Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak (Russian: Самуил Маршак; 3 November 1887 – 4 June 1964) was a Russian and Soviet writer, translator and children's poet. Among his Russian translations are William Shakespeare's sonnets, poems by William Blake and Robert Burns, and Rudyard Kipling's stories. Maxim Gorky proclaimed Marshak to be "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature."

It is the absolutely first book that I owned. It is one of the books from the Foreign Language Publication houses of the erstwhile USSR.
Simple 2-line descriptions in translated verse, heartwarming illustrations. My mother re-translated from English to Bengali since this one we owned in English. I was 2 years old.

ছবির মান ভালো, যদিও রঙ ভালো হয়নি। কাব্যানুবাদ মোটেও জুতের হয়নি। ছোটদের পক্ষে ছন্দ মিলিয়ে পড়া কঠিন হবে। তারচে' খারাপ হচ্ছে লাইন এমনভাবে ভেঙে কোথাও কোথাও দুই কলাম করা হয়েছে যে, ছোটরা দূরে থাক, বড়রা পর্যন্ত বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে যাবেন।

তবু মারশাকের কয়েকটি লাইন মন ছুঁয়ে যায় -

"বাঁদর হলেও নিজের দেশ
পড়ে তো মনে, এটা তো জেল।"

"হারিয়ে দিতাম দূর সাগরে
সব জাহাজের পাল্লা ধরে।
এখন শুধু ধীরস্থির
রইল পুকুরের তীর।"
