Ameritopia

Rate this book
War and crime are relics of the past. Violence and non-tolerance have been bred out of the population. How? As a result of too much god-play, men have all but wiped themselves off the face of the planet. Women have inherited the Earth. But the species must carry on… Daily monotony and curiosity about historic tales of romance overwhelm inexperienced and mannerly researcher Evelyn Knight. Consequently, she risks the comfortable life she’s always known and ventures into one of the last strongholds of men, tucked into the foothills of Colorado: The Rock. Inside, Eve is pushed to the breaking point when confronted with everything she has been missing on the outside: aggression, betrayal, duplicity, and could it be… love? Not the kind of love portrayed in the Austen novels she grew up with… something more raw and incalculable. Ameritopia defies gender roles and the status quo in a way that just might help you rediscover life (and love) with new hope.

Ameritopia flips the script on feminism and gender roles. It's an interesting concept that boils down to one thing, HUMAN rights. It's thought provoking and unusual. You can see things from both sides, a perspective some never try to understand. Love is messy, being human is hard, and emotions are complicated. Ritter keeps her characters simple and the plot is easy to follow, with a high action ending. The story line runs smoothly, and the characters are relatable. I would recommend this book to a friend who is looking for something out of the ordinary. I look forward to the sequel.

It's hard for me to put a finger on why I didn't like this book. Maybe because it seemed preachy and up it's own ass with messages. Maybe because the main character was annoying and this book only reinforced why I dislike members of my own gender. Maybe it's because the author thinks she's clever, when in reality she is obvious and un-original. Maybe because I can't figure out who the audience for this book is ... it's not children, it's not men, it's not even women, that I can tell. I certainly couldn't recommend this book to anyone. And lastly, never mention someone's awesome book in your crappy one. Just sayin'.

I thought the plot would be interesting and it was unique. A fun read until the last few chapters when it took an uncharacteristic (in my mind anyway) jump off into insanity. No spoiler here. I did not appreciate the metamorphosis and started skipping over paragraphs to the end so I could feel I finished it. This kind of turnaround does not appeal to me but it will intrigue others.
