I say I love my husband ... but I can’t wait for him to die.
I’m Mrs. Charles Hayward. Every night, I make sure my husband comes home to a clean house and dinner on the table.
It’s important that I please him. After all, Charles has provided me with a beautiful house, an assortment of dresses, and a sensible car to run his errands.
Our marriage isn’t what I imagined when I was younger, but Charles insists it’s for the best.
My husband is a very smart man. He knows so many things.
Except for just a few...
He doesn’t know that I hate him. Or that I know what he’s been doing. Or that I have a plan for him.
But it’s good for a wife to have secrets.
Especially when my husband has no idea what's coming.
Rowen Chambers has done it again!! Oh my gosh, this was SUCH an entertaining read. The last book I read by her was "Behind Closed Doors", and if I remember correctly, that one also had a manipulative husband, so clearly she knows exactly how to write characters that get under your skin 😭
I lowkey HATED Charles in this book because he was seriously getting on my nerves the entire time, but let's just say revenge definitely won in the end and he got his own little “happy” ending. 😭
As someone who is a complete sucker for domestic thrillers, this one really took the cake because it was THAT good. Kathy, the neighbour, was also working my last nerve at times 💀, and I actually loved the little 1950s references throughout the book. Some of them were definitely lowkey sexist, but honestly, they fit the story so well.
I don't want to spoil anything, but if you hate manipulative husbands and want a book that'll have you screaming at your Kindle, phone, laptop, or physical copy, then THIS is the book for you! Rowen Chambers seriously never disappoints.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been on a bit of a run of *meh* books lately, but THIS ONE felt SO GOOD. 😂
I really enjoyed this! At first, I was getting so frustrated with her because I was basically yelling at the book, **“Girl, your husband is gaslighting you! HOW ARE YOU NOT SEEING THIS?!”** 😂 But as she starts putting the pieces together and realizing that things aren't quite what she's been led to believe, the fun really begins.
And then...**86%.** 👀
That is when this story decided to flip the table, and I was HERE FOR IT. I absolutely did not see the story going where it did, and that final stretch was so satisfying. And the ending? **Perfection.** No complaints. Chef's kiss. 👌 I loved the unhinged housewife vibes, the manipulation, the secrets, and watching her go from questioning herself to realizing exactly what was happening. After some of the duds I've read lately, this was exactly the kind of psychological thriller I needed.

"I say I love my husband… but it’s a lie."
His Perfect Wife is a domestic thriller with a premise that feels genuinely fresh.
Emily is a fascinating protagonist. Stuck in a 1950s housewife mentality, she keeps to herself, tends to her home, and rarely ventures out beyond errands and grocery runs. There is clearly more to Emily than meets the eye, and I found myself completely invested in her from the very first page.
Heidi, the single new neighbor, really kept this from feeling predictable. She adds another layer of complexity to the story, and I was never quite sure where things were going or how it was going to end.
Her husband Charles 😑 I had very strong feelings about. I'll leave it at that.
I really enjoyed this one and found myself sneaking quick reading sessions while waiting in line at the store or sitting in the car after returning home from said store lol. I needed to see what was gunna happen!
If you enjoy domestic thrillers and a whole lot of tension that keeps you guessing, this one is worth your time.
His Perfect Wife is the kind of psychological thriller where you *HOPE* the wife offs the husband in the first chapter. What a despicable human being! Rowan Chambers does a great job keeping readers engaged, reading on to see WHY Emily stays married to this piece of human excrement. Some of the scenes are so nauseating that I gagged while reading them. It's intentional. Vicious. Evil.
Dr. Charles Hayward has always dreamed of having the perfect wife. He picked Emily to satisfy his every fantasy and their arrangement ensures his happiness. That is, until a new neighbor, prosecuting attorney Heidi Sullivan, moves in and Emily starts disappearing without his permission or approval. Their perfect lifestyle depends on Emily fulfilling her role at home. When she steps out of line, their perfectly crafted world is bound to fall apart.
Gahhhhh! It was SO frustrating to read all of Charles' crimes and scheming against Emily! Readers are compelled to keep reading, hoping to discover what horrible intel Charles has against Emily and why in the world she would stay with him! Once readers learn the big secret, the infeasible premise makes the story a little hard to believe and continue reading. Maybe Emily is not intelligent and easy to manipulate? As more details unfurl, the ridiculousness and incredibility are too hard to stomach until the final reveal at the end. Emily definitely needed someone to save her from Charles and herself.
Heidi is the real hero of this story: she's a sounding board of intelligence with a strong BS sensor.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Charles treats his wife, Emily, so horribly. I almost stopped a third of the way through because how controlling he was to her. He does not allow her to do anything and wants her to be like a wife in the 1960's. When Heidi moves in across the street, Emily finally has a friend she could confide in. Charles is a well known surgeon who everyone loves and can do no wrong. I really enjoyed it and I will continue to read more by this author.
