This collection of letters from nurses who served in many different theatres during World War Two is a fascinating insight into their dedication and sense of duty. Many faced immense danger, and frequently endured hardships that are vividly told in these first hand accounts.
I have come across some of the original letters in the National Archives and it is interesting to compare those with these version which were published under conditions of wartime censorship. In particular, all the names have been removed which means the contributors are anonymous. I hope to lift that veil of anonymity for those involved in the evacuations from France in my next book and some articles around it. They deserve acknowledgement.
