The males of the planet Draconis lose the planet that supplies their mates to a natural disaster. The females survive, but they have left and spread to the far reaches of the universe. Their eyes turn to Earth. Jarel is sent with five other males to find mates and test the compatibility of Earth females. Their results will determine if their Empire looks to Earth or elsewhere. Davy is trouble or at least she has trouble following her. It's not her fault, it's all because of her ex-boyfriend who is a criminal and has sent killers after her. She meets Jarel who offers to protect her but she's a little suspicious where men are concerned. Should she trust him, or should she rely only on herself?
I was SO looking forward to this book. Dragon-alien shifters coming to Earth to find women willing to help them procreate? Yes. Yes so much.
However, this novella was written like a technical manual, and it was so grating. It literally read like this: "She wanted a drink. She stood up. She walked over to the bar. She poured herself a drink. She tasted the drink. She liked the drink. She walked back to her seat." (This is not an actual example, but I can pull from any paragraph in the novella and it will read like this.) I don't think there was a single compound sentence in the whole thing (okay, slight exaggeration, but not much).
There were also so many spelling and grammatical errors, it was almost enough for me to erase it from my Kindle library. There is no excuse for that in any book, let alone a short, easily fixed, digital copy.
The insta-love, the non-realistic threat from the mob, the annoying "explanations" of how different everything was on Earth (show, don't tell people), even the very confusing POV switches in the first part of the novella, it was all too much. And then there was the ending. Mary Sue much?
Free/cheap novellas that serve as an intro to a series should be as good, if not better than the rest of the series, because it is supposed to ENCOURAGE readers to buy the rest of the books. All this did was turn me off to the series AND the author. This, of course, makes me really sad because the actual CONCEPT of the series is so great, I have a million ideas of how to *actually* write it. I wish the idea was in a better author's hands.
This is a wonderful, entertaining book and I really enjoyed reading it. This book is about: a unforeseen natural disaster that occurred on another planet, causing the male draconis to turn their eyes towards earth in order to find mates. One of these males (Jarel) meets a female (Davinia aka Davy) in trouble and offers to help her, and from here the fun & games begin. What you will find in this book is: alien dragon shifters, a feisty human female, a vindictive ex-boyfriend, mob/mafia, drama, intrigue, suspense, adventure, action, mystery, attractions, mates, threats, protection, bonding, law enforcement, verbal banter, passion, love and a few steamy scenes. The story-line and plot is well thought out and written, it keeps the reader’s attention. The characters are well developed with personalities and moods suited to the situations they find themselves in. I would recommend this book
She's running for her life from a dangerous ex and he's looking for a mate, a woman to call his own for his dragon and his human side. Can these two be together and overcome the obstacles they may face. Absolutely loved this book and would thoroughly recommend it hoping that others enjoy it as much as I did.
This story has a lot going for it, than some I have read but still its about love and duty, its a must for dragon lovers. I would like to say that may good fortune smile on you always
I don’t like to give spoilers on the books that I read. I believe the blurb on the back is enough for you to decide if you will read the book or not. If you choose to read, enjoy!
Sergeant at Arms by Crystal Dawn is the first book in Winged Beasts series. Jarel comes to Earth from his home planet to find his mate. Davy is on the run from Joe, a major mob boss son that can't stand that she was going to break up with him.
This book is a prelude to a new series by Crystal Dawn. There are no new books in this series yet, but Author has few promising-looking series on her account already. Considering their Goodreads rating, they might be quite good too.
Story’s called “Sergeant at arms” and it’s about a woman in trouble and a dragon in need. It’s a romance, a genre I’m not that comfortable with, but it has fantasy and science fiction elements, and these are well placed in my comfort zone.
Everything starts on a different planet, inhabited by dragon shifters. It would be all wonderful for them if not the fact they’re all males. The only way for them to get children is to find females on another planets and bond with them. Real problems start when the planet, from which all the women came till now, it destroyed by a natural disaster. Now they have to start looking for new planet, new source of women, who will be willing to join them. It seems the next closest planet, with a potential to help them, is Earth.
For now story seems to have a potential right? It seems at that time to meet our heroine. A woman on the run. She needs to escape from her not-so-good ex, who will rather kill her, then let her go. Davy decides to change her appearance, get some money and start a new life.
On the other side we’ve got Jarel – a hot alien, who can change into a dragon. He came to Earth as a part of team intended to find possible women. If their mission works, Earth might become their constant dating ground.
Their first meeting happens during dinner. Accidental looks across tables, first contact, promise of next meeting…
That’s the moment when I should really stop telling you about the story. Did I mentioned I’m not much into romance? Well, this one wasn’t bad ;). I actually did enjoy reading it. What bothered me was the speed of their relationship rocketing toward bed. I know, love at first sight, etc, but there was something missing here. Then again it was just a short story, a prelude to something bigger. For now there’s no continuation, but I do hope there will be, because it might be really interesting. After all it has dragon shifters! Have you ever dreamt of changing into a dragon? I know I have. Especially after reading Witcher books and finding my second favorite character – Villentretenmerth (I did have to google the name…).
Ok… Story was interesting enough to give it a 3 star rating. If you’re into sf/fantasy romances this one might just hit your spot. I’m actually quite curious what might happen next.
Have fun reading the book and leave a comment to tell me whether you liked it.
Quiz time! You're a were-dragon on a planet of were-dragons. For lord knows what reason, every child born to your race is born male. So to get females, you take your spaceship over to the next planet over and trade gold for women. That planet knows you and likes your gold, so they're fine trading women to be your mates. One day an asteroid hits the Planet of Women and all the women have to flee the planet.
1) How, if you have space travel not just to this planet but to anywhere in the universe, did you miss that this asteroid was headed to the Planet of Women?
2) When the women all decide to flee their dying planet, why did you not invite them all to yours? Or at least track them where they went to? Noooo, you let them scatter to the winds and thus your race is dying unless you find Earth women to mate with.
3) How the hell, when nothing but males are born, did your species survive until you developed space flight?
4) Why is this book called Sergeant at Arms when there is no military or ranks involved?
I know it will come as no surprise, but the writing was just so so bad. The main character's name was Davinia. The story took place on Earth in Dracon City. In a book about dragons...
"Those guys were so hot that Davy thought she might need a fan placed where it would blow on her."
While playing the slots, she won: "It had just hit its jackpot of a hundred thousand plus dollars!"
"Her waitress came and distracted her and she ordered a sex on the beach which had all the men staring her way and a mixed appetizer platter."
The book was free, and still not worth the price. I gave up at the 50% point, which was a lot further than I should have read.
Just finished this book, it is a short read (57 pages), but the concept is so interesting. I am hoping for a long series from this book. If you enjoy reading about dragons and alien romance, then this is a book you should read. Basically, alien men dragon shifters are from a planet without their own females which is why they come to Earth to find mates. A mate and lots of surprise are found in Las Vegas of all places. The author made a great choice with Las Vegas as the alien's city of entrance. So much could happen in and because of Las Vegas. Giving away the story is no fun, so I only am giving the bare bones basics. It was a dual POV, which started out making the story strong. We didn't get much from Jarel after the beginning which had me trying to guess when I would get to read his POV again, well I didn't get to so I was kinda of upset. The romance was written really hot and steamy in the first scene then got a little flat in the next few. At the end it seemed like the author was in a hurry to wrap up the story. An epilogue was given, that really could have been another book....which if I was the editor I would have suggested! I am glad this is just and introduction book and can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I didn't see any glaring errors. Yes, I am volunteering to edit this series!! However, this book would have been longer if the story was developed a little bit longer. An editor that would make some suggestions in places
Title: Sergeant at Arms Series: Winged Beasts Destination: Prequel Book 0., 57 Pages. Author: Crystal Dawn Reviewer: Ingrid Stephanie Jordan Genre: #SciFi #Aliens #DragonShifters My Score: #5Stars☆☆☆☆☆ ♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡•°•♡ Wowzer this is just another extraordinary book from Ms. Crystal. And it's only the prequel remarkable. Can't even imagine what book 1 will be like, they only let you give 5 Stars ludicrous. I most certainly recommend this book, can you call 57 pages a book well needless to say it's a MUST READ. Davinia never ever liked her name consequently she always went by Davy. She was on the run, NO there was no way she was running. She could change her identity and dye her hair plus wear different clothing. Maybe glasses too. Whatever she was going back, Joe blew up her car, gosh she felt bad poor saleman that picked up the car didn't know what hit him. She was going to make sure Joe was brought to justice if she lived that long. As she's trying to figure out her next step this gorgeous hunk of man catches her eye. Hmmmmmmmm she catches his too. Jarel is a Alien Dragon Shifter from the Planet Draconis there race has a big problem every birth for centuries are male, that's right all boys. Jarel and five other males were sent to Earth for mates. If they succeeded more would come. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Today we will find out mate. I hope so excited going to the earth. The first protector have built a organization from which they are able to bring in single women to match with an fine the one. Without the human female the planet Draconian would be lost no females have been born just males so they have reached out to the galaxies an have found earth females compatible with them. Davy is running from a ex who is part of the mob in Las Vegas. While she's trying to save her life she has fallen heads over heels for someone she doesn't want to get hurt because of her. Once Jarel sees the lovely lady sitting next to him he has to touch her wants to keep her. She said show me. She's beautiful golden scales an she's mine. Looking forward to seeing the sparks fly when her cousin starts looking for her at the casino where she w a s last seen.
What a great short story! And it's my first read of an alien dragon shifters!!! I have read a couple of aliens looking for mates books and I am really so in awe of all the creativity! And this book presented an even more imaginative point of view!!! This writer did not deny us PNR lovers any hot and steamy scenes either! In fact I was quite pleased this short story focused on the storyline and tastefully placed the erotic scenes appropriately and did not overdue it. Thank you for an awesome read!
I love dragons. I love aliens and I love stories where aliens have to find mates among female humans.
What I didn't like was how "robotic" it felt. It was literally :"He said, he did, then she did and after that she said. " The story didn't flow and it bothered me. It bothered me so much that I can't find it in my heart to rate it any higher.
I was not fond of the characters either ( if I am not the chance for I am gonna like the book is very little) .
I genuinely like the idea of the storyline, but it was poorly executed.
Wonderfully enjoyable story In this wonderfully well written story you have a love story, alien Dragon men, human mob after a human female that just may find a place to hide that the mob can’t reach her. This is the love story of Jarel and Davy and how they met and came to be. It’s also about how Davy with the help of the Draconist men takes down her Ex-boyfriend who is also part of the mob. Lots of twists in this very enjoyable self-contained story.
Loved the start to the Winged Beasts Series. The planet Draconis only produces male dragon shifters. So off to Earth they go. This is a great blend of Sci-fi and shifter romance. I found myself unable to put it down. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Since this book was listed as book 0, a prequel to the series, I was surprised to realize it is a complete full length story. The characters were easy to relate to. It includes some action and suspense along with the romance. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Crystal Dawn has a way of sucking you into her stories. You can visualize everything like a movie. This is a passionate and beautiful love story where the good guys win and the bad guys pay for their sins. This is another hit. It can be read as a stand-alone story but their are other books in the series. There is no cliffhanger.
If you love to read about dragons that are aliens, this is the book to get. The characters were great and on a mission to find their mates. This is a must buy book, where you find love through time and space?
This was a cute little rain. However I felt it was a little rushed. The characters were likable but you never really get to know them. Does show promise for a new series however.
Wonderful story. I enjoyed that Davinia is a strong willed woman that is secure in herself but also able to change her plans when her true mate finds her. She is also strong enough to accept help when it is offered. I will be getting the rest of the series.
