First in the Enforcers and Coterie series, Magic Resistant delves deeper into a world where magic co-exists peacefully with the ordinary, for the most part...

Her existence is illegal.

Julia Hill joined the Mage Enforcers to save her own life. But if her colleagues find out she’s magic resistant, they’ll execute her without hesitation. It hasn’t been a major problem—it’s not like she’s going to spill her secret—until she meets Jackson. Or, more accurately, until he kidnaps her.

A demon summoning ends in murder.

Jackson Thorne is on the run, framed for summoning and losing control of a demon. His clues are sparse and allies are hard to find. Can he trust the woman he accidentally abducted or will she turn on him the moment she has the chance?

I enjoyed this first installment of the Enforcers and Coterie series. I loved the way Julia grew as a character throughout the course of the book. The "world" was fascinating, and I'm intrigued to see how the story will grow. We are left with a few unanswered mysteries—Markus, Sylvia, Dawn—but I will admit I'm most eager to read about Victor.

A couple negatives (and please note, PNR/UF is not my go-to genre so if you are a PNR/UF lover, take what I say with a grain of salt), too many characters, especially toward the end. I had trouble keeping track of them all. Also, I didn't feel the connection between Julia and Jackson. TBH, I would have liked to see a little more bad-ass-ness form Jackson. For being the MC, he fell a little to the sidelines for my liking.

All in all, a good introduction into a series that I have a feeling will just get better and better with each new installment. I'm looking forward to reading more.

The debut full-length novel from author Veronica Del Rosa, Magic Resistant is a highly immersive and well-thought-out PNR/UF hybrid. This book blends the sexiness of a Paranormal Romance with the detailed world building and the kick ass heroine of an Urban Fantasy.

Julia has a secret. Jackson is a fugitive. They find themselves thrown together after a botched mission to apprehend him, and a reluctant kidnapping turns into something more. Can he make Julia believe in his innocence? Can she entrust Jackson with a truth that would mean her certain death if it ever saw the light of day?

The first in the series, there was quite a bit of exposition, but that's sort of to be expected when introducing readers to a brand new world. And I was a little surprised at how quickly the relationship progressed from lust to love, but hell, it's a romance and I liked the MC's. Can't really complain there. ☺ And all the spells were pretty damn awesome. I imagine Ms. Del Rosa had to pretty much put together her very own grimoire to keep track of everything.

That attention to detail and some really good characterization allowed me to overlook the occasional interjection of a explanatory paragraph or two, and to focus on the story. Which is a darn good one, by the way.

Magic Resistant starts fast, and with an abrupt twist as the supposed villain rescues the heroine and they fight their way through faery. If you like Urban Fantasy with a side order of smexy romance, you will enjoy this book. For the most part, it keeps the promise of the opening chapters, but tends to get a bit bogged down in the middle as the relationship between Julia and Jackson develops. Kudos to the author for avoiding 'insta-love' but I did find myself skimming. The ending gets a bit convoluted, taking what appears to be a side-trip from the primary narrative, although it all comes together at the end. Mostly.

3.5 stars rounded to 4 because I'll read the next book. I really want to find out what's up with the enigmatic Markus.

A raid that would supposedly lead to the capture of the Mage Enforcer turned fugitive, Jackson, didn't turn out the way Julia had expected since she ended up being the one captured. Jackson is not, however, a fugitive.

Rather, he was framed and by whom he did not know. As he lets Julia in on what was going on with him, she starts to believe him and they start working together... but attraction had always been there since day one but love was following fast on its heels. Beyond the chaos going on around them, Julia still has a deep dark secret that would cost her life if anyone found out.

I feel that this is more urban fantasy than paranormal romance. I can't always tell which is which but I'm pretty sure in this case. I found that the romantic side of the story was pretty weak and the sex scenes weren't totally necessary.

However I very much enjoyed the mystery and the action scenes of the story. I'm giving two thumbs up for the world building and most especially bringing mages to life.

I loved that the author did not hold anything back; interconnecting different fantastical creatures such as the fae, werewolf, vampires, etc. with humans, both magic and non magic plus the use of modern technology.

Magic Resistant is the first installment of the Enforcers and Coterie series and it can be read as a standalone.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

This started out a little slow for me but after the kidnapping the pace picked up and the suspense was awesome. I've been spending the whole book trying to figure out whose side Markus is on. I'm still trying to figure it out after reading the end, which totally threw me for a loop. So not what I expected. I like keeper and would definitely want to know who Revanent is.

So this is added on after reading it a 2nd time. I’ve decided I like Markus more than anyone else.

You're in for a wild ride

This review is from: Magic Resistant (Enforcers and Coterie Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review by Lovers of Paranormal

Ms. Del Rosa has created a dark and complex world of mages, vampires, werewolves, demons, and humans. She starts the roller coaster ride off with a bang and the hills, twists, turns, and freefalls just keep on coming. The story centers around a mage, Julia who is resistant to magic. She's spent her entire life hiding this genetic flaw as it is a death sentence amongst her kind. Part of an Enforcement unit, she heads out with her partner to trap a rogue mage named Jackson. I don't want to give away any spoilers here. Suffice it to say Jackson isn't the bad guy everyone thinks. For Julia and Jackson it becomes a race to prove he was framed. Meanwhile, Julia must continue to hide her true self from the man she is falling in love with.
I liked this book and it looks to be the start of an interesting and exciting series. However, I often felt the author was trying to cram too much information onto the pages. At different points, it even became difficult to keep up with all the new characters continually being added. I found myself skimming over detailed descriptions of these new characters and their powers trying to get back to the main plot line dealing with Julia & Jackson.

I would give this book 3.5 stars. While the story had a good premise, I feel like there were a lot of different characters to keep straight. Fae, vampires, werewolves, mages and humans, oh my! I was a little confused by all of the interactions between them and who worked for or against who. Reading the novella Throwing Away the Good (Enforcers and Coterie, #0.5) by Veronica Del Rosa before this book would be a good idea. It gives the reader a little bit of back story to some of the characters that you'll meet in Magic Resistant. I like the idea behind the series, having a counsel of enforcers keeping the peace among the magical community. This book would be an fun read for fans of PNR.

I received this book as an ARC.

I could not put Magic Resistant down once I started reading it. It's not your typical paranormal novel and brings new ideas alive, making it different and more exciting than standard novels. The two main characters, Jackson and Julia are both intriguing and very different! Julia wasn't one to break the rules until Jackson came along and taught her that sometimes you have to break the rules to get the answers you need. I wanted to keep reading to find out what mystery was going to unravel next. Magic Resistant keeps you engrossed while looking forward to the next books in the series. I am dying to know what happens next!

Wow, a lot of action-packed fun in this one. I felt like I was playing a really involved RPG all over the streets of Toronto, complete with monsters, spell-casting, and nesting-doll bad guys! Oh, and a super-hot, affectionate sidekick didn't hurt, either. A little rough around the edges, the balance between detailed worlbuilding and outright infodumps tended to swing towards the latter a bit too often. And Julia is officially the worst bodyguard ever. But nonetheless it's a rich universe brimming with potential, and the next book will likely be even better, now that the gameboard has been properly set.

Loved the characters and the world building. I just wish we got some more of Dawn!!! I need to know what is going on with her story line. It's driving me crazy!

I also really want to know more about Markus. He is just one big mystery like Revenant. Hopefully we get more in a sequel.

I have no idea why this book has only good reviews on it. Even without seeing the cover this book SCREAMS self published. The author thrusts you into the story with almost no world building or chance to connect with the main characters, I got a hint of personality, but mostly it reminding me of my cringey, teenage Roleplaying writing. Where I would write out how my character looked for my RP partners benefit by forcing my character to do things no one normally does. Like counting the amount of earrings she has, as if that's new information to her? There were just so any things that bothered me about this book within just a few pages that I honestly didn't care to put any more effort into reading the rest. I was not willing to put myself through the already constant eye rolling or bewildered paragraph rereading.

One example of many was the story telling, or lack there of. Del Rosa didn't even bother to talk about the magic in this world at all. She just states that there is magic and has her characters talk about spells but not what they do or how they operate. Sure she has a tracer spell, but how does it DO? How does it lock on to a target? How is magic used? how long does it last? What does the main character feel or sense when using a spell or magic? I feel like these questions are ones that my high school creative writing teacher would have asked me on my first assignment. "Get into the characters head, make it feel real, build your world. Don't merely SAY whats happening, tell the story."

The biggest thing, and the reason I ended up returning this book was when our main character gets kidnapped the initial reaction to realizing that fact ISN'T IN THE BOOK. "Oh, it must have skipped a few days then? Or a travel sequence maybe?" NOPE our author just randomly decides to SKIP a 2-5 minute scene for no reason. Our main character goes from groggily thinking her kidnapper is her partner leading her to safety because of a sleep spell, (which, to the authors credit, was well done and believable: thinking his voice was hoarse from the smoke and yelling) to BAM shes sobbing because Marcus isn't with her and now shes being led around by a fugitive. WHAT?! When did she realize this? There was no dialog, no internally slowly waking up and realizing she wasn't with who she thought she was with. No sudden shock or even a struggle. Nothing. What in the actual hell? How is this good story telling in any way? This isn't even just lazy writing. This is more than that, this is just sad.

Please, anyone thinking of getting this book just look it up on amazon and read the free sample of the book first before you buy it. You'll get a good feel for the writing style. Which, in my opinion, shows bits of promise, but is ultimately a bit on the juvenile side and riddled with holes.

This book is set in a completely new paranormal environment where there is magic which rules a majority of the land and people who are resistant to magic are killed. There is also a whole ream of other supernatural creatures including demons, werewolves and anything else you could imagine. This book is centred around two main characters and tell their story of how they fell in love and overcame obstacles in their way to keep each other alive.

The main characters are Jackson and Julia; Jackson is a magic using person who has come under scrutiny from the ruling government when they thought he turned rogue after investigating a ring of demons. Whereas Julia is a magic resistant who hides her identity so as not to be killed; when she gets dragged into a dangerous situation with Jackson where she saves the day. Jackson feels that he has to keep her close to him so that he remains undiscovered by the people he is running from. In this story the two characters come together in a way that is unlikely and very exciting to read about the story shows that both characters can operate individually and as a team. It also breaks the usual stereotype that men have to save women and flips it on its head.

The secondary characters in this book help both characters reach a place where they need to be in order to succeed as a team. They also are the reason for many of the problems the couple faces on a regular basis in the book; I did not feel that any of the characters were noteworthy however, since they are not a constant throughout the book like the two main characters.

The pacing in the book was great bringing in different problems for the two main characters at exactly the right time allowing the reader sufficient time to understand exactly what is happening at certain times during the book.

The storyline is largely based on the action that is happening around the two main characters there are also strong themes of paranormal running through the book. I also like the little bit of romance that spans for the entirety of the book and that was especially important to our main characters story.

3.5 stars a really good read

**I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Lovers of Paranormal (LoP)**

***4.5 STARS***

Julia, a Mage Enforcer who works for the magical government, the Coterie alongside her powerful partner, Markus. However, Julia is special, she is Magic Resistant. This is a secret she must protect as Magic Resistant mages are hunted and killed for their abilities, she must hide this from everyone that she loves.

Julia and Markus are trying to capture the elusive, rogue Mage Enforcer, Jackson. He is a traitor to their race and a fugitive for heinous crimes, including demon summoning. Nearing Jackson's trail, Julia is knocked unconscious by Markus and awakens to discover that Jackson has kidnapped her. All is not as it seems and Julia must get to the bottom of this mystery, whilst battling her feelings for Jackson.

Del Rosa utilises excellent description throughout the novel. The reader can easily paint a picture of the scene and the characters. All the characters are well developed, with hidden layers, secrets and dark pasts. Julia and Jackson are instantly lovable and seeing their relationship blossom kept me gripped throughout.

The novel is fast paced, with continuous action. This engages the reader and I felt that I learnt something new with each turn of the page. I was riveted throughout and simply could not put it down.

The only reason I have not given it 5* is because there were times when the tenses/grammar didn't flow. Another good edit and this book would be polished to perfection. I am perhaps overly picky as I do proofread but it does make all the difference to the overall novel if the creases are ironed out, so to speak.

The book is a mixture of romance, paranormal mystery and in parts erotic fiction. Del Rosa interweaved all the elements to create an impressive debut novel. I believe she has a promising career ahead of her. I will be looking out for the next installment. Particularly after the cliff hanger epilogue…

I would highly recommend this book.

Jackson is a fugitive from justice, hunted by the Enforcers for a crime he says he didn’t commit. Julia is one of those Enforcers. When Jackson is forced to kidnap Julia to save her life, Julia sees the evidence that may prove his innocence. But helping him means not only risking her career and her life—and her heart as they start to grow closer—it also may mean exposing her darkest secret, the one she has hidden her entire life.

I really enjoyed this fun and rich UF book, particularly the first 30 pages or so (bad-ass mage fight with trolls in the Fae world=awesome!). I love the world building in this series, the different races and factions and how they are revealed and the whole concept of the Coterie and the Enforcers. The story did lose something for me about mid-way through, tho. I got a little confused on plot and motivation. And some characters I didn’t understand at first(Gavin!) For those reasons my rating is a 3.5, rounded up to 4.

Loved seeing Karl again-From the first book(a novella), Throwing Away the Good (Enforcers and Coterie, #0.5) by Veronica Del Rosa which I highly recommend reading before this, even though this book is stand alone, simply because it will increase your enjoyment of this story.

I was intrigued by the introduction of the werewolves, and can’t wait for the story featuring them. Good story and will def be continuing with this series!

Veronica Del Rosa really shows off her writing skills in her new novel Magic Resistant. She gives us a complex culture where Humans, Werewolves, Vampires, and Mages (not to mention the occasional demon) must learn to intermingle and get along with each other. They do it through a strong central government and the almost Gestapo-like actions of a group called The Enforcers. Seen from the inside it’s a necessary evil to assure peace and union. But then we learn that Del Rosa’s complex and enticing Heroine, Julia, a fairly new member of the enforcers, has a tragic flaw. She’s Magic Resistant, a trait punishable by beheading. Julia knows... she’s witnessed it.

Julia fears her partner Markus, one of the most senior enforcers, will actually carry out the sentence if he ever finds out. But in the mean time she’s captured by an amazing outlaw mage named Jackson, and while in captivity, in an absolutely sizzling unraveling of self-control, Julia and Jackson become attracted to each other and eventually become lovers.

The werewolves are the bad guys here, and when Julia and Jackson finally team up with Markus, we’re drawn into the inner circles of the government where the real villains are unmasked. Sexy, inventive stuff, with lots of well described locales, monstrous adversaries, and building tension right up until the end when Julia’s Magic Resistance is finally discovered.

Veronica Del Rosa weaves together a world of magic and intrigue that took me for a ride that I will not soon forget.

Julia has spent her whole life keeping secrets and forcing herself to overcome her own inadequacies in magic. This has taught her both kindness toward other who are different, and given her an edge in her life as a Magic Enforcer, the people who keep the magically inclined in line with the law.

Jackson has spent his entire life as an Enforcer, fighting demons around every turn to keep the peace on Earth. Framed for a crime he didn't commit, he finds himself on the run and losing a year of his life to the people who want to see him dead.

When Jackson kidnaps Julia, things start to heat up--for both of them.

I enjoyed the world that Del Rosa has woven together, the characters are kick-ass, but believable. I like my PNR sassy and sexy and Veronica delivered both. This is not an emotional ride, if that is what you are looking for. This is an adventure that will keep you turning the page to find out the whodunit and the what-the-hell-is-going-on!

I recieved this for free for my honest review thru Lovers of Paranormal! I want to thank Veronica Del Rosa for letting me read&review her awesome book :) I really wish I would have read Throwing away the good 0.5 before I read this but all in all this was still a great read. I loved the world built for it, the characters & the plot every aspect of this book is paranormal with romance. From the Vampires, Werewolves, mages, fae & humans all combined in this book with lots of action& I loved it. Ok so Julia Hill has a job to do and a secret & not much time for romance. She is a Mage inforcer and can't let anyone get to close to her. She keeps peace in the magical community. Jackson Thorne is a fugitive even tho he swears he didn't do it that he is being set up. Julia falls deep under his spell she is still not sure if she can trust him. They start working together to figure it out, but the lust turns to love really fast and on top of that everything else going on around them. Will Julia & Jackson figuare it out before its too late? Go check this book out& find out you won't regret it!

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review LoP (Lovers of Paranormal). I enjoyed this book thoroughly. The author did a great job setting up believable world in which treaties governed the paranormal and peace seemingly held sway. I liked that the main characters meshed well together in rough situations and that they interacted with their friends as well. The romance progressed along with the plot and didn't detract from the issues at hand. I liked that both characters had a strong moral compass and were able to make a difference. I cant wait to read the next one!

'Magic Resistant' was very intriguing. I loved the way the storyline pulled me in and didn't let go. The way it played out was full of magic, mystery, romance and some hot and steamy parts. I loved the characters. Julia made a great lead. I liked her no nonsense attitude. She is quite bad-ass. Jackson was a great character also. I can't wait to read the next book. This book was good, but I think everything happened too quick. The characters jumped into bed too quickly, and says I love you way too soon. Also, Julia decides to trust Jackson too quick with barely any proof. The author tells us time has passed. I wish she would have showed us instead. I wanted to see a slow build up of their relationship. I wanted to see how Julia and Jackson came to fall in love and trust one another. Instead I was TOLD days had passed and they became used to each other. Overall this book was good. It kept me interested and wanting to finish. There were parts I didn't understand with other characters but by the end I knew was leading to other books.

A good start to a series. A fresh take in the world of paranormal. I like the characters but the romance seemed to gravitate to quickly to love, I would have liked to see that take a bit longer, perhaps holding the realization until the end. And the ending moved so quickly with so many things happening in the council. Some of these things should maybe have been foreshadowed. But I still think it's worth the read and it will be interesting to see how the series continues. Plenty of things left open to expand.

It took me a while to work through this book, and I think it's entirely because I just could not buy the relationship at the core of it. Any process of coming closer was buried in shifting forward several days, and that just ruined the connection for me.

There's an interesting world here, but I don't know if I'll come back to it.

This book is now available on amazon!

I had the privilege of getting an ARC of this book from the author. First let me say that I stepped a bit outside of my preferred genres with this book. I do not read a lot of urban fantasy and walked into the world building of this type of book fairly blind. Magic Resistant was a wonderful step into the genre. I was engaged from the beginning and was able to connect with the characters. The world building was slow and yet immersive. Once drawn into the world of the Coterie, it feels plausible which I'm assuming is the goal of all urban fantasy (and from some of the bad attempts I've made into the genre, author often fail to make their worlds real).

Magic Resistant is the story of a young Mage named Julia who is an enforcer for the Coterie which is the ruling government body of the magical community. It is their job to set rules and enforce the following of those rules. Julia is a strong willed and tough Mage with a secret. Her secret could be deadly if ever found out. As a Mage she has a few special talents that I was personally enchanted by. Julia has a father figure partner who maybe one of the most intriguing secondary characters I have ever read about. I am looking forward to a book about Marcus (hint to Veronica Del Rosa).

Jackson is a criminal on the run who just happens to end up accidentally kidnapping Julia. We should all be so fortunate as to be kidnapped by Jackson. I'm not sure if this was quoted in the book or if I decided it to be fact, but the man is absolutely lickable. The romance and adventure Jackson and Julia embark on is page turning exciting. Ms. Del Rosa proved to be a talented with writing love scenes. This book is not smut, Del Rosa makes you wait for it, but the wait is worth while. She knows how to build up to the steam and lead her readers right back into the plot. There is not sex for the sake of sex in this book.

Book one of this series did a great job of letting the reader learn of the politics and laws of the Coterie without being overwhelming. We were introduced to a number of characters which I hope will we will get to know better later. Magic Resistant even gave a glimpse into Fae which is enough of a teaser to make you beg for more. There are some serious delinquent Fae in this series! Considering my last look at that particular realm was in the Mists of Avalon, you can understand my desire to know more.

This book is one of my favorites so far this year. Veronica Del Rosa may be one of my newest favorite authors.

Dawn was the star of this book for me :)

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review

Magic Resistant begins with an insight into the life of Julie who has been assigned to Marcus, a respected and talented Mage / Enforcer. She has been Marcus’ sidekick (relegated to not much more than an observer) for what seems like forever, waiting for the day that she will be able to contribute to maintaining the law amongst the magic world. It takes a mission to go wrong for Julia to put her years of training into action. Luckily, she does well and fights for her life using the minimal weapons she has been left with. Proving all the time she spent training was time well spent. Life as an enforcer is not easy, especially for a trainee that has her own secrets. Finally close to the action, Julia gets to put her many years of training into action. It’s an unexpected opportunity but one she meets with skill and confidence.

Chance places Julia in the company of Jackson, a fugitive, who she ends up being drawn in to assist him right a wrong. To do so they must remain under the radar. Pooling their resources together, they set out on a mission to get to the bottom of why Jackson has been set up and at the same time manage to develop an appreciation for each others talents on and off the job!

A good story with a tendency to become overly descriptive in parts. This is always a sticky point when reading a PNF book due to the essential world building but the trick is to give just enough information to accept the setting and keep the story flowing.

The characters were good and likeable. It’s got everything from Vampires, Werewolves, Mages, Fae and well you get the idea, it’s the whole shebang of the PNF world working together to maintain balance and co-exist harmoniously alongside humans. The story focuses on the paranormal inhabitants in the world as we know it. The one who caught my attention was Dawn, the scenes where she featured were my favourite. A wise woman that had no fear in facing her challenges and a genuine friend to Julia.

Sylie’s story is next with a teaser chapter at the end of this book and it looks good. Looking forward to more in this series and I’m hoping that Dawn has a book planned soon.

**I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal)**

I did have a hard time to fully get into it, but once I did get past a few chapters I enjoyed it (I think my difficulty is mainly because I'm enjoying sci-fi right now and giving UF and paranormal a rest). The world was very easy to understand and the author did well with telling and showing the reader what kind of world Magic Resistant is. I liked how she wrote how magic works and how magical and non-magical people live together. I really like the use of technology is the magical world~ it's sometimes disregarded it other UF books.

About Julia

Overall, it looks like it will be a good series and I'll mostly likely read it because of the ending.

3.5 Stars for Magic Resistant

While I'm not a die-hard fan of paranormal romance, I do dabble in reading it every once in a while. Interestingly enough, I was having a difficult time getting into the beginning of this story while reading it on my iPad, but the minute I started listening to the voice to text on my drive to and from work, the story totally clicked in my brain.

Ms. Del Rosa does a really great job of describing her paranormal world which exists on Earth. The story takes place in Toronto and is filled with twists and turns. I quickly picked up on the Enforcer and Coterie. The H / h characters were well developed and I was very interested in finding out where the story would lead in the end.

So why not a higher rating? While I enjoyed reading this story, I don't envision reading it again in the future and it didn't draw strong emotions from me (laugh out loud, tears, etc.). I giggled a few times, but I wasn't deeply emotionally vested - which is what I require for 4 or 5 ratings. However, I did get my money's worth and it was well worth my time to read it. I'm interested in reading Sylvia's and Dawn's stories. Both were very lovely characters in this book.

I absolutely loved this book! From the very beginning Veronica draws the reader into a world of magic and mystery. She is an excellent writer with a very pleasant writing style. This book has a natural flow on it that keeps you at the edge of the seat. The pace is spot on keeping the reader drawn into the story. This is a great mix of all paranormal. I can't turn away books containing magic, but when it also contains other paranormals, I just love it. The story is very riveting and truly a gem.

You can't help but just fall in love with both Julia and Jackson. They are a well matched pair that works well together. Both are very level headed and just plain adorable. Many others like Markus, Keeper, Sylvia and the Coterie are introduced to the reader, little did I know that this was actually the start to a great series.

I am not sure why I was so slow on this, but you can't imagine my delight when I found out this was a series. I will read each and every single one of them and can't wait to get started on the next one. This is a fantastic series and I am beyond happy to have found it.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)
