Not only is Alex pregnant, something punishable by jail time, but Gerome, the father of the baby, is a vampire prince. When strangers invade Alex’s home and kidnap him, he doesn’t know who is responsible, if he’ll ever see the man he loves again, or even get to see the child growing inside him.
Considering himself the father of his lover’s child, Sam has a hard time standing around and letting others plan Alex’s rescue. But when the Prince and his trackers find an important clue, the race to save his beloved is on. Now all he can do is cross his fingers that that the scheme they’ve devised will work.
When Prince Gerome receives ransom demands, the instructions are clear: mate a complete stranger or he’ll never see Alex or the child he carries again. Will he be able to convince his newly intended to help, or will those seeking to dethrone his family win this evil game of blackmail?
Caution: Contains a kidnapping, unwanted matings, a scheming king, way too many people that follow their own plans and a highly pregnant Alex
This is the second book in the Unexpected series and not a standalone. Please grab a copy of Alex's Surprise before you read this book.
As much as I had wanted to, I wasn't able to jump immediately into this second book in Chris McHart's 'Unexpected' series. I really liked the first installment that gave me a good view of the world building the author created. I was also introduced to Alex, Sam, and Gerome.
Some time has passed and Alex only has a few more weeks to go before the C-section to deliver his baby. He and Sam are madly in love, although having been kept confined in their apartment for the past four months has made Alex a little stir crazy. I can only imagine. When Alex is abducted, Sam has no choice but to contact Gerome for help. The answers Sam gets from Gerome are definitely not what he was expecting, and one little tidbit blew Sam's mind. Literally.
Gerome is forced to involve his father, the King, since Gerome is the heir to the throne and he'd kept the secret of Alex's baby from his family, the King is not happy. What happens next made me feel so bad for Gerome, and Sam was feeling just as upset over what Gerome had given up in order to save Alex and the baby.
A good ending with a nice happy ever after for Sam and Alex, along with a beautiful baby.
So I thought the second book was really good. Lots of emotions and the writing was done great to bring those emotions out and be believable. I really liked how this story is much different than other mpreg stories. It was like nothing I have read before. I thought the character depth was just right. I love Alex and Sam. And Gerome well, he was a hit and miss for me. This story was very enjoyable.
***Nice Conclusion to Alex and Sam’s Story - 3.5 Stars***
This book picks up exactly where the first in the serial left off, so if you have not read Alex's Surprise, you need to do so or you’ll miss half the story. I appreciated the significant amount of action that this novella provided, especially as the first was fairly mundane with the exception of Alex’s panic over being pregnant.
This story has a good plot, and while the pacing is still choppy, it’s less noticeable this time around. The main characters both experience personal growth that is lovely to see, and the peripheral characters are more in-depth and enriching to the overall story. The curiosity that is three men sharing “fatherhood” claims when only two are a couple is entertaining to behold.
I felt badly for the vampire sire in this book. It is clear that he is heavily manipulated by his father in return for assistance in saving the king’s grandchild, yet he still doesn’t come across as particularly important to the story overall. I’m rating this at 3.5 stars, rounding it up for sites that don’t accept halves. It’s certainly better than the first part of the serial. I’m curious about the next installment with its million-mile-long-title Mate Me, Hate Me, Date Me, Love Me.
Before I say anything about Saving Alex I’d like to point out that this book is the sequel to Alex’s Surprise which you really need to read before starting Saving Alex. Since the book is available for free in the Goodreads M/M group as well as through most retailers, reading it first shouldn’t be a hardship for anyone.
The peace and reassurance Alex and Sam found at the end of Alex’s Surprise unfortunately doesn’t last long. Only a few days after the two men have been reassured about Alex’s pregnancy and the delivery of the baby in a few weeks time, Alex is abducted by two men who break into the apartment he shares with Sam.
The room Alex is held in has no windows, although it is not an uncomfortable environment. While he manages to establish a bond with the man who brings him food and drink he has no idea who has kidnapped him or why. More worryingly, he has no idea whether or not Sam is safe.
Sam, meanwhile, contacts Gerome and soon finds himself up to his neck in Vampire politics and surrounded by shifters who are there to help find and rescue Alex. Poor Sam feels completely helpless while he has no idea where the love of his life is and as he watches Gerome being forced into life changing actions the vampire doesn’t want but has to make in order to keep Alex safe.
This is an action pact story. An awful lot happens and we’re getting a better insight into the workings of the Vampire covens. And while this book – unlike the first one – does end the story in a very satisfactory way I could see at least two spin-off stories resulting from this book. If I’m right about that I will make a point of reading them when they become available.
Alex’s Surprise and Saving Alex kept me thoroughly entertained and I have to admit that my first introduction to Mpreg when better than I thought it might. While I had quite a few reservations about the whole concept before I started reading Alex’s story, those have mostly disappeared now. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I already knew I would enjoy Chris McHart’s words, I would probably never have made the leap so I am grateful I read and enjoyed Never Wrong and Grenzen by this author last year.
This is the sequel to Alex's Surprise. It was a free read that was offered during the MM writing event, LoR this year.
I accidentally bought it. I was browsing it on Amazon. It was 2.99. Sadly, I can't say it was worth the money.
I dislike writing reviews that aren't positive. I just didn't like it that much. Perhaps if I hadn't spend 2.99 on it I would have felt better. But I feel like I was robbed. Robbed that this sequel had to be paid for, when the first story was purposelessly written for the free writing event. I dislike it when authors write for an event with a cliffhanger and then make people purchase to see what happens next. At least give the read a warning.
"Hey, it's free but it ends with a cliffhanger/questions left unanswered. It's okay you can BUY the sequel."
Alex and Sam are still together. Alex is hiding at home and is heavily pregnant. He only gets out when Gerome, his baby daddy, takes him to the doctors. Gerome is very okay with helping out but even he considers the kid as Sam and Alex's.
Well, Alex is kidnapped and Gerome's truth/secret comes out. Sam is anxious to find Alex and save him(with Gerome's help). We see some more of Gerome during this story and the set up of vampire covens. Their inner workings and politics are shock Sam.
Anyhow... things go do and Alex is saved.
There is an epilogue of sorts, it was all okay. It wasn't something that will stick with you for a long time. I actually had to sit here and think about this story as I was writing this review to remember how it ended. It had already started to fade away.
Voto: 3.5
Saving Alex is the continuation of the M/M Goodreads story Alex's Surprise. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Alex's Surprise was a friends to lovers story with quite a twist. In Saving Alex we get the fall out from a surprise pregnancy, family drama and politics and a plot that threatens the budding relationship between Alex and Sam. Gerome played a much bigger role in this story. With all of the secrets he felt more awkward than anything else. I hated his mating, as well as his father, but you are supposed to dislike him, so well done.
I would have liked to see more detail and the story more cohesive, especially at the end. It was difficult to get the full effect of their story in 105 pages. There was a lot to digest there at the end.
It was a sweet love story with twists and turns, Sam and Alex were fantastic characters.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was much better than the first book - there is a lot of suspense that went on with this one. Alex is kidnapped & at first I thought it was the king, Gerome's father, but it turned out it wasn't. There is a lot that goes on with Sam & Gerome trying to find Alex; Gerome being forced to mate; some side characters in bad situations and the birth of Alex's baby. I hated how Gerome treated his mate, he was a total jerk to him and I want to beat the crap out of him.
E-book provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 2nd book in this series and it was even better than the 1st book. Sam steps up to support Alex and to be a father to Alex and Gerome's baby. When Alex is kidnapped Gerome has to mate a stranger so his father the vampire king will help him save Alex. The supporting characters are interesting and round out the story very well. This book is very well written and fun to read. I am looking forward to the next book and want to know what happens with Gerome and Luis!
This was a great ride for the second book in the series. Alex and Sam have cemented their relationship and created a real bond. There are moments when Gerome seems to be a real flake, but when the truth is revealed his reasons become clear. It was wonderful that even in the midst of everything that Alex shows his compassion and concern for others. Poor Gerome! I only hope that the author gives him a HEA soon. Adult read
Better. The fact that they wouldn't educate people on what caused a male pregnancy's so they could prevent it, yet locked them up in prison if it occurred, still makes no sense.
But the story line picked up, and was a much smoother read than the first one.
I liked Gerome a lot better this book. Sam and Alex still cute. Who the hell cares about Josh. What happened with Gerome?
With the surprises throughout this book, it keeps you guessing and trying to figure things out! The next book in the series should be just as good ! Enjoy !
This one was definitely moved quicker and had more happening than the first one! I liked it for the most part but really did not like some things within the story.
Sam and Alex live in a world where paranormals and humans are integrated, however, it's illegal for a man to be pregnant, which is different. Alex has become pregnant after a one night stand with a vampire prince, Gerome, (Altho Alex didn't know he was a prince at the time), and his long life friend steps up and claims the baby, falls in love with Alex, and helps to hide his pregnancy. The main plot of this book centers around trying to rescue Alex from a kidnapping. It was actually well edited, nicely written, and kept me absorbed in the story, especially since vampires were involved. The characters were significantly portrayed, and I believe that Sam and even Alex were my favorite characters due to their very thoughtful and unselfish natures during a harrowing time for them. This had some suspense and mystery, which has made this an ultimately entertaining read. :)
This was wholly surprising to me..a male pregnancy! But it turned out that I could not set this book down until I finished it. I am really impressed with the depth of each character and how by the end of this story male pregnancy is no longer unbelievable! Great interesting dialogue and superb suspense and I can't wait to read more!
This book picks up two weeks after the end of the first book in the "Unexpected" series. Alex and his former best friend Sam are now a strongly committed couple. They love the life growing inside of Alex. Gerome the baby's Sire (biological father) continues to offer financial assistance, take them to doctor's appointments, but continues to remain a bit distant. Alex and Sam are still shocked that Gerome is a Vampire Prince and despite having several siblings is next in line to become King.
Chris McHart really did a wonderful job of world building regarding Vampires in Munich. You forget the story isn't taking place in an US city. The vocabulary and grammar are excellent. You don't feel like the author lives in Germany. I really commend her. There are quite a few poorly written mpreg stories. This is NOT one of them.
This book is full of danger, excitement, intrigue, parental demands, scheming, fear, and abuse. I didn't read the book summary and was shocked at the reason why Alex needed saving. Sam was devastated and despite his seemingly chilly demeanor Gerome immediately flew into action to help find Alex and their unborn child. Gerome kept Sam focused and from breaking down. It is at this point that we learn why Gerome was so adamant about not claiming his child. We meet Gerome's parents and learn some disturbing customs / traditions among these German Vampires.
When a Vampire, especially those with any money, status, or Royal heritage takes a mate, there is often a large sum of money that changes hands between the parents, which means just what it implies, whoever is purchased is owned by their new mate. Some Vampires are pure, but many have been mixed with Humans, making them more amenable to the circumstances they find themselves in as Mates to both powerful and power-hungry Vampires. These poor Mates can be mistreated, verbally and physically abused, and nothing can be done. It's just the way things have been for centuries.
The dominant mate could be either male or female. Each can be kind or very cruel. The more modern offspring do as they are told, but not without some arguing, begging, resistance, but ultimately they comply. As in Gerome's case he'd been free to find a mate, but since he hadn't, his Royal father, King Harold used the situation with Alex as a strong-arm tactic to get his son's co-operation in meeting a selected candidate Luis. Demanding proof of bonding and consummation before trackers were deployed to locate the scent of those responsible for Alex's disappearance.
Alex is scared, alone, and frightened for his life, as well as, those of his child and boyfriend. He doesn't know where he's at, but he is disturbed by the increasing violence inflicted on the young man that brings him his meals. He prays that the Prince and Sam will come for him. Little does Alex know all that is happening in his absence.
A forced mating, a fake mating, a despondent mate, a happy King, an angry Prince, a frightened but sympathetic guest, and were trackers hired for their keen sense of smell. Espionage, betrayal, sniffing out or tracking down clues. Violent fighting, conniving parents, confusion, panic, gunshots, a bedside vigil, a secret room, and finally a HEA.
*A free copy of the book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.* This is the sequel of Alex’s Surprise. Alex is almost done with his pregnancy and he’s happy and totally in love with his boyfriend Sam. His baby’s father Gerome is a vampire and a prince but apart from Alex, Sam and Dr. Brown, nobody knows that he fathered a child. Nobody musts know about it because Gerome doesn’t want to mate with Alex and his father, King Harold, will be furious about it. When Alex gets kidnapped by a rival coven to get Gerome to mate with Josh, his kidnapper’s nephew, Gerome has to ask for help and his father tells him that he has to mate with Luis or he won’t help him . During his stay with his kidnappers, Alex has the chance to meet Ash, his kidnapper’s mate, and there, a friendship starts and Alex will take him with him. I don’t want to tell you much more because it will ruin the story but I’ve to say that the love between Sam and Alex was really powerful and I liked how the author made me feel every single emotion they felt through the pages. I’m very happy that Gerome did the right thing, even if it meant to never have his HEA with a man he loves. I wanted to hug him really tight when Sam described him sad or heartbroken. Maybe we can beg the author to have Gerome’s book. *winks* This is a lovely story with a really sweet last chapter so guys… go for it. 5 stars.
Original review on Molly Lolly Four stars! This story is the second in the series and you definitely need to read them in order. I liked getting to see more of Gerome and his place in the relationship. There’s NO menage or any hints that any of them want one. But he’s the biological father of the child so he’s part of the family, even if it’s platonic. You learn why Gerome seemed cold and unfeeling in the first book. There are political battles with all kinds of negotiating so everyone gets what they want, and for Alex to come back safely. It’s all very intriguing. Alex and Sam are wonderfully happy together at the end of the story and you know they’re in it for the long haul. However, there are still some things left unanswered. I truly hope there will be more books in this series because the universe Ms. McHart created is exciting. She packs so much into the books, it’s almost effortless. Then you realize you’ve gotten to the end of a short story and felt like you’ve read a novel. I love it and will definitely be reading more by her in the future.
Have you ever read a book where some small thing happens so often it keeps yanking you out of the story? People in this book seem to be constantly sobbing, hugging, or fainting. I understand it's an emotional time but several characters burst into tears multiple times--the word "sobbing" could have been the basis for a drinking game. The hugging was truly strange. People who were almost complete strangers--all guys--were offering each other full-on, comforting hugs. And what was up with the fainting? Alex fainted twice and Sam fainted once. Fainting is kind of an unusual occurrence but these guys are swooning like there's no tomorrow. The story itself was full of suspense and surprises, a good story in and of itself. Gerome shows a more human side (including hugging on Sam a few times and shedding some tears). There is pregnancy drama and a cute ending. The groundwork is laid for lots of other budding relationships that could spin out into further series entries. While I don't want to read the one about Gerome and Luis's mating (sounds a little dark to me), I would be interesting in reading further installments in the series.
FiveStars Saving Alex I read the first one, Alex's Surprise, and I recommend you read that one first. It is a heart-felt, quick read that captivates your attention.
I can't believe this is the author's second book!!!!!!! The writing is perfectly filled with beautiful, intense Hero's.
Now, on to Saving Alex. This author grabbed my attention from Page 1, RAWR!! Hot stuff and then proceeded in a heart-pounding pace to pull me in with her words. I loved the dual POV from both Hero's of the story. They capture your heart with their intense, heart-felt emotions. It might be a quick read, but there is a lot of activity going on to keep your attention.
Gerome is a big part of this story, and I enjoyed seeing him in it. I really enjoyed the aspect that Gerome's parents are fully on board with their son loving men and being with one. It does my heart good to see parents fully invested in their child's life, no matter who they love!!!!!!!
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This series began with a one night stand which resulted in an unfortunate accident. The story kept me enthralled as the two protagonists realized that they were in love. A male pregnancy is illegal because it is a result of a relationship between two different races. This means that Alex must be kept out of sight. Sam and Alex fall in love during the time the pregnancy progresses. Gerome the vampire sire will help financially but will not interfere with Alex and Sam's relationship. End book one. The compulsion to get to book two was very strong. It was a pleasure to get to it. The pregnancy is almost to term. An unexpected development results in Gerome having to let Sam know who he really is. The suspense builds almost to the end. I really enjoyed this series. I would love to see more. It is light but very pleasant reading. A different slant on familiar story line.
I received a free advance copy of this book to proofread and review. This sequel was longer and more ambitious than the first one. It involved more people, but was less complex in some ways. Most of the book concerns the attempt to recover Alex, who had been kidnapped. There are also several scenes involving the politics of Prince Gerome's family and the vampire court. The only sex scene was at the beginning, before Alex was taken. We experience Alex's panic at being taken and held captive, his boyfriend Sam's worry, and what Gerome has to do to get Alex back. There is also some banter with the numerous secondary characters. I enjoyed the tension and action throughout the book. It was an enjoyable read. Everything is resolved at the end, but there is room for taking the story further if the author wishes to do so.
I'm pissed I must spend $3 to know how What I would do? Buy the second of the series IF it was a series, with MORE characters, second book with another couple, or another situation with the same couple. That mean an END of something in book 1, not be forced to buy this one to know how a freebie end . So I will not buy it. Sorry if I'm honest but that's what I think To promote himself/herself a writer can give samples of the book. That's how it felt, promotion, not a participation in a free event.
