’s control. I needed her to erase the nightmares and replace them with dreams of her. She was my submissive on every sense of the word but she dominated my mind. My heart. My fucking soul.” - Matteo
I loved the book and the two main characters. This story was raw and gritty in so many ways. My only complaint about this great read is that I wish it was a little bit shorter and the ending didn’t feel rushed.
This book is not for all readers! I would only suggest reading it if you're okay with reading things like this. It definitely pushes the boundaries a bit, it’s bursting with steam and heat and doesn’t disappoint.
Matteo and Marketa....what can I say besides.....I LOVED THEM, THIS STORY AND EVERYTHING ABOUT Beautiful Pain.
Marketa is a woman living in dark sadness, never smiling or laughing. Her past haunts her in ways she can't move on from. Being abused by the hands of several men, have lead her to loving pain. She needs sexual domination to feel herself live. Knowing she needs this pain to feel love, she is ashamed and hides this from everyone.
Matteo, is dominating in every sense of the word. He lives for bringing pain to the woman under his hands, but he never feels love. They are just an object to him to keep the monsters inside him at bay.
Broken souls with horrible pasts, united with an intense attraction to dominance and submission. Matteo and Marketa connect on levels beyond words of sanity. Their need for each other's touch is powerful, but can if fight the demons inside each of their hearts and soul.
"I am the monster under your bed. The darkness creeping into your dreams. I am the cold shiver of fear gripping your spine."
Matteo thinks he can scare Marketa away because he has no self control in letting her go when he knows he should, before his demons break her even more.
Marketa does not scare and she fights Matteo tooth and nail to be under his dominance. While helping him overcome the darkness he can't fight his way out of alone.
"Do you ever sleep?" Marketa asked, her brows narrowing. "I sleep until I see her." I confessed. Look for me instead. When she shows up, I'll be there, protecting you."
What Marketa and Matteo do for each other is beautiful. Fighting their demons with love and dominance is really amazing and beyond any words I can think of. My brain does not think this way so this story just intrigued me from the start. How beautiful pain can break a persons darkness and bring love into their lives is fascinating.
Gorgeous story of just submitting to the man you love. Allowing him to know exactly what you need and how far to take you, to bring the both of you the kind of love and power to shatter the demons from within.
This book has many layers that have created the beasts inside both Matteo and Marketa.
Oh wow I'm speechless. I've just finished this book and it literally blew my mind. If I'm honest I was just expecting a boy meet girl kinda read. As I jumped into this book without reading the synopsis this book was a right shocker for me in a good way. I was literally gripped from start to finish. Apart from stopping to make dinner I had to read this in one sitting.
Matteo and Mae are two broken souls. Damaged from their horrific past they both don't have any hope of happiness. What's it like to feel unloved? To never laugh or smile? Then fate intervenes and they meet each other. Are they too damaged to heal? Can they be open and trust each other?
This book is an emotional roller coaster. The author wrote it in such a way that I felt these characters pain. I found myself holding my breath and gasping throughout.
I've got to admit that only for a blogger friend advised me not to I'd have jumped ahead and read the end. I felt as if my heart couldn't take any more. However after she talked me off that ledge I continued on. Then I needed her hand to hold towards the end. If you follow my reviews you know these feelings are rare for me.
Have I mentioned I literally screamed at my partner when he tried talking to me while reading this. I was nearing the end and needed peace so yes I ranted at him for peace and quiet lol
Make sure you read the warnings from the author first as this book contains triggers.
I've not read anything else by this author so I'm super happy she's got more books I can get my teeth into.
If your looking for a dark romance then I highly recommend this story.
Sooo much potential .. could've been much better . I felt like we were going in circles for most of the parts . Especially with what Matteo and Mae were feeling . Also , I was expecting some serious heavy BDSM kink and sadly I didn't get them . The fade to black sex scenes were not doing it for me either . Those were the moments I thought we would finally see Matteo's 'Monstrous' side . Sadly that never happened as well .
First I've read every single book JM has wrote and I was scared that Matteo and Mae wouldn't hold a candle to my love for Brett and Evie because they are one of all time favorite book couples of all time. But that fear was squashed within the first five percent of this book.
Mae oh lord sweet Mae. She is damaged, so very damaged. Her past made her a shell where she honestly wasn't only hiding emotion;she just didn't have any. And the things she craved because of her past, it just fit perfectly with Matteo.
"I was stuck. In time. In a place where I didn't belong."
And Matteo! Hot Mexican/Italian therapist twisted damaged soul himself. This man had things happen to him that no ALPHA male would ever would want and it changed him all the way down to his soul. "A darkness so strong..."
Mae and Matteo together... They are two shagged pieces and them and only them alone can help fix each other.
"I'm going to fuck you like I hate you."
This book twists and turns right when I thought I knew the end it gave me the damn u turn feeling I love a book to give me.
2.57 stars.. I have read a short novella from the author before, and it was fairly good.. But this one, it just had too much cheesiness which I couldn't just leave or bair it at all, the author hasn't come to all the conclusions of the story till it was so late and boring.. She was just jumping around the main points without explaining them as much.. What was worth two stars that there were some soft, sweet feelings which had gotten to my heart, especially the bond that was created between all the characters along the story
Oh how I loved this book! I was hoping we would get Matteo's story after being introduced to him and learning a little about his childhood in the Torn Trilogy, and I was not disappointed! I was sucked in from the very beginning and didn't want to put it down. This is a dark story for both Matteo and Mae, but I loved how they were both broken from similar pasts and used that to help each other. Their connection was at first glance and you could feel it grow. Neither one would give up on the other and they both brought something out in the other that no one else could. There were twists and turns and as soon as I thought I had everything figured out at the end... BOOM! Love when an author can surprise me. Their love story was everything I wanted it to be and more!
*I was given a copy of this book as a gift from Stephanie's Book Reports in exchange for an honest review.
5 stars for Beautiful Pain by J M Walker!! Wow! If I could give this book 10 stars I would! I loved it that much!! With that said, this book is the definition of Dark Erotica. It is filled with BDSM, so if that is something that you dislike, Do Not read this book!
After suffering a brutal attack, Marketa aka "Mae" goes through life with no emotion. She doesn't laugh, she doesn't smile, she just exists. That all changes when she comes face to face with Matteo Santos. While Matteo carries his own scars from his past, but maybe together he longs to help Mae overcome her past.
Matteo is about the sexiest, damaged alpha male there is, but you can't help but fall in love with him. While I was hoping he would heal Mae, I also found myself hoping that Mae would be able to put the pieces of his soul back together. The sexual chemistry between these two was so combustible I was afraid my Kindle was gonna go up in flames! If you are a fan of Dark Erotica, you should grab this one now!!
For myself it was just ok..Matteo states "I am the f**king Master and I am your Dom" When he acted liked a Dom after he would be apologizing to Mae for treating her roughly(which she loved)it went that way over and over again. The 'we need to talk" went on thru the whole book, I kept waiting and waiting for the "talk" and even thou his and her background came about I still felt that the talk never really happened. I just kept waiting for something....about 78% the story started to pick up but by that time I had no connection toward either of them. I never got Mae's background only that she was held by a group of men at a BDSM club,I needed more on why she was taken, how she got away, more on her mother and how she happened to be there and what was done to her, was she kept in a room then brought out? and more on Jacob, what did he have to do with this situation and did he contribute to Mae's pain? Was glad they got a HEA, and nothing to complain about the writing and I would read this author again. Just did not connect to this story....
Um.....I just didn't get it. I love a dark read but this was 80% of the same sex scenes. Then BAM! Fast forward to a very strange ending. A heart attack and schizophrenia in the last couple of chapters? Just not my thing.

For me this didn’t deliver on the promise of the ‘blurb’, though it had so much potential. Matteo is a psychologist with his own problems, and Mae, a young woman struggling to overcome the scars of her past. Though good in parts, I didn’t always feel the connection between the characters, and in places the story and time frame seemed to jump around. The narration told in alternating first person accounts, served to provide both perspectives, but in my opinion, was sometimes confusing as the characters worked through their own doubt and confusion, with inconsistencies between thoughts, feelings and actions. Dark and traumatic events that had affected them were alluded to, and there was some detail provided, but I didn’t feel these were fully explored or explained, and by the end, unless I somehow missed it, left questions unanswered. Disappointing.
I just finished Beautiful Pain I loved it! I'm gonna be honest here. This is what I was waiting for. We all know Matteo from the Torn trilogy (Brett's psychologist), he finally gets his story and it's a heart breaker. Him and Mae are both broken, having similar pasts that had tore them up but it ultimately brings them together. They will both heal but only together can that happen. It had me from the get go. I couldn't put the story down. The characters were relatable and had that vulnerability that made them so real to them. I also liked the secondary characters. They brought some good depth to the story. This is what I expected and more. I can't wait to see what's next!
Have you ever had a book that pulls you deep under, that it grabs your heart an twists it until the very end? That is what this book did to me, I know its just a book but the emotions that it invoked where devastating and beautiful all at the same time. You will laugh and cry but you will also get mad and want to punch someone! The feelings that I felt while reading this book where devastating and boy did I cry. J.M. Walker all of the books that I have read by you are truly amazing please don't every change the way you write!
Is wow! When I first started reading this book I thought it was like most books lately, two screwed people meeting and saving each other, but this was so much more.
The two main characters Mae and Matteo were so beautifully written and so relatable, my heart went out to them instantly. The storyline was so realistic, I felt more like I was ready a memoir than fiction. I absolutely loved it and recommend it highly.
Ugh. I can't explain how excited I was to read this one. From the synopsis to the mouthwatering cover and then to the title that has been in all sorts of feels. Because if you know me or what I read/write, you know the darker the better..
Jesus.
I don't know how i'll how through the review but here's hoping I can do at least a little justice to the beautifully heartbreaking, soulful and tearful story.
Review coming up... As soon as I get my emotions in check.
Beautiful Pain by JM Walker I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I met Dr. Santos in another series of JM’s. He was a hottie with a back story that needed to be told and explored. In my WILDEST dreams did I never ever expected to 1. Fall in love with a broken Sadist 2. Want to fix him and his lady Mae. Matteo is dark and brooding. PERIOD. The more you get to hear about his back story the more and more you fall in crazy love. He is dominant. He is alpha. He is sweet. He is gentle. He is BROKEN. Mae is the perfect woman for our Dom. She is submissive. She is a masochist. She has been destroyed by people she trusted. The two have such fears and insecurities but the other calms them and makes their vulnerability tolerable. It makes them fearful BUT push to make this work. They see the other as their missing half. Matteo thinks he will help Mae overcome her fears and anxieties when is truth her love is what will help him overcome his past and his triggers. This book is not for the faint at heart. They both have very traumatic past lives. There are lots of trigger associated with this book BUT it can show you how healing BDSM can be. It can give a person who has suffered hope. I loved the book and the characters. Their struggles are real. I enjoyed the story with all the plot twists and turns but the thing I loved the most was the chemistry I felt between these characters. I felt their love through the pages. I felt their fight and struggles. I felt their desire and hurt. I felt their angst and trauma at admitting everything to the one who could hurt them the most. The one that held their heart.
I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Beautiful Pain caught my attention the first time I saw it on Goodreads. I just love a dark book. The nitty gritty of it all and the beauty that comes from such dark things. J.M. Walker has done an amazing job bringing us through the good the bad and the ugly to what has got to be one of the most beautiful love stories I've read in a while.
Beautiful Pain grabbed my attention from the first chapter to the very last word. I had a hard time putting it down when I had to and thought about this book when I wasn't reading it. We are introduced to Mae or Marketa who is a waitress in her cousins restaurant and Matteo who is a psychiatrist. Each in their own right into sadism and masochism because of their pasts. They meet one night at the restaurant when Mae waits on Matteo. That meeting will start a love affair that is an emotional experience for the readers to sit back and delve into with open minds. It's dark and gritty and not to pretty because of their past, but the decide that together they can help each other overcome their pasts. I'm so anti spoiler I'm terrified of giving something away and ruining the book for someone.
It you like your books on the dark side, this is certainly a book you don't want to miss. If you've never read a book that has darker tones of sexual things that can happen to people in life this is the perfect book to be your first jump into that genre. I loved it and hated to see it end. But, alas it was a perfect ending. J.M. Walker has written an amazing book that you certainly do not want to miss. I look forward to reading many many more books from her.
JO, this was a different side of Matteo. One that I was happy to read, getting his own story was awesome. I loved Mae, Mae won my heart from the beginning to the end. I want more of Mae darn it. I honestly would love to see more of them soon rather than later wink, wink. Their chemistry was amazing, I swore I felt the electricity that they felt every time they touched each other. When we were introduced to both of their pasts all I wanted to do was hold both of them and just have them let it out, or talk it out. You rocked this like a hurricane and I hope to read more of them soon.
Wow! Beautiful Pain blew me away! From the start up to the last, I was hooked on this book. The story and the characters are amazing! Both are intense and you can't predict what will happen next to the story and can't conclude on your own, of the past of both characters, what will happen next and how will the story ends. JM Walker nailed it! My favorite parts of this book are: the 3/4 and onward chapters! Whew! Intense and mind-blowing! LOVED IT!
**Warning: if you don't like dark erotica, I suggest that you don't read this book.**
I'm not really sure where to begin with this review. I will tell you that this is a book I have been looking forward to since the Torn trilogy and it was worth the wait and then some. I simply love Matteo. His story is heart warming as well as heart breaking. Two broken souls from different but similar back grounds come together and little do they know how alive they will feel and become when they are together. But will they let the past rule their future and tear them apart? Or are they stronger as a unit and overcome their demons?
Jm Walker what can I say that hasn't been said before, you are amazing !!
I was so prepared for Matteo to take me one journey but he decided to take me on a different one. This story was intense, loving, healing, shattering & soul searching for both Matteo & Mae.
Isn't it funny how people can be in two completely different worlds but feel the same emotions, this story is one that will grip your heart and take you on a journey that only Matteo can explain.
Ever read a book feeling frustrated and yet forcing yourself to finish it? That's how I felt with This book. I kept on telling myself how bad can the book be since it has so Many 5 Stars ratings.
Seriously!!! She kneeling at Matteo's feet while meeting his father?
The 'we need to talk' appears too Many times in this book.
Cheesy words that gave me goosepimples.
Enough!! Just thank god that i'm done with this book.
31/2 stars. I am speechless and confused. I'm not even sure how to rate or review this book. With the sweet side of Matteo I swooned with the master side I cringed. I believe these two suffered to much screwed up things in their past and I don't even know what to say. Can't say I hate it and can't say I loved it. It is best to say I'm confused and my feelings are jumbled.
Matteo and Mae's story is a very intense one. It is extremely dark but touched my heart in so many ways. The things these two endured before meeting each other was unbelievable. The book is very well written and I loved it. The ending through me off and made me rethink things but even with that being said it was a great book.
I enjoy the dark and disturbing and this one fell right into place. Have I read darker and more disturbing, absolutely but I truly enjoyed every page of Beautiful Pain. The ending was also perfect!
