Flexibility, balance, whole-body strength, recovery, range of motion, focus--a regular yoga practice brings many benefits to people who lead active lives. For athletes in particular, the dynamic stretching of athlete-friendly yoga poses and properly designed yoga exercises can counteract the tightness and imbalances that come from daily workouts.

In "Everyday Yoga," certified coach and registered yoga teacher Sage Rountree shares the yoga positions and exercises she has developed in her own yoga studio, at Kripalu, and working with active people during her popular yoga clinics around the country. She guides experienced yoga practitioners and yoga beginners on the best ways to design and develop their own at-home yoga routines.

"Everyday Yoga" provides endless opportunities to explore and practice yoga in your own home: How to design yoga sessions to address the whole body or specific areasHow to sequence yoga poses for a satisfying practiceHow to create yoga routines of varying duration from 5 to 50 minutesHow to make yoga poses easier or more challenging

Each "Everyday Yoga" routine moves the spine in every direction and loosens tight hips in routines that can last from 5 to 50 minutes, leaving readers satisfied and relaxed. By sequencing several routines together, readers can build stronger, more flexible, injury-resistant bodies.

Spoiler: I thought the name of the author sounded familiar...then I saw the pictures in this book and knew for sure. I went to grad school with Sage Rountree. WEIRD!!! And I can tell you, she's always been an awesome and intense person.

That aside, I have to say this is a great book for beginning yogis. She has a very analytic, athletic, and non-woo-woo way at looking at yoga. While I, myself, prefer a yoga practice that's a bit more spiritual, there's a huge place for 'just the asana please' yoga. Having lived in the deep South, where some people are wary that yoga is 'a religion', this approach is definitely the way to gain traction.

The book is terrific for its menu approach, and how she understands what a good yoga practice should look like--moving the spine in six directions, etc. She gives several options of mini sequences to do just that. As someone with a chronic illness who sometimes just doesn't have the 'juice' to do an energetic practice, having a legit, clearly well-studied yoga teacher say that it's fine to do spine movements on your knees, on your back, etc. Each sequence has some 'sweeter' and 'spicier' options for those days you do have some juice, and she has great ways of joining everything up.

If you want a good yoga book about introducing sequences--of viewing yoga as a series rather than just isolated poses, she is a superstar.

This is a wonderful book (a manual, really) that leads you through all the basic and intermediate yoga poses you can handle. The pictures are perfect and the steps included are precise and helpful. The manual itself is spiral-bound so it can lay out flat to assist you in your practice. It is divided into 4 parts.

The 1st section is an introductory chapter on building your everyday practice. It included helpful tips on how to use the book, guidelines for practicing yoga, and tips on setting up places and times to practice. The 2nd section gives simple instructions on warm-ups, short pose sequences, and cool downs. It also includes simple breathing and meditation exercises. The 3rd section links all of these together into short and long practices and the 4th and final section provides weekly plans to begin practicing as well as providing plans to build up to everyday practice.

The entire manual is clear and concise and anyone from beginners to experts can get something out of this. If a beginner has never ever done yoga, they may want to go to a few classes to get the hang of it, but otherwise it is a great way to practice yoga on your own without a fancy studio and gobs of money.

I couldn’t get into the analogy of yoga practices being compared to meals all throughout the book, but I loved the color pictures and routines she set up in this manual. Easy to get started and quick info to learn how each pose helps the body.

This is a great book to take with you while traveling. The practices are broken down into small sections that you put together however you want to make a short or long practice. Easily customizable to suit your needs or you can do one of the short or long form practice that is already laid out for you. The last section gives you a full couple of weeks of how to lay out your practices depending on how often you do yoga (every day, every other day, twice a week.
