Lucky Haven: Dragonfly Creek, Book 2

Rate this book
I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life. Screwed up a career in the military, went to jail. Got some bad tattoos. But coming home to Dragonfly Creek and opening a garage wasn’t one of them, because now I get to watch Haven Bingham go to work at the library across the street every morning. And in the summer, she wears sundresses that would bring me to my knees if she gave me half a chance. Which she wouldn’t…Until she has to.

Until she needs a fake boyfriend—or a bodyguard. Or both.

If you read a Zoe York book you know you are going to have a great time. There will be a fierce, protective man (Cash) and a loving, accepting woman who could save herself thank you, but is happy to have a partner to do it with (Haven). Cash and Haven share the experience of coming back to live in their small town, him after serving time for a crime that was maybe justified (it's never quite clear what it was in the two books so far of this series) but for which Haven's uncle the creepy minister had a part in making sure he was arrested. And her after she was accused of improper behavior by the youth pastor who was grooming her and was rejected, and went away for college and grad school. Oh, and for Cash, "She's always been that girl for me. The one who captures my eye, who holds my attention. Who haunts my dreams, because I'll never be good enough for her."

For Romance Reasons they need to fake date for her protection (?) and reputation (?) but mostly because there was one impulsive kiss they both enjoyed so much it seemed logical. This fake dating includes a lot of public handholding and private dinners and smooching and comfortable evenings reading next to each other and catching feelings. Honestly, hashtag relationship goals from the first minute.

York writes communication and clarity so well. The reader knows Cash has been longing for Haven for years, the reader knows Haven is falling for him, the characters are still saying "Only for the summer" and "This can't be real" but before we get frustrated with the disconnect, guess what? We get a "You are always a big deal to me" and confession of years spent longing. Of course we still get the "I'm not good enough" rejection (and remind us why the small business owner/rancher with a loving family who is an ideal partner is not good enough??) Of course the mystery is rolling along in the background, which leads to both her being able to take care of herself because she is smart and capable AND him being able to do a Big Protect.

Lest one feels nervous about reading small town cowboy thinking it will be conservative-coded, remember this is a York book. These men appreciate their mom's "I choose the bear" t-shirt, and support their bi friends, and casually drop "All cops are bad" and "birth control takes a month to kick in, so your sweet little [feline] remains off limits." It's a pleasure to be able to read small town rancher and not have to elide over probable leanings to enjoy the romance.

I love these books. York writes the formula I talked about at the beginning, but keeps it fresh each time, and it makes for a delightful reading experience.

Thank you to the author for the arc.

Small town romance with a little suspense.

I was lucky to get ARC and ALC from the author and I mostly listened to the audio.

Narrated in duet by June Deborahae and Lance Greenfield, duration: 7,5h
It was my first time with both of these narrators and I enjoyed both. Their performance was very good and fit the characters and their story. I was able to listen with my usual listening speed - 2.0x.

It’s my second read by Zoe but she secured her spot on my auto-tbr authors for me. This was a “simple small town romance” but there was something in the writing and plot execution that kept me hooked the whole time and keep listening.

The prologue was heavy on me, it made me sick and I was scared for what’s about to be revealed later. Thankfully there was nothing “that” heavy but all the church/religion part of the plot was pretty infuriating for me.
As a whole it was an easy and highly enjoyable read, with only the prologue and then the third act situation (let’s call it that) being heavier. There IS a suspense element but I would say the suspense was suspensing mostly at the end, it wasn’t heavy for the whole time.
If you’re not sure if suspense romance is your thing, this book can be a nice intro to this subgenre.

I loved both main characters - Haven and Cash, as well as the found family vibes. Cash was such a green flag it’s unreal.
They kiss in chapter 1 or 2 but then you get more of a slow burn situation.

I love that it was not unnecessary long. It’s full length novel with just the right pace and execution and is around ~300 pages/audio under 8h - BIG YES from me 😉

Works really well as a standalone!!!

Thank you Zoe. Can’t wait for the next one and I will certainly be catching up on Zoe’s other books when I have a space in between ARCs and my physical TBR.

This was a fun and easy audiobook. Definitely knew where the romance story was going. Yet there was enough mystery surrounding the relationship to keep me hooked. There were also enough references to the first and probably the next book to get me looking forward to the other novels. ✨

this is what i get for trying to increase my netgalley feedback ratio.

I have been on a romantic suspense kick as of late and have read quite a few books in the last eight months or so. Some were standouts while some felt quite underwhelming. Lucky haven, unfortunately, falls into the second category. I have several problems with this book. First of all, I don’t think I am the demographic for this story at all. While i know alot of small town romances like this can lack in diversity, this one felt specially sparse in that department. I would definitely get hate-crimed by the townsfolk including the two main characters. The town was actually suffocating which kudos to the author if that’s what she was set out to do. I think it would have been better if the synopsis had a few more trigger warnings like how religious this was/still involved in their religion the two main characters are and the fact that the entire mystery subplot involved a pedophile which was not handled well at all imo.

Moving on to the two main characters, they weren’t very well written. The romance between them was very much insta-lust and they fell in love with in a few weeks. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that they were so uncomfortable with each other within a few days without ever being romantically involved in the past. It felt unrealistic and took me out of the story. I also found the smut to be very cringe.A lot of wattpad jargon such as “seed” and “milking” were used. Also for some reason there was a very vivid description of his dick. I would rather pour bleach on my eyes than read “testicles” whle
the girl is touching his balls during a smut scene. He kept calling her boobs woobly. what was that about? It’s giving “her boobs boobed boobily” and i could not take him seriously. He is a walking red flag and the girl is a doormat. They are indeed made for each other.

In my opinion, the religious trauma I was told of in the beginning wasn’t explored in a meaningful manner. the reveal at the end was actual trauma including. I wish the author handled it better and explored the hardships the main character had to live through. Can I also just say how goofy the epilogue was? like what was that. Another thing I would like to mention is writing is intentional. Sometimes people say things in the heat of the moment that might not be the best thing to say but that thought is banished into the ether and never spoken of again but that is not the case for writing. Everything an author puts into paper is intentional so at the end when the main girl was talking to her niece, the niece says the colour black is yucky and the main character agrees to it its actually not something that should have happened. It might seem like a small moment but it is not message anyone should be putting into the world.

Lucky Haven is a steamy small town romance centering around Haven, the pious Librarian recently returned to town after fleeing the unwanted attention of her church’s youth pastor as a teen, and Cash, an ex-con mechanic who pants after her from afar. When Haven starts receiving some nasty emails, Cash offers to pose as her boyfriend so whoever the mysterious threatener is knows they have him to contend with - enter the fake dating trope.

The book is the second in the Dragonfly Creek series, a series of interconnected standalones centering around the Kincaid brothers.

I applied for this ALC after reading The Ex-Mas breakup by the same author, which I loved as it managed to weave a huge amount of substance into the regular tropey format. I was a bit disappointed that Lucky Haven didn’t deliver on this in the same way. The characters were a lot flatter, and where Ex-mas breakup felt like a romance/MC written by a woman, Lucky Haven felt more male-gazey - something to do with the Virgin trope maybe? It also felt like the characters past life was hinted at, but not fully explained, and I was left with some questions.

Regardless, as a frothy little palate cleanser that brings the heat, I enjoyed it, and will definitely read more from this author. I did love the location everything was set in, having spent some time in Alberta myself.

It was dual PoV/Narration, and I think the narrators June Deborahae and Lance Greenfield depicted the characters very faithfully.

Big thanks to NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my unbiased review.

2.75💫 Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ALC.

I hate to give this such a low rating, but this was so cringey in places. I don't mind virgin FMCs but this was hard to listen to. I really wanted to like this one because the premise sounded like something I would normally enjoy, but the execution just did not work for me.

The characters just felt flat, not really much personality. The narrators just didn't put a lot of emotion into them. I also struggled with the spicy scenes. Some of the scenes were so awkward.

The plot itself didn’t completely work for me, though. The suspense storyline felt a little off and I think some parts could have used more depth. There were several things in both Haven and Cash’s pasts that I would have loved to explore more, and I think that would have made me feel more connected to them and the story.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing the advanced listening copy (ALC) in exchange for my honest review.

It was an enjoyable, exciting, fun small town romance and the story moves at a fast pace with an easy-to-follow plot, and it works perfectly as a standalone read and I really liked the author's writing style.
The story is simple yet packed with suspense and excitement; I’m very eager to meet the rest of the siblings and family members—I think this series is going to be fantastic.

Everything in the book was well-balanced; I loved the character of "Cash" and the way he treated and protected "Haven." I only wish there had been a bit more information or detail regarding the main characters' pasts and their backstories. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

The narration was a duet performance by John Deborahy and Lance Greenfield; both narrators did a wonderful job, delivering outstanding performances that suited the characters perfectly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Well, that was scortching hot! Pretty much any book with an innocent librarian and a bad-boy mechanic bodyguard/fake boyfriend is going to be good when it comes to romance novels. It’s also fun when it’s set in Canada and I get to see/hear words like loonie, toonie, and toque.

Cash and Haven were electric. She turned from her good girl persona really quickly and I was here for it.

I haven’t read the first book in the series, but there were a few unanswered questions that I’m dying to figure out. The ending of Lucky Haven geared us for book 3 in the series so maybe some questions will be answered there.

This was such a fun and easy read. Thank you #netgalley and #victoryediting for the ARC of Lucky Haven. ❤️

First of all, thank you so much for the opportunity from NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ALC, because this book was sweet as heaven. I honestly didn’t expect it to be this sweet, and I ended up completely falling for Chase and Haven and their love story.

Even if the overall story follows a familiar small-town romance formula, I really enjoyed the way their relationship was written. There was something incredibly tender about the way they cared for each other, and I especially loved how Chase gave Haven a safe space to become more confident and explore herself, while Haven gave him the love and care he needed. Their connection felt genuine, and I’ll definitely remember them for how much love they showed each other.

Haven was a character I really liked. I loved seeing her slowly become more confident in herself throughout the story. The changes weren’t always huge or obvious, but there were little moments along the way that showed how much she was growing.

And Chase… well, Chase is Chase. I didn’t feel like he needed much personal growth beyond finally finding someone he could openly give his love to, but I absolutely loved the way he treated Haven. He was protective, affectionate, and completely gone for her, and their sweet and intimate moments were some of my favorite parts of the book.

I also really appreciated how Haven’s first time was handled. It felt thoughtful and respectful, especially considering her past experiences.

As for the audiobook, I adored Haven’s narrator. Her voice felt so natural for the character that I could easily imagine Haven sounding exactly like that if she were real. Chase’s narrator was also fun to listen to, especially during his moments of internal torment and whenever he completely lost his mind over Haven.😂 That said, I think a different narrator might have suited Chase’s character a little better, although overall I still really enjoyed both performances.

The mystery/suspense element was okay for me. It wasn’t particularly complex, but I think it worked well for this kind of romance and never felt like it was trying to overshadow the relationship. One thing I did miss, though, was a stronger sense of the Canadian setting. Despite the story being set in Canada, I often felt like I could have been reading about pretty much any small town in the US.

Because the book is relatively short, some aspects of the story and character development are naturally a little limited. I would have loved to see more of Chase and Haven, especially because I think there was potential for even more emotional development between them.

Still, this was such a sweet, cozy, and enjoyable quick romance. This was my first book by this author, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It’s not a book that necessarily delivers huge, overwhelming emotions, but I think that’s also part of its charm. It’s a light and easy read that puts the characters and their relationship front and center, and I really enjoyed the tenderness between Chase and Haven and the way they loved and supported each other. Sometimes that’s exactly what I want from a romance, and this one left me with a very pleasant experience.

And now I’m definitely curious about the other books in the Dragonfly Creek series! 💕

CW: religious trauma including grooming behavior by youth pastor
On page kidnapping of FMC with physical violence and attempted murder

Very odd choice not to include any content warnings with this book. I even checked the authors website and there weren’t any warnings whatsoever, despite the previous book having detailed content warnings.

Anyway, the first 78% of this book was actually quite enjoyable. A lot of fun, cute, dates and flirting and very consent-forward sexy times.

The rest of the book was suspense/thriller featuring violence against the FMC. So that automatically disqualifies this as a romance book to me.

But now I’m invested so I’ll definitely read the next book. 😆 But I will go in with proper expectations that it won’t be a romance.

And I will say this book was way better than the first in terms of holding my interest. I breezed right through this one. Book 1 was a painful slog. 😴

Whew, this one was a steamy good time with a side of drama and trauma.

This is the second novel in the Dragonfly Creek series, but I had no problems jumping right in. Haven is still haunted by trauma that happened to her by her youth pastor, while Cash is the mechanic who’s been pining for her, never thinking he’s good enough for her. When she needs a bodyguard / fake boyfriend, Cash is more than willing to step in.

So, I didn’t realize we had a backstory of religious trauma, and when I first started, I thought I’d made a mistake. But this all comes full circle with a mostly satisfying conclusion. The real story is Haven blossoming into the woman she never let herself be, with Cash as her guide. And Cash realizing it’s okay to love and be loved in return.

This one had lots of feels, lots of spice, and lots of everything nice!

The audio: June deBorahae and Lance Greenfield did a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. It was easy to follow the dialogue, and the emotions felt very real.

Readers who enjoy a steamy romance with sex lessons, virgin FMC, a green-flag bad boy cowboy, fake dating, and duet narration will eat this up!

I have been dragging my feet on writing this review. Because this series of Zoe York’s is not working for me. AT ALL. And I doubt I can adequately express how disappointing that is because I’ve read all of Zoe York’s books and I usually love them. So to barely be able to get through this Dragonfly Creek series just makes me incredibly…sad.

Previously, this author could be counted on to give a realistic story of a believable couple, dealing with relatable issues. Her stories were heavy on heartfelt moments with just a splash of steamy times. The chemistry was there but not the main event of the story. But with this series, insta-love is the name of the game and we get more about the steam and very little about the heart. It’s like she’s taken her Chloe Maine alter-ego (which are mostly novella-length books that are hot and heavy, short on plot/character development and on the ridiculous side - which is fine if that’s what you’re trying to be, and she says up front that’s what her Chloe Maine pen name is about), and is using that style to write under Zoe York. I am always going to want more depth, more realistic characters and storylines, and more emotional feelings than chemistry ones. I just don’t feel like we’re getting that with this series.

This series is also supposed to lean some into suspense and mystery, but I really think Ms. York should stick with what she does best - which is contemporary romance. The suspense/mystery in this series has come off more as “villain in the corner twisting his handlebar mustache” than actually suspenseful or mysterious.

I also listened to the audiobook, hoping maybe giving voice to the characters would help. But nope, I was so disappointed with the source material the narrators weren’t able to save things for me. They did an okay job, but when you don’t care for the story it’s hard to get into the audiobook.

Sometimes you just need a sexy Canadian small-town romance with a tattooed ex-con mechanic who has a heart of gold and a smart, courageous librarian who finally dares to live her life on her terms.

Oh, and they are both fighting the local puritan bigots and abusers together.

'Lucky Haven' by Zoe York is packed with some of my favourite romance tropes including Fake Dating, 🔥Lessons, Forced Proximity, and He Falls First.

And while it has a light, cosy atmosphere at times, it's also romantic and sexy.
However, it starts with a 'dark-hinting' prologue and that undercurrent runs through the entire story with more concrete reveals as the story progresses. I've listed content guidance below.

This is the 2nd book in Dragonfly Creek series and can absolutely be read as a standalone. However, with glimpses into the other characters of the series, I'll make sure to read the entire series.

Thank you to Zoe York for the ARC.

Lucky Haven is a really great small town romance with characters that you instantly like and connect with. Haven is a librarian who has always believed in Cash Kincaid despite the fact that he’s now an ex-con. She understands how rumors and falsehoods can impact your life so when she needs some help she instinctively knows she can trust Cash. Now Cash is pretending to be her boyfriend and he’s determined to protect her at all costs. Soon these friends turn to lovers and he falls faster than he could have ever anticipated.

This story was so good, but I did find some of what Haven went through difficult at times to get through. I loved the way Cash comes to Haven’s rescue in more ways than one. He absolutely steals your heart! I also loved the friends to lovers aspect, there were so many heartwarming moments that stole my heart. The way Haven was accepted by Cash’s family particularly melted me.

This story was compelling and full of suspense and steamy romance. The audiobook elevated the story even more with narration by Lance Greenfield and June De Borahae. Lance expertly embodied Cash’s protective and loving nature to perfection. He brought so much life and passion to Cash making a swoony MC even swoonier.

June was a perfect Haven. I really felt the range of emotions Haven goes through from sweet and innocent to curious and bold. June brought out all the nuances of Havens journey and you can’t help, but fall in love with the character.

Both narrators were amazing and their chemistry came through loud and clear. They gave wonderful performances and brought this book to life in a really immersive way. This is absolutely a 5 Star listen!

Holyfuckme! Zoe York 😫 This was absolutely incredible!! Haven and Cash are one of the hottest couples I have met and listened to 🥵🤭 Their chemistry is sizzling and the love they feel for each other 😫🥵

This duet is so brilliantly done by June Deborahae and Lance Greenfield 🧎‍♀️ They lived these characters 🥹 They had me giggling, blushing, cackling and smirking through every chapter 🥹 The banter and flirting 😉😏 I cried when they finally got their hea after all that yearning and angst 😫

The spicy scenes had me literally red because they're so intense yet them 🥹 They are perfect for each other 🥹 She's literal sunshine, sass and a strong woman 🥹 He's grumpy yet a secret golden retriever obsessed with his woman 🤭

Thank you so much for this ALC 🥹❤️ I love them!!

This was a cute book that lacked substance. An entertaining read at times, but felt like it lacked the depth that the description of the book promised.

The two main characters had the potential to be interesting, I wanted to dig into their backstories and traumas... We sort of got that, but not really. I wanted details, revelations. Especially with the dual POV style the book was written in... Unfortunately we didn't get that, and it impacted the book further: certain dialogue towards the middle and end did not feel like it matched the characters we had been getting to know.

Thank you @NetGalley and @VictoryEditing for the ALC. Cash is the ultimate protector and he has always had his sights on Haven. Haven was part of her uncle church until a youth pastor made her leave. She comes back to town years later to run the public Library. Cash's car shop is just across the street and he gets to watch Haven everyday. When someone starts leaving nasty emails, Cash steps in to play bodyguard. Haven still feels that pull to Cash, can she resist him? This is book 2 in the series.

The bad boy gets the good girl in this spicy small town romance by Zoe York (who is one of my most read authors, for good reason). This one touches on the predatory behaviour of one of the members of a religious community and how it, and the church, have impacted the heroine. While the trope is clear, the way the author writes her characters makes them believable and not without flaws. There are some suspenseful parts but the romance shines through and the ending is satisfying.

⭐️ 4/5 | 🌶️ 4/5 | 🎧 3.5/5

Lucky Haven was such a good mix of small-town romance, romantic suspense, healing, and spice. What really worked for me was that Haven’s past matters without becoming her entire personality. She is healing and figuring out what she wants, and the book lets her move forward without pretending that what happened to her didn’t affect her.

I especially loved the way the experienced/inexperienced dynamic was handled. Haven may be inexperienced, but she is never passive. She is curious, asks questions, initiates, changes her mind, says what she wants, and actively participates in her own sexual exploration. Cash gives her room to do that without ever making her feel embarrassed or pressured. The sexual safety and openness between them was SO well done.

And listen… Cash’s dirty talk? 10/10. 😂

His protectiveness worked for me for a similar reason. This could have very easily become the kind of romance where “protective” actually means controlling, but Cash consistently encourages Haven to trust herself rather than asking her to replace her judgment with his. He wants to protect her without treating her like she is incapable of protecting herself.

I also really appreciated how the book handled Haven’s religious trauma. Her experience doesn’t turn into a blanket rejection of faith. Instead, she gets to separate what she actually believes from the manipulation, judgment, and expectations that were imposed on her. There was more nuance here than I expected.

The suspense also felt connected to the larger story rather than something thrown in at the end just to create danger. Even when I figured out part of what was happening, there was still enough left in the reveal to surprise me.

🎧 I listened to the ALC narrated in duet by June deBoraha and Lance Greenfield. Duet was absolutely the right choice for this book and made the banter, chemistry, and comedic timing even better. Lance wasn’t quite my ideal voice for Cash, so the individual performance didn’t hit quite as strongly for me as the production format itself.

🧐 For My Fellow Cover Judgers…

The audiobook cover actually gives a better sense of what you’re getting than the softer Kindle cover I saw. There’s plenty of small-town romance here, but this also has real emotional weight, high heat, religious trauma, and a genuine suspense arc.

Content Information

I recommend checking the author’s content notes before starting. The book opens with material involving religious manipulation and attempted grooming of a minor.

The author does provide a content warning, and once I found it, that context helped me understand the opening exactly as intended. I only wish it had been easier to find, because having that framing beforehand would have made a meaningful difference in my initial reading experience.

Overall, this was a really strong 4.5-star experience for me, rounded to 4. It gave me a protective MMC without sacrificing the FMC’s agency, an experienced/inexperienced dynamic that treated curiosity and consent exceptionally well, and a heroine whose healing allowed her to move forward rather than trapping her inside what happened to her.

And yes, I absolutely want more Dragonfly Creek. 😂

Who Should Listen?

Readers who love protective-but-not-controlling MMCs, heroines with genuine sexual agency, high-heat romance with excellent dirty talk, small-town romantic suspense, nuanced healing after religious trauma, and fake dating wrapped around a relationship with real emotional history.

Great Story & Narration🎧Captivating & Heartfelt!

Lucky Haven
Dragonfly Creek, Book 2
By: Zoe York
Narrated by: June DeBorahae, Lance Greenfield

Zoe York welcomes you to Dragonfly Creek with a fabulous small-town romance that grabs your attention right from the start and holds it captive straight to the end. This is the second book of the series, but my first and I had no problem following along and never felt like I was missing something not having read the first book. Actually, the only outcome is being intrigued about the characters and events that occured in first book, and wanting to know more. “Lucky Haven” is Cash Kincaid and Haven Bingham’s story, each have an interesting back story, both were away from Dragonfly Creek, each having different, but unpleasant circumstances, and recently returned to town. Cash spent time serving in the military and then did a stint in jail, returning to town and opened his own business fixing cars, and lives in the apartment above the garage. He always has a thing for Haven before she left town, and was happy to see her return and become the town’s librarian. Good thing he loves to read, it gives him a reason to visit her more often, convenient being he lives across the street of the library. Unfortunately, not everyone was happy to see Haven return to town, she left abruptly and not without controversy thanks to Jeb, the shady and pervy youth pastor in the church, the church where her unsupportive Uncle is the pastor. Then she starts to get threatening emails, at first she blew them off, but when she saw Jeb around she became concerned, sharing that concern with Cash, which brought out his protective side. He came up with a plan, to be her bodyguard, which then turned into a fake romantic relationship. There was an undeniable chemistry between these two, but Haven’s lack of experience makes her insecure, and then an idea sprouts up, he could give her lessons to build up her confidence with men. I enjoyed watching these two get get better acquainted and seeing their relationship morph into something so much more. I loved all the layers of the story and how it all unfolded, with the perfect balance of drama, angst, some twists and thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. The writing, plot, and world-building are fantastic, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. Zoe York, thank you for this wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 June DeBorahae and Lance Greenfield deliver a fabulous performance, bringing the characters to life with voices that are fitting and believable. DeBorahae’s take on Haven was perfection, grasping every facet of her personality, from her strength and determination to her innocence, also showcasing her confidence as Haven grew into her own. Greenfield was just as great in Cash’s role and did the same with showcasing his personality and nailing it all, including his protective side. Both were fantastic performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too. Their expressive delivery conveys all the characters’ emotions, making you feel them all. These two make an ex

Lucky Haven was such a sweet small-town romance for me, with fake dating, second chances and a little bit of suspense. Even though this book is part of a series, I never felt like I was missing any background information. I had no problem getting into the story at all.

Haven returns to her hometown after several years to work there as a librarian. The small town is very conservative and religious, and Haven had some difficult experiences there in the past, which makes coming back anything but easy. Cash, on the other hand, has just returned after spending several years in prison and has built a new life together with his family. He had feelings for Haven even when they were younger, but he always thought he wasn’t good enough for her.

When the youth pastor from Haven’s past shows up again and she starts receiving threats, Cash becomes something like her fake boyfriend and protector. Of course, their fake relationship quickly turns into something more – and I absolutely loved them together. 🤍 I especially loved that Cash only ever had eyes for Haven when he was younger, and that nothing had changed even after all those years.

I also absolutely loved Cash’s family. They slowly become like a family of her own for Haven, which added such a warm and lovely side to the story. At the same time, the threats and secrets surrounding the small town kept things exciting.

Overall, Lucky Haven was a very sweet, emotional and suspenseful small-town romance. Haven and Cash fit together so well, and I really enjoyed their story. 🤍

A Sweet Return to Dragonfly Creek—I Just Wanted More!
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥
Tear Drops:
📚EBOOK📚 & 🎧AUDIO 🎧

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to apply for an ARC/ALC of Lucky Haven, and of course I jumped at the chance because Zoe York is a Canadian author whose romances I really enjoy. 🇨🇦💕 She has a way of writing stories that are easy to fall into without making them unnecessarily long.

Although, funny enough, that's also sometimes my problem with her books—I always want MORE! 😂

Lucky Haven takes us back to Dragonfly Creek and follows Haven and a former military man who's returned home after making more than a few mistakes in his life. He's opened a garage across the street from the library where Haven works, which means he gets to watch his longtime crush walk to work every day. He doesn't think she'd ever give him a chance… until Haven suddenly needs a fake boyfriend, a bodyguard—or maybe a little bit of both. 👀

I really enjoyed the story and the chemistry between these two. There's romance, some spice, a little drama and that protective hero energy that I always enjoy.
But I wanted more depth.

The characters were nicely developed for the length of the book, but I would have loved more backstory, especially about everything that happened before the story begins. There were certain things I wanted to understand better, and I felt like we moved from one point to another pretty quickly. Give me a little more history, a little more drama, a little more time with these characters! 😂

This is technically Dragonfly Creek #2, and I haven't read the first book. You absolutely can understand this story without reading book one, so it works well on its own. However, now I'm curious whether reading the first book would have given me some of the extra background I felt I was missing. I may have to go back and investigate!

The audiobook was also a really enjoyable surprise. June Deborah and Lance Greenfield were both new-to-me narrators, and I thought they did a great job. It's performed in duet narration, which made the story so much more immersive and really brought the chemistry between the characters to life. 🎧❤️

Overall, Lucky Haven was another really enjoyable Zoe York romance. It wasn’t quite a five-star read because I wanted more character depth and backstory, but what we did get was sweet, spicy and entertaining.

📚🎧 The ebook and audiobook are both coming September 1st, and the ebook will be available on Kindle Unlimited!

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. And I’m pretty sure when book three comes along, I’ll be right back in Dragonfly Creek. 😂💕

ARC/ALC received for review. All opinions are my own.

Story 3.5/5
Spice 3/5
Audiobook Narration 4/5

Tropes: Cowboy Romance, Small Town, Good Girl x Bad Boy, Fake Dating, Spicy Lessons, Small Town Bigots, Stalker/Threatening Letters (not the MMC), Friends to Lovers, a Little Bit of Danger

This is the second book in the series, I didn't read the first book and had no problem getting into the story. I liked that the story was set in a fictional small town, but it references locations in the area that I live, so I loved that connection! Unfortunately, the small town in the story being full of "good Christians" who are actually pretty terrible small minded people, is super accurate to rural Alberta. I was actually surprised to learn that the author is not from Alberta because she wrote it really well.
Both of the main characters had been secretly pining for each other since high school, but there is an incident that happens when they are young adults, he is sent to jail, she feels terrible about the whole situation and leaves to go to university. The story takes place 10 years later, he is out of jail and is running the mechanic shop and she has recently moved back to work as a librarian. He goes to the library once a week to exchange books and check out her cleavage... he's a little bit obsessed with her, but in a charming way and he tries to show restraint.
One day when the local youth pastor who may have been attempting to groom her as a teenager is near to show how uninterested in him she is she plants a big kiss on the MMC and that leads to them establishing their fake dating arrangement. This arrangement leads to her confession that she does not have a lot of experience in the spicy department and he offers up his expertise to her.
You know that at some point the dating stops being fake and the feelings become very real. There is a little tension because even though the FMC is very into him, he still worries that because his past he is not good enough for her.
My biggest issue with the plot is I didn't feel like they fully explained the incident that resulted in the MMC going to jail. Though please correct me if I am wrong about this because sometimes I fall asleep when I am listening to audiobooks (I do go back to what I remember listening to before I nodded off... but it is always possible that I fell asleep at some point or zoned out and didn't realize it.) They did explain the incident a little bit, but I wanted all the details.... like spill all the tea!

The audiobook is duet narration, performed by June Deborahae and Lance Greenfield. I can tell that Lance Greenfield is not Canadian because he mispronounced "toque" (its too - que not tow-que). Overall, it was a good listen.

Lucky Haven by Zoe York is the second title in the Dragonfly Creek series and it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
As a steamy, small town, friends to lovers, fake dating romance, the plot and storyline had me hooked from the start especially with the engaging main characters of Cash Kincaid and Haven Bingham.
Cash Kincaid is a bad boy, ex-con and mechanic but has a heart of gold and is fiercely protective of those he cares for and loves and Haven Bingham is one of those people. They went to high school together and with their different upbringings they didn't run in the same circles and were never friends but Cash always had a thing for her. Years later after the army and a stint in prison that should never have occurred, Cash came back to town and opened his garage. Haven, meanwhile, having lost her parents, was brought up by her uncle who was also the pastor of a local church who had some strict beliefs and views of those who weren't part of their religious community. Haven was an intelligent and beautiful girl and unfortunately was the focus of unwanted attention by the youth pastor which didn't end well and as soon as she could she escaped to the city to pursue education at university.
Haven's return to town and new job as a librarian leaves her lonely and somewhat ostracised by her uncle and members of her former church and when she received unwanted attention she recklessly involves Cash in a scheme to help which he gladly goes along with as his desire and attraction to Haven has only increased as the years have passed.

The story was well written and paced and covered a lot in a way that didn't feel too rushed but could have also been easily expanded into a longer story. Cash and Haven had sizzling chemistry and their journey as they explored their mutual attraction, physical desire, developing friendship and growing emotional connection had me turning the pages eagerly.
As we follow Haven growing, gaining confidence and finding her place and peeling away the layers that Cash has, and Cash letting Haven in and allowing himself to love openly and relish being loved in return ensured a warm-hearted read. Along with elements of real found friends and family and parts of a community really pulling together when danger threatens, this book was a pleasure to read especially as Cash and Haven get their satisfying and well deserved HEA.

Thank you to the author for having received a free ARC of this book.

Thank you Audio Arc provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for this ALC copy of Lucky Haven by Zoe York, narrated by June deBorahae and Lance Greenfield. This is book two in the Dragonfly Creek series. This can be read as a standalone, however now I want to go read book one as well. This was my first book by this author (I’m excited to find out she’s Canadian) and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit of a slowburn, mixed in with fake dating of the ex-con mechanic and the virgin good girl librarian with suspense.

These two have know each other a long time. They went to school together. Haven was the pastor’s niece and a girl who never stepped out of line and always did the right thing. Cash has always been a bit of a bad boy, total opposite from Haven.

Cash was in the military and has spent time in jail but now he’s back in his hometown running his own business as a mechanic. Which just happens to be across the street from the library where his favourite (just recently moved back to town) librarian works. He tries hard to only go see her once a week for a book and flirt a little with the woman he can’t stop thinking about. However, he’s all wrong for her and he knows he can’t go there with her. That is until the day she marches over to his place to give him a book he wanted and plants a kiss on him! She needs to send a message to the much older youth pastor at church who tried grooming her as a teenager. Since she’s come back to town, he has made her feel very uncomfortable and most of the town hasn’t been all that friendly either. This was her way of making a statement and Cash is here for it!

These two start off fake dating and he realizes maybe she needs a bodyguard for a while too. She’s been getting emails at work that cause alarm and luckily, she has Cash to help her.

I enjoyed Cash trying to be a gentleman (even though that’s not his reputation, however he really is) and not push Haven into doing anything. However, with her virgin curiosity being willing to ask for what she wants. These two grow in their fake/not so fake relationship and become what each other needs.

🎧 Audiobook Review — Lucky Haven (Dragonfly Creek #2)
Narrated by June deBorahae & Lance Greenfield
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced listener copy

🎙️ Narration
June deBorahae and Lance Greenfield give this story exactly the vibe it needs.
- Her voice nails Haven’s buttoned‑up, church‑raised, “I’m trying so hard to be good” energy while still letting you hear the spark underneath.
- His voice? Pure protective, tattooed‑mechanic swoon. Cash sounds like a man who has been quietly gone for her for years, and the duet style makes their chemistry feel lived‑in and intimate.

If you love duet narration, this one is a win.

⚠️ Content Notes
This book includes a flashback involving the grooming of a teenager by an older adult, and that thread continues throughout Haven’s healing arc. It’s handled with care, but definitely check content warnings before diving in.

💛 My Take
Even though this is Book 2, it reads completely standalone — you can jump right in. What hooked me most was Haven herself. She’s spent her whole life inside a strict religious bubble, taught to be modest, quiet, and absolutely not open about desire. She’s a librarian (which only reinforces that “good girl” image), even though she’s secretly inhaling spicy romance on the side. And in a small town like Dragonfly Creek, that reputation becomes a whole identity she never actually chose.

Watching her break out of that box? Delicious.

Enter Cash: the tattooed mechanic, ex‑con, longtime crush, and the man who steps up without hesitation when she needs a fake boyfriend/bodyguard/soft place to land. He protects her, stands up for her, and never once tries to shove her back into the version of herself the town expects. Their dynamic is tender, respectful, and quietly electric.

Zoe York is quickly becoming one of my go‑to authors she writes romance with depth, but she doesn’t drag the story out. She gets to the emotional point fast, gives you characters who feel real, and wraps it all in that warm small‑town comfort.
