DNF

Brittany Price did what millions of readers do every day. She stopped reading a book she hated and posted about it online. She made it 23% before deciding life was too short to keep reading.

By morning, Brittany is dead.

Her unfinished book is found beside her body, opened to the exact page where she stopped. Tucked inside is a bookmark with four FINISH WHAT YOU START.

Then another reader dies. And another. Different books. Different percentages. The same disturbing pattern.

Longtime reader and reviewer Michelle Clarke starts digging through old posts, deleted reviews, book groups, and years of reading histories, trying to understand why someone is hunting readers who never reached the final page.

Then an old post of Michelle's resurfaces.

Five years ago, she abandoned a thriller at 61%.

Someone remembers.

Someone has been keeping track.

And Michelle may be next.

Go ahead. Put it down.

I wanted to love this one so much more than I actually did.
DNF's premise immediately grabbed me. A reader posts that she DNF’d a book…and by the next morning she’s dead. Then another reader dies. And another. As someone who reads and reviews a ridiculous number of books, that setup was creepy in the best possible way. Suddenly leaving a bad review feels a little more dangerous.
Unfortunately, the idea ended up being stronger than the execution for me.
It’s a very quick read, and there were definitely moments that kept me curious enough to keep going. I wanted to know who was behind everything and why these readers were being targeted. But the writing style and format didn’t completely work for me. It became repetitive in places, and I wanted more depth, more tension, and honestly a little more darkness from such a deliciously twisted premise.
The mystery was entertaining, but I never got that truly unsettled, "I need to know what happens next" feeling I want from a thriller. There were opportunities here to make this seriously creepy, especially with the whole author/reviewer/online book community angle, but it stayed a little too surface-level for me.
Still, I have to give credit where it’s due—the concept is clever, different, and slightly terrifying for those of us who regularly announce to the internet exactly what we think about books.
Not a DNF for me…but not quite a page-turner either.

Interesting premise, and something I’ve thought about to be honest, after seeing people argue in a Facebook book group about giving authors bad reviews. I don’t believe I owe an author a positive review, especially if I’ve bought the book. What one person likes, another might not. That’s just the way it is.
But to the story-
It begins with Brittany posting in her Facebook reading group, Between the Covers, that she DNF’d a book she’d been reading. Brittany receives a text “you should finish it”.
She’s later found dead in her home.
Michelle Clarke, along with her friends Mallory and Priya, are in the same reading group, and Michelle remembers Brittany from the group. When another woman who was in their reading group is found dead, Michelle starts to look back into old posts, and finds that this woman also DNF’d a book, but Michelle has also DNF’d a book. When a third woman is found dead, Michelle thinks she sees a pattern. Could she be next?

The premise had so much potential! A group of friends who meet through a Facebook book group and a killer? The whole concept immediately caught my attention, and I was genuinely interested in seeing where the story would go.

Buuuuut the story DRAGGED. It felt like the same information and situations were being repeated for what seemed like 150 pages too long. At some point, I genuinely started wondering if the author was just repeating information that had already been explained 20–50 pages earlier. Unfortunately, it never seemed to stop.

I ended up skimming the last 20% because I just wanted to know how it would end. I finished it, but the ending was anticlimactic, and by that point, things had gotten so ridiculous that I wasn’t even surprised anymore.

I really wanted to love this one because the premise was so good, but having an interesting concept isn’t enough when the execution doesn’t keep you engaged. Definitely a case of loving the idea more than the actual book.

Dnf by Kayla Crockett was a fun, unique take that I’d still recommend, even if it had a few flaws.

The story was definitely a bit predictable in places, but I still really enjoyed the ride. My biggest issue was the sentence structure—it felt a little off to me at times, though I will admit it made the 300 pages fly by super fast! Despite the predictability, the concept was fresh and distinct enough to keep me engaged from start to finish.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, easy read with a unique angle to pass the time, I’d say give it a shot!

Hmm….
To start, I could not stand the format this book was written in. 300 pages, you think wow! But I finished it in a day because there are only 9 sentences on a page. I would have probably rated the book a 3 if it weren’t for that. The repetitiveness of words/sentences was annoying. The storyline was cool, I did want to find out the “who dunnit?” The book cover pulled me in, the format, not so much

Very easy read. I read on Kindle and the spacing on each page made this seem more like 150 pages. The plot was good, but I feel like it could have been so much better of a book overall. There could have been less dialogue. More details about the characters and setting. It just felt... Lacking? Like something was missing. I considered DNFing but with as quick of a read as it was, I figured I may as well finish 🤷‍♀️

DNF - As a reader, we all know the meaning of this acronym.

Did Not Finish.

After reading this, I can happily say I did the exact opposite and read it until the very end, up until the last full stop.

This was definitely a different kind of Psychological experience than what I'm used to in thrillers, however as weird as it sounds it feels like a cozy psych thriller? You'll have to read it to understand what I mean.

The story itself was brilliant, it did keep you in suspense however it felt like a YA version of the genre. Our main character Michelle is part of a book club, and DNF'd a book at 61% - she's about to find out the meaning of the importance of reading until the end.

Structurally sound book, had a lovely flow - very short, closed sentences throughout.

4.25 rounded down. Really enjoyed this one! Definitely a little predictable but I’m so glad I read it. Saw the author post in a FB group I’m in and I’m so glad I picked it up. Got me out of my reading slump for sure. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Good read for mystery readers

Saw this on Facebook and was intrigued so I got it and it did not disappoint. Loved reading a book about authors and their readers and how obsessed some people get!

great book!

This book actually really did have my attention and kept it. I finished it in one afternoon. If you’re looking for a suspenseful book that makes you think you have it all figured out, and then you find out you don’t, this is the one!

I found this book enjoyable. It was a fast paced read.
The format of the book at first was not really for me but then I think that added to the pacing.

It was a nice, easy fun read about authors, readers and that dreaded DNFing definitely worth a go.

Amazing concept. Except this feels like a first draft or outline before the details and character development is added in. 300 pages but if the spacing was standard it would be maybe 100. Caught the killer by 10%.

I almost DNF this book. The format was so weird. And why so many M names? I couldn't keep them all straight.

Quick, easy read. Slightly more predictable than my usual thrillers, so I was a tad disappointed. Still a great read, I finished it in a day!

Dnf @23%.
Format is awful, the names are annoying to keep straight with all the M. It's repetitive and I honestly don't care who is "reading the readers" and killing them off.
