This long-awaited reprint of Lauren Monger's 2015 SLEEPWALKING is incisively relateable, following Clementine and her gritty punk friends as they navigate the perils of ex-partner drama, too-loud house shows, and the overwhelming ennui that is their twenties. Clem's a possum. Her friends are raccoons, badgers, and squirrels. More importantly, they're trying.
I think maybe the title is the key to this graphic short story about some twenty-something guys going nowhere, showing up at a party, drinking, being profane, insulting each other. Vapid, familiar, sideways living. Guys, bar scene, eh.
So it's either A) a worthless comic or B) a well-designed portrait of the worthless life. Some readers picked A; I pick B, because the artwork, the depiction of a collection of anthropomorphic animal dudes, is designed by a woman I suspect has a history with similar losers.
So I reread it with a lighter tone, for laughs, looking for a kind of darker than Beavis and Butthead vibe, and it works better for me. I'll look for more of her work to see if this might be read as deadpan social critique (of twenty-something dudes/bruhs).
PS: I think I might be doing a better job of appreciating this work. See her Tumblr page:
It’s sh*tty. Really stupid junior high school, high school Level of whatever this is — really really bad- really bad.
It only took a few minutes to read, and it was a complete waste of those few minutes
The highlights are: “ sing us a song about our d*ck fixations.” “ the c*ck gobbling goes on along after the thrill of gobbling c*cks has gone”
Seriously, though in the whole book, that is the BEST part…
The only thing I liked was, there was a goat with I guess a band name on the back of his leather jacket called “unfortunate implications” and I like that as a band name.

I love the art, and the characters are very realistic to early 20-something loser, douchebags you meet when you are also in your early 20's.
I was expecting something a little deeper and darker with the cover, maybe even something dark but still grungy/cutesy like the game Night in the Woods, but it was just a silly, nothing sort-of comic. A glimpse into being an annoying young adult surrounded by other annoying young adults.
I've enjoyed Lauren Monger's work since waaaaay back in the Tumblr days, I was really stoked to see Silver Sprocket did a high quality reprint of this. As always the punks are troubled and the illustrations are gorgeous.
lauren monger is a revelation in comix. i cannot properly review how wonderful the clementine comix are. she communicates so much through body language and use of color. these characters feel so true and honest. i can see the worst and the best in a lot of people i know in them. this is the kind of work that makes you want to know the person behind it.
sleepwalking itself is one extended scene set in an uncomfortable after party. to read more of her stuff, check out monger's tumblr.
