After reading the photographic essay on Cesar Chavez a few weeks ago, I was eager to learn more about him. This awesome resource from the 2009 America's Honor list helped feed my quest for knowledge! The book is split into 10 chapters which range from his early years through the grape strike and into his final years. Each chapter includes pictures, side bar facts, and other nonfiction resources. The back of the book contains wonderful resources including a timeline of his life as it compares to world events, additional suggested resources (books and websites), a glossary, and index. This book reminds me of a social studies textbook, but it is so much more interesting! This is a wonderful nonfiction resource for use in grades 4-8. It would pair well with other resources on Cesar Chavez OR during a biography unit. Bringing in nonfiction texts with the Common Core seems to scare many teachers. However, this is how biographies should be written. It is engaging and informative. Teachers will love this resource!
