1.kniha zahrnuje romány Vystěhovalci a Přistěhovalci z tetralogie o osudech švédských emigrantů v polovině 19. století V popředí bohaté galerie postav s postaviček tohoto díla stojí silný a sebejistý Karl Oskar Nilsson, který od svých šestnácti let nikdy nepochyboval, že jen on sám může a musí rozhodovat o svém osudu i o osudu své rodiny, a jeho krásná žena Kristina. U všech vystěhovalců jde především o vzpouru proti útisku, bídě a beznaději. Je to příběh těch, kdo plni života opouštějí zemi svých předků a jistot, aby v novém, vzdáleném a neznámém prostředí uskutečnili své představy o svobodném a spravedlivém životě. Autor klade důraz na lidské hodnoty, které dělají život snesitelnější. Různorodé osudy prostých , obyčejných lidí a jejich zápas se životem jak ve staré vlasti, tak cestou do Ameriky i budování nové existence jsou vsazeny do toku vyprávění, kterému nechybí napínavost a dramatičnost, tragedie i štěstí a které je prodchnuto člověčinou.

Celá tetralogie vycházela postupně v letech 1949 - 1959.

About the author

Vilhelm Moberg was a Swedish journalist, author, playwright, historian, and debater best known for his Emigrant series of novels about Swedish emigrants to America. He also wrote other novels and plays and also participated in public debates about the Swedish monarchy, bureaucracy, and corruption. Among other works are Raskens (1927) and Ride This Night (1941), a historical novel of a 17th-century rebellion in Småland acknowledged for its subliminal but widely recognised criticism against the Hitler regime.

A noted public intellectual and debater in Sweden, he was noted for very vocal criticism of the Swedish monarchy (most notably after the Haijby affair), likening it with a servile government by divine mandate, and publicly supporting its replacement with a Swiss-style confederal republic. He spoke out aggressively against the policies of Nazi Germany, the Greek military junta, and the Soviet Union, and his works were among those destroyed in Nazi book burnings. In 1971, he scolded Prime Minister Olof Palme for refusing to offer the Nobel Prize in Literature to its recipient Alexander Solzhenitsyn – who was refused permission to attend the ceremony in Stockholm – through the Swedish embassy in Moscow.

Hade förutfattade meningar om att dessa böcker bara skulle vara skriven på gammaldags svenska, vilket inte var fallet. Fantastiskt vacker svenska och karaktärsutvecklingar, rekommenderar verkligen!

Boken är en glimt av svensk historia. Många människor har kämpat som dessa människor för att överleva i ett land med begränsade möjligheter. Den förändring Sverige har gått denom på hundra år, är iögonfallande.

Moberg kommunicerar en livlig, historiskt baserad bild av spänningarna i jordbruks och bylivet i Sverige på 1850-talet samt ger en insiktsfull titt på känslor, tankar och motivationer för en rad karaktärer som hamnar på ett fartyg, på väg för Nordamerika. Moberg introducerar oss för människor, män och kvinnor, gamla och unga, litterära och analfabeter och får oss att känna deras okunnighet, desperation och längtan.

Fina karaktärsskildringar, särskilt i Invandrarna där karaktärerna utvecklas och kommer en närmare. Något jag förvånat reagerar över är fokuset på männens sexualitet, uttryckt i ”snuskiga historier” som berättas av karaktärer och de ideliga kommentarerna om utspridd kåthet. Känns, i kontrast till berättelsen i övrigt, platt och schablonartat, och är inte riktigt kopplat till hur detta påverkar relationerna. Vad hade Moberg för syfte med detta?

Ingenting jag skulle vilja läsa om men den ger en intressant inblick i livet på 1800-talet och gillade det feministiska perspektiv som kommer fram. En värd historielektion.

Onödigt långt

It is in the middle of the 19th century and Sweden is poor. The hunger and poverty were wide-spread in the countryside. The emigrants from Småland - Karl Oskar and Kristina, the young and curious Robert, the mistreated Arvid, the prostitute Ulrika and the religious Daniel, embark on the ship to Amerika. We follow these people before the trip and on the the ship. They have little information on which to base their decisions. It struck me what little the knew about America. It´s not an easy choice to leave everything behind and move to America which they didn´t knew a lot about.

It is a truly great story about love and despair.
