After drinking some brain juice made by aliens, Nathan and Micah are suddenly brilliant. And these aliens are looking for a few good humans--extra smart, extra young humans.
Robert Lawrence Stine known as R. L. Stine and Jovial Bob Stine, is an American novelist and writer, well known for targeting younger audiences. Stine, who is often called the Stephen King of children's literature, is the author of dozens of popular horror fiction novellas, including the books in the Goosebumps, Rotten School, Mostly Ghostly, The Nightmare Room and Fear Street series.
R. L. Stine began his writing career when he was nine years old, and today he has achieved the position of the bestselling children's author in history. In the early 1990s, Stine was catapulted to fame when he wrote the unprecedented, bestselling Goosebumps® series, which sold more than 250 million copies and became a worldwide multimedia phenomenon. His other major series, Fear Street, has over 80 million copies sold.
Stine has received numerous awards of recognition, including several Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards and Disney Adventures Kids' Choice Awards, and he has been selected by kids as one of their favorite authors in the NEA's Read Across America program. He lives in New York, NY.
R.L. Stine claimed in a 2014 interview that before becoming famous, he wrote erotic fiction for a men's magazine under a pseudonym. Among his extensive oeuvre, Brain Juice offers the strongest evidence for that claim, containing so many out of context gems that it's hard to believe they're not deliberate. For instance:
"Morggul bobbed up and down on his fat, wet body, peering through the fogged up window."
"He licked them excitedly with two fat purple tongues."
"He hopped on one foot over to his dresser and grabbed a hunk of tissues to wipe the gunk off."
"He stood very erect, sweat rolling thickly down his emerald body."
"You’re going to put those down our throats?” “It may be a little uncomfortable,” Gobbul replied. “But after half-an-hour or so, you’ll get used to it."
No wonder "Jovial Bob" lists Brain Juice as one of his favorite Goosebumps books.
This was such a great book! What wild ride, not necessary scary but it's mostly entertaining full of action and an underlying themes I found myself that touched me about being smart is nothing without confidence as it's mostly referenced in the first half and that was such a notable theme. I also love the variety of atmosphere throughout the book it was balanced in familiar suburban territory and also later set outside the earth which I found really unique especially Goosebumps books tend to set in only one isolated settings, one other notable Goosebumps book I can find that has this similar changes of settings is in Vampire Breath.
Overall, an outstanding entry on S2K series and will probably be placed in the top of my rankings once I read all of them, just not my personal favorite but it's almost there...
A perfect example of a great Goosebumps book that mostly deals with humor and crazy rather than being spooky or nightmare fueled.
📚📖WOAH, this book was so much better than I initially expected it to be.
The book is about Lindy and her stepbrother Nathan. They have a really big problem. They are stupid. They fail every math test and struggle to do basic puzzles like crosswords. One day they get sick of being dumb and go to there uncle: Dr. Frank King. While the kids are explaining there problem to them he thinks of a genius idea 💡. He gets a bottle of grape juice out and pours it into a container. He then prints out a logo for “Brain Juice”. He then sticks the logo on the grape juice container. The idea of this supposed “Brain Juice” is when the kids drink it they will believe that it’s making them smarter, while it’s not actually doing anything, the placebo effect. But while Dr. King is not looking, two aliens pour “Brain Energiser Liquid” in the container.
This is just an amazing book. The fact that the kids go into another planet is just insane. Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I read all 25 Goosebumps Series 2000 books for a 2-hour YouTube video, where I reviewed and ranked them all, which you can check out here: https://youtu.be/VsNwNpeqgLo
Brain Juice from the Goosebumps Series 2000 Series is a book that I have some nostalgia for, even though I read this book as an adult.I remember being in school and this kid had this book and I remember seeing this big gross brain and wondering what this book was about.I think at the time I didn't even know about the Series 2000 books,so I was probably pretty mesmerized. The story itself starts off with two aliens Morggul and Gobbul. They are hiding inside a scientists pantry. The scientists name is Dr.King,so they assume, he is the King of scientists. The two aliens are looking for slaves for their emperor, but the slaves must be super smart. These aliens are described as frog like creatures ,one short and stout and one with tusks both having tentacles with mouths on them. The aliens also drip slime from their bodies. Before the aliens can do anything, his niece and nephew pop up on his doorstep. The two kids are named Nathan and lindy. They come over complaining about not being smart and it frustrates them.Dr.King tells them to study more but the kids want more, after all he is a scientist.Dr.King comes up with a solution. He will give them some grapejuice, and say it's a chemical he made to make people smarter. He pours some and gets a phone call so he leaves the liquid unattended so the aliens come in and pour in their Brain Energizer Fluid. The kids end up drinking it and going back home.It takes a while for the liquid to start taking effect, but when it does, things get pretty Intresting. The kids start acing tests and at first the teacher thinks they are cheating ,but when they take another and pass,he knows something is up.They do crosswords instantly. They start answering Jeopardy questions. They even correct the teachers on some occasions. They even get through next year's homework assignments.Everything is going good until they get kicked out of school and run into these men in black agents wanting the kids to help them with government things and want to dicect their brains. The kids run away and end up finally meeting the aliens. This is where I'm going to leave the review because we're almost at the end.I had some fun with Brain Juice, but not as much as I anticipated.I really enjoyed the alien stuff. They were gross and very threatening. One of the aliens keep mentioning eating the kids if they don't get smart and what he says is very graphic. One of the scenes the aliens threaten to eat the youngest sibling Brenda, and one of the aliens offers to share a leg.Oh and they bite a rats head off. They also keep mentioning eating human hearts. The aliens make this book alot better then I remember it.The whole getting smart thing was just ok.It was fun but nothing amazing.I give Brain Juice a four out of five stars.
What a fun/funny goosebumps book! This one was pretty entertaining, though mostly in the department of humor. It wasn't scary at all. There was portion of the book I found a little emotional during the middle, and was surprised for the book to turn so serious - but then things got crazy and hilarious again. This book reminds me a lot of the Twilight Zone episode where aliens grant a human super-strength as an experiment. I wouldn't be surprised if that episode played some sort of role in R.L.'s inspiration for this book. All in all, a good, entertaining entry in s2k, but not exactly outstanding, either. I think the lack of seriousness and scares to this one makes it enjoyable and offers a nice change of pace, but that can only take you so far. I give this one a 3.5 / stars I will say, though, that this is a more satisfying sci-fi book than Invasion of the Body Squeezers.
Apparently one of R.L. Stine's personal favorites and I can see why, an absolute blast throughout with some really great creature designs, fantastic imagery, and some pretty solid sci-fi action. A no-brainer really
I initially picked this up because I heard RL Stine say in an interview that it was his favorite Goosebumps book, but nobody bought it -- or something like that. So I thought, Well ... I wonder what I could learn by reading the book that nobody bought ...
The book is about a couple of dumb kids that drink alien juice and get really smart. Being smart causes a bunch of problems for them. Then, the aliens that gave them the juice capture them and take them back to their planet to use them as 'smart' slaves.
There were some things that stuck out to me -- particularly the word usage. For example, the word silvery -- a weird, terrible adjective -- is used multiple times in the book -- it's even on the back cover -- and it bugged me every time I saw it. I know it's a middle grade book, but the majority of the sentences are painfully choppy.
I finished the book in about an hour, I think. It is a funny book. I was actually a bit tricked by the story, making me feel like the [sic] stupid. I think that the book might have sold less than the others because it reaches into the sci-fi genre which is hard to break into and scifi is a smaller niche than most people realize (large enough to sell lots of books, though). Also, kids like the scary books and this content is more humorous. The cover art could have been more imaginitive than a brain.
Anyway, I recommend the book. I will probably add it to my site as an affiliate product, but I'm not sure (too many other things to write about right now).
Special shoutout to Mr. de Santiago, whose copy of this book has fallen into my hands from Amazon. Sadly, it's my property now, so you'll just have to purchase another copy from Amazon.
This book is your typical R. L. Stein fare - cliffhangers on short chapters followed immediately by a less serious payoff afterwards. I read this book a few times as a kid and, coming back to it, I was surprised how much about the aliens I remembered.
It's a book I think kids who enjoy reading would enjoy, but its not Harry Potter. If you're not attached to this book like I was when I was younger, there's nothing here worth bothering with. There are plenty of better Stein books, like The Cuckoo Clock of Doom or Don't Go To Sleep!, which still freaks me out today.
I remember buying this as a kid from a WH Smiths and being embarrassed about handing over this book with the weird cover to the cashier. The picture of the gushing brain on the front is a sight to behold and has stuck in my memory for years.
Anyway, rereading this as an adult has me impressed. It departs from usual Goosebumps fare into purest sci-fi and I loved it. I enjoyed the kids not being the brightest, as usually the protagonists in these sort of books are 'nerds'. I thought the parents and the uncle were incredibly sweet. The plot was fun and well paced. Full marks!
It's the only Goosebumps book I've read from the 2000 series. I've read most of the original Goosebumps books as a kid and have revisited some recently aged 39 (!) - and was still entertained. I've decided to read Brain Juice from the 2000 series only because Stine said it was the Goosebumps book he was most proud of writing. And quite frankly, I can see why. It is a bit edgier, with dark humor, funnier and as creative as the original books. Just pure fun.
While I thought the ending was a bit flat and rushed, the lead-up was really well paced and I liked the subversion of the bullying trope - in this book the smart kids are the ones who are bullies. Plenty of dramatic irony with the the perspective and overall a pretty fun book
