This is the kind of book that reminds me why I love diving into fantasy. It’s fun, exciting, and packed with depth and detail that made me feel instantly connected and immersed in the story from start to finish. The writing is strong and beautifully descriptive.

I received a review copy of this story, and this is my honest opinion.

This was a brilliant read and so beautifully written. Usually when I read fantasy, I find myself thinking, “this is similar to another book or movie,” I can often recognise the patterns or predict where things are going. But this book felt genuinely different and completely sucked me in.

One of the things I really appreciated was the characters and their individual stories. I particularly loved the FMC’s history and the way her loss and pain were handled. I don’t want to say too much because I absolutely don’t want to spoil it, but it felt different from the usual fantasy character backstories and gave her a depth that I really connected with. There was so much empathy and understanding throughout the story, I found myself becoming emotionally attached to some of the characters.

The romance was also so well done. It is definitely a slow burn, but it’s the kind of slow burn that actually works. Rather than having you screaming, “Just admit your feelings”, their relationship develops naturally as they slowly learn to understand each other. I loved watching that trust and understanding build throughout the book, and it made their relationship feel much more believable and rewarding.

I also really enjoyed the fantasy world itself. The creatures felt much more unique than the ones I usually come across in fantasy books, rather than immediately being the same familiar creatures we’ve seen a hundred times before. There were also SO many little Easter eggs throughout the story that kept me questioning things and wondering what they might mean. Some of the twists genuinely caught me off guard, which I absolutely loved.

There is so much happening throughout the book, and I’m honestly impressed by how much the author managed to fit in without it ever feeling like there was too much going on or, alternatively, that something was missing. The story kept me invested from start to finish, and I was constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next.

The writing itself was another huge positive for me. It was descriptive, emotional, easy to get lost in, and the dialogue worked really well. It managed to make me laugh and where I felt genuinely connected to the characters and what they were going through.

There are definitely scenes and moments that will stick with me, but I’m keeping those to myself because discovering them for yourself is half the fun!

I would absolutely recommend this to other fantasy readers, and honestly, even if you don’t normally read romantasy, I’d still give this one a go. The romance is there, but this book is SO much more than that. The world, characters, mysteries, twists and overall story give it so much more depth, and I’m already desperate to find out what happens next.

I cannot wait to read book two! ❤️

Where to begin? I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was a little slow off the start but once the story line picked up it was an engrossing read. The FMC and MMC were definitely to my liking. There was a deep-rooted slow burn happening between them and it was delicious. I expected a little more spice in this book, but the promise of the next book being Spicer, I can only imagine with the hint dropped in this book, it’s going to be an epic love story. I did not see all the twists and turns of this story coming, so I was VERY pleasantly surprised by that. I feel this book is very well written. I have not read any other books by this author and am very excited to jump into more of her books.
The FMC, Haven is well developed with this book and does give a rather tragic back story. She overcomes more obstacles in this book than I ever thought a heroin would. First the death of her people, her son, and her freedom, just to be at the whims of an evil spiteful king. She must overcome the afterlife to get back to her father, her people to save them from the fate of this dreadful King. Haven travels through the rings of the afterlife fighting her way thru lost souls, vengeful souls and souls that just can’t let go, with her guide Col. Col has the honor of taking her soul to meet Mortriel the god of death to plead her case for her soul to be reunited with her body that is clinging to life.
The MMC, Col, is a High Reaper, High Reaper number 13 in fact. He is a cold soul. He does his job and he does it very well. He is tasked to bring Haven’s soul to Hollow Helm so that she can plead her case to Mortriel. His boss. Only the way parts of Col start to soften, he gets to know Haven, he starts to have feelings for Haven. All things Col is not familiar with. 500 years of solitude and reaping have left him an empty shell of the Dragon he once as. Then this Ayed woman comes along. She shakes things up, doesn’t take no for an answer and is as head strong as they come. While they journey past the three rings that circle Hollow Helm the death city, there is Sybas the land of tormented souls, Bloodlust, the land of lost souls and then getting stuck in “The Deep” for a little while. Next is the sea of Devotion, finally getting to Hollow helm, lots of moving parts at this point in the story.
I won’t go on to ruin this book for you all but it’s an amazing read! Give it a try, you won’t regret it!

Rating: ★★★.5

3 Sentence Summary:

After an unfortunate turn of events, Haven finds her soul split from her body. She must embark on a quest through the underworld to ask the God of Death to reunite her with her dormant body. With the help of a dragon-shifting soul-reaper, Col, Haven must figure out how far she's willing to go to find the strength she needs to save her people.

Overall Thoughts:

I received an ARC from the author, in exchange for an honest review.

I was hooked from page 1. The first few paragraphs were intriguing, the world was already building in my head, and we were off to a great start. The worldbuilding was fairly strong, and definitely creative. The magic system was nothing like anything I've seen before, which was refreshing and I really enjoyed the concept. Both Col and Haven were interesting as separate characters, and I was interested to know more.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, it was pitched as a slow burn, enemies to lovers, dark fantasy. Unfortunately, it fell a little short for me in some of those aspects. It is slow burn, in the sense that there isn't much romance in book 1, however the characters were never real enemies, and the transition from 'enemies' to the relationship dynamic they had reached by the end of book 1 was a fairly quick one. It was almost as if the romance came out of nowhere, for me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and will read the second part of this duology upon its release. Many thanks to the author for the advanced copy.

The first thing which comes to mind after reading The Dragon Reaper is: I was not expecting THAT!
When I started the book I was very soon convinced I knew what kind of story it was going to be...only to be completely caught of guard by the next development. The book just kept surprising me to the very end and now I can´t wait for the second part.

I also appreciate the depth of the world created here. A world with many magical races with different cultures and also their own mythologies (which plays a big part in the story). The (magical) creatures here are often completely new and you can let your imagination run wild when trying to picture them.

Parts of the book are adventure, action, schemes and hidden danger. But there are moments of peace and moments of sadness too. A few scenes really resonated with me and even made me cry. The romance here is described by the author as slow burn. Yes the main characters do not fall in love at first sight. They first start to respect each other. They learn to trust and understand each other. The development of their relationship is very natural and when I take into consideration the time frame of the book - the romance is actually not slow at all.

So to sum it up: if you are a romantasy reader, if you like to explore new worlds and mythologies, if you like adventure and action, strong female character and a mysterious male character and of course romance.....then stop here and read The Dragon Reaper by Leah Nightcrest.

I really enjoyed The Dragon Reaper. The world-building was probably one of my favourite parts, and I loved slowly discovering more about this world, its gods, dragons and the different people within it.
I especially loved the slow bond forming between Haven and Col, the Dragon Reaper. Col is an Ever Soul who hasn't formed this kind of connection in 500 years and never believed he would again, so watching Haven gradually become important to him made their relationship even better. Their bond wasn't rushed, and I really enjoyed watching it develop throughout the story.
Haven herself was such a strong character. She would do absolutely anything for her people, the Ayed, even after being manipulated by a king who asked her to become his wife while hiding his true intentions towards her people. Her loyalty to them never wavered.
I also loved how completely unafraid she could be. Even when faced with the literal God of Death refusing to allow her soul to return to her body, Haven still had no problem telling him exactly what she thought of him
Then there is the warning from the God of Time that Haven is destined to burn the world, which added another whole layer to her story and left me wondering exactly what is coming for her and Col.
And of course, it ends on a cliffhanger. There are so many unanswered questions and I absolutely need to know what happens next!

I received The Dragon Reaper as an ARC and am providing my honest review. When I provide a Three star rating I am not saying that the story is not good... more like average (think like getting a C on a test in school).

For a slow-burn romantasy story, the story line itself moved very quickly. I loved the basis for the plot, I just wish that there was more development within the story as it felt like I was dropped into the middle of events with no explanation as to what had happened or why, and then events just kept happening at every turn that made it hard to keep up with who was doing what, where, and why. The story has so much potential, I just feel that it could have been drawn out more to provide a more cohesive sequence of events.

I will say that I loved the idea of a Dragon Shifter as a reaper of souls, this was so different than so many of the other dragon based romantasies, it was very refreshing and enjoyable. I look forward to book 2 and seeing where the story will end. If you are looking for an easy, fast paced read with unique characters, this is a great book for you.

This book had such a fun world to be in. It kept me turning page after page just to be immersed more. There are very vivid descriptions and small details that make it feel real and easy to imagine.

Also loved the banter and was very engaged in the romance part of it. The dynamic felt refreshing because of the female lead. I really loved her because yes she shows emotions and despair, but also strength.

The romance didn't feel as slow burn as expected, but it developed over enough pages/chapters that it wasn't insta and that's a huge win in my opinion.

I loved almost all of the side characters so much! Especially (it's gonna sound vague because I will not spoil) a certain God, a certain witch, River Elf, and a certain Woodland fae.

I recommend this book to everyone who loves immersive fantasy worlds, a female character that's strong, but also shows her emotions, and a fun, bantering, budding romance.

First things first thank you to Leah Nightcrest for allowing me to get my hands on an early copy.

I completely devoured this book in one sitting. With the length of this book I didn’t think it would be so descriptive and full of detail but I was proved so wrong. The world building and magic systems was unlike anything I’ve read in a long time. The pacing of the story is just perfect, everything flows so naturally. Now can we talk about the Dragon Reaper himself? Cause whew! I know he’s mentioned in a few other books by Leah so i’ll be buried deep in those by the time i’m done writing this. And obviously Haven she’s star of this whole show. She’s such a lovable strong FMC. The type that’s ready to sacrifice herself to save her people. This book is full of tension, high stakes, secrets, and forbidden attraction. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I really enjoyed The Reaper by Leah Nightcrest. It was a fast, engaging read and one of the better quick reads I’ve picked up in a while.

I would have liked a little more world-building at the beginning, particularly more explanation of the three kingdoms and the different civilizations within them. I think that additional context would have made it easier to become fully immersed in the story from the start.

I enjoyed the romance and the slow-burn elements, although I felt the Reaper and the main character ultimately fell in love a little too quickly. I also really enjoyed the world the heroine finds herself in and would have loved to see even more development of it.

Overall, this was an enjoyable, easy-to-get-through fantasy romance that kept me interested. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the story goes in the next book.

I received an advanced copy of this book.
Overall 3 star for me.

The story follows cole & haven through the afterlife as she is trying to go back to save her people. I thought the storyline and creativity of the book was quite compelling. There are also a few things about them such as their background as individual characters and their reactions to the rings that felt interesting. However, I felt that execution lacked. It was hard to follow at times since it is too fast paced, as if the plot was always pushing them around. Also the romance felt undeveloped going from full on hateful comments to warmth.
While I am sorry i didn't like this book more i still really appreciate the ACR copy from the author.
Thank you so much.

Thank you Leah Nightcrest for trusting me with this epic read. I was swept off my feet from the beginning and needed to know more about our girl Haven and her Dragon Reaper - Col. A fast paced easy read, I found myself delving deep into the characters pasts and loving how their relationship was unfolding, whether they wanted it to or not. A story of gods, dragons, kings, fae, beasts and of course the threat of war, each chapter keeps you holding your breath as to what will happened next. The ending had me screaming 'Where is Book 2 !' and I'm sure you will to. A staggering amount packed into this amazing read.

Review of advance copy received from Author
I really enjoyed this book. It was dark, emotional and much more original than I expected, especially in the way it imagined the afterlife and the world of Hollow Helm.
The story gets very dark in places, but there is also a surprising amount of emotion, tenderness and even humor throughout the story. And that ending! I suspected a couple of things along the way, but I was not prepared for where the story went. That was a terrible place to leave me, Leah. I need book two, preferably yesterday.

First off, wow. Like, wow. Thank you so much for choosing me to be an Arc reader.
This book totally hit all the twists and turns it needed 👏 I LOVE this book. It has easily become one of my favorites.
And Haven! Wasn't expecting ANY of that with our girl Haven. I was hoping she would have made a different choice in the end, but I am still so excited to see what the fall out for that was. And then there's Col. He's perfect. Total enemies to lovers, and I can't wait to see what else Haven has up her sleeves. Always love a badass FMC.

The Dragon Reaper by Leah Nightcrest is a dark slowburn enemies to lovers Romantasy book.
It has an unique world building, and takes place in a dark setting of the worlds beyond death.

For me the story is a bit too fast paced and I had to re-read some parts so I could better understand everything I was reading. It's not a bad story but for me I had some difficulties. Overall it gets 3 stars because I like the ideas and I love the writing.

I got this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review.

5/5 ⭐️

Holy hell! Where do I start, this is the first short story I’ve read and I’ll say you won’t be disappointed when you read this. You’re drawn in from the very first page. It is a fast paced story throwing in all the emotions you can ask for, hope, grief, love and everything in between. I loved the fact you find out about the afterlife and souls and Leah’s take on this, throw in gods and magic and well I’m there! I can’t wait for the next book!

I enjoyed reading this book, it was such a good vivid world building slow burn. The beginning was slow enough to keep you excited to learn more and more throughout the book. Havens determination and loyalty was so fierce, she truly loves her people. Col’s stoic inability to ever be close to anyone is truly remarkable, I liked his character development. A new world with so many new fantasy elements was such a whirlwind I loved it. I can’t believe it ended on a cliffhanger, I’m even more eager to read the second book. I’d definitely recommend giving this a read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars for this read

First off, I was fortunate to get an early copy of this book. It was a really fast read for me. The book really hit the ground running. I feel like sometimes books are kind of “tedious” (if you will) to get into with the world building, but this was action packed from the jump. It took twists and turns that I was not expecting. I am very much looking forward to reading more about their story and what happens next. I would love to see a spinoff series is out the gods stories and what happened there! Loved the book. Looking forward to book 2!

Holy space balls batman! I just finished this book and I cannot speak highly enough! This is my first time reading this author's work and definitely won't be the last. From the very beginning I was drawn in to the pages, and it continued all the way to the end. There is intrigue and action and such a unique storyline. Pacing was perfect. It's a slow burn and I loved the way the author portrayed the progression of the relationship. There is no spice really, but it didn't even need it! Thank you so much to the author for allowing me to read an eARC. Honestly, I absolutely loved it!

Wow.

I saw a 300ish page epub and thought. How much world building can really happen here. Boy was I wrong. The world is new, creative and also intriguing.

As a parent myself I really understood the placing your child above all else. I just need more of this world. So refreshing.

Immediately going to read the trilogy that happens before this book. I need to read more about Col.

Very enjoyable!

I was unsure what to expect here, but I flew through this book!! I can’t wait for number 2 I need to see what’s going to happen. I was told the main MMC was written in a past series of this authors so I wasn’t sure if we would get much backstory, but there was tons of back story on both main characters! You didn’t feel lost or like you needed to read the other series’s to know what happened with the MMC. I would definitely recommend this book, it’s a shorter but great read!

I love when a cliff hanger has me biting my nails waiting for the next book to come out. I was surprised to read so much development in a novel of this size. I can’t wait to see how Haven and Col’s story plays out. A civilization is on the brink of extinction and gods, fae, witchbound, and a dragon reaper are all entwined. I loved the characters and as you continue into the story you keep getting bits and pieces of information about Haven and Col past.

I got this book as a ARC review from the author. Okay so this book grabbed me by the throat from the get go and didn’t let go till the end. It was one wild fast paced edge of your seat ride. I stayed up waaaayyy too late reading this amazing fantastic book. I am cheering for Col and Haven to keep fighting the good fight. I loved Haven and her special powers and Col as a dragon shifter and reaper ? So cool!
I am now impatiently waiting for book 2.

It was fun, exciting, and had so much depth and detail that made me feel connected and immersed in the story immediately and through the whole book. I loved how there was lots of fun references and pieces that made me think or laugh out loud (or want to throw the book at times). I was so invested that I felt like I was part of the story too.

Havens story is so powerful, her traumas her hurts and pain are so unique and how she carries herself through those is amazing. I am the type of reader who can usually predict where a storyline is going and when I say that this book had my jaw on the floor MANY times I am not exaggerating,Leah, you have done an absolutely amazing job at getting me hooked on this story!!! It will be an eagerly (impatiently) anticipated wait for book 2!! Bring on some more Haven and Col

I received an advanced reader copy of this book, thanks to the author... This is great story that I thoroughly enjoyed... the world building was intricate and the magic system was something so different that it made the FMC, Haven, an exciting heroine while the broody MMC Col, the Dragon Reaper is the perfect mix of grumpy and protective... the story has unexpected plot twists that left me wanting more... can't wait for Book 2😊

Fantastic! This is a unique spin from some of the more recent popular romantasy. It was fast paced and I found myself always trying to sneak in the next chapter. I loved the twist of thinking the MMC was the devoted king only to switch to villain. I loved the FMC’s compassion with the young soul. I’m looking forward to the next book in the duology!
