This was like reading a soap opera. Long dialogues and exaggerated gestures bored me to tears.

The Arranged Wife He Loved Too Late, part of the Belated Groveling series, was about 20+-year-old Caroline Vance Verner, an enologist (aka winemaker), and Alexander Verner, the CEO of Verner Industries. (The ages were unknown. The only reason I put anything for the FMC was that she silently referenced her own age as "twenty-something". Even the characters didn't know their own ages.)

Caroline and Alexander had been married for two years, in what began as an arranged marriage. Although she had heard the rumors about Emily Harper, his beautiful chief of staff, she believed Alexander would one day love his wife. Caroline had tried to talk to Alexander about the tabloid gossip and photos of him and Emily, but all she got was his cold words of reprimand and disappointment. Even her mother had coldly told her that she was horribly naive to believe that Alexander had married her for love, or that he could ever love her. Then she overheard him talking with someone on the phone, during which he said, "She's gentle and obedient, knows exactly what this arranged marriage means". So, a few days later, when a fire destroyed the private wine auction gala they were attending, she was forced to watch as Alexander carried his secretary from the fire, leaving her behind, bleeding in the ruins. Although Caroline survived, the woman who had loved Alexander died in that rubble. After being checked out at the hospital and witnessing Alexander standing beside Emily in an exam room, Caroline returned home, called her attorney to draft divorce papers, packed her things, left Alexander a note, took off her wedding ring, and walked away. What Caroline had no way of knowing was that Alexander had mistakenly believed that he was saving his wife. It wasn't until the smoke cleared that he belatedly realized he was holding his assistant instead. When he tried to go back in after Caroline, Emily convinced him she had seen her escape already: "Mrs. Verner already got out! I saw with my own eyes!" He had no clue she was lying. But his real nightmare began when he returned home to find an empty penthouse and his wife's wedding ring. When he found her at her pre-marital apartment, he lost his temper with her, basically calling her a gold digger, "petty and relentless". When he saw her face and realized what he had said, he tried to take it back, only for Caroline to slap him and force him out of her apartment before slamming the door in his face. Before he could do anything else, he got a call to an emergency meeting at work, so he threw the words, "Caroline, just cool down...I have an emergency meeting at the office. I'll come back tomorrow". He had always assumed that Caroline had loved him to the point that she would have endured anything he put her through, never once thinking she would abandon the marriage. Instead, she was thousands of miles away, building a new life...and smiling at another man.

While it was a decent story, it soon became redundant, to the point that it seemed to drag on forever. Like one of those four-five hour movies that, just when the viewer thought the fade-to-black scene was the end, it would pick back up and throw another twist into the mix. This book went through that way too often. It could have (and probably should have) ended six or seven chapters earlier. Instead, the author threw in multiple unnecessary plot twists that detracted from the enjoyment of the book. The book quickly became boring and bogged down.

Were the two main characters well developed? That's debatable. The swift change in direction by the MMC was tantamount to whiplash, and the choices he made after Chapter 24 were highly questionable for someone in his high-ranking position in the business world. As for the FMC, the author never quite explained where she got the talent for the things she did. That appeared to have developed out of the blue and, bam, she was a highly successful businesswoman with a backbone that she lacked for more than 20 years of her life. This storyline was beyond the realm of plausibility without an explanation to prove it could be real. Too much of the story fell into that category, so I could only give it a one-star rating. It needed a great deal of tweaking to be worthy of anything higher.

Writing was overly simple

Characters came across as flat. Situations and dialogue didn’t quite land as authentic.

Overall, the book had no originality.

So you’re telling me that after a terrorist attack he didn’t even check on his wife while he went to the hospital with his secretary. Even if his wife got out ok he should have known she would worry about where he was (unlike him caring about her). And then he never finds out his wife was actually hurt in the attack due to his secretary’s “panic attack”. The plot is unbelievable. Prior to her leaving I don’t actually believe he loved her like he said.

Can men really be as dumb as Alexander? I mean I guess so.

Notes for me

Alexander

Caroline - manages estate’s wine cellar and loves it.

Arranged marriage 2 years ago. She’s hoping it develops into feelings for him like it has her. She’s built her entire life around his schedule, likes etc. He provides financially but is cold.

Her assistant at the wine cellar tells her gossip columns posted pictures of him and his secretary Emily at a private dinner at NY Arts Festival. They are thinking affair because she was whispering in his ear and adjusting his tie.

She decides to talk to him about the rumors. Her mother says not to it’s an arranged marriage only. She hears him on the phone in response to the baseless rumors. Says she’s obedient and won’t cause any issues for him. She knows exactly what this marriage means.

Emily is good about wording “concerns” where it makes Caroline look jealous or petty. Part of Alexander doesn’t want to believe she may be spying for her family or something equally as bad.

Alexander takes Caroline to a vintage wine auction. Asks Emily to order Caroline a custom made navy silk dress. He surprises Caroline and she is so excited. They arrive at the venue and Emily is wearing the exact same color. She plays it off as a coincidence. She can’t change because it would draw even more attention.

There’s an explosion. Alexander thinks he’s carrying Caroline out of the fire because he sees the dress. It’s Emily. He panics and pushes her away wanting to run back in. She clings to him saying she specifically saw Caroline escorted out of the VIP tunnel and taken home. She then fakes a panic attack. Alexander is relieved about Caroline so takes care of Emily.

Caroline makes her way out, is mocked by onlookers because everyone saw Alexander and Emily. It’s common knowledge they are having an affair.

Caroline takes herself to the hospital and sees Alexander talking sweetly to Emily how he’s never talked to her.

She packs a suitcase, leaves her ring and files for
divorce. He is devastated. Grabs a priceless pink necklace he bought her and follows her to her old apartment. His words come out all wrong. His fear comes out as she’s ungrateful for everything he’s done for her family.

Emily calls with a work emergency and he says he will be back after her tantrum. She flies to Rome with her best friend. She sees a social media post Emily made in the back of a car her head on Alexander’s shoulder. That is the end for her.

He has to see Emily for the snake she is and win Caroline back. His POV he met her a couple of months before the arrangement and was excited to marry her. He was afraid to show emotion.

One of my faves.

This is so poorly written that the dialogue sounds like the dubbed audio of a Korean soap opera.

"Fine! You've got guts! We'll see about this."

So much awful dialogue. And the MMC is just so dumb and selfish.

It was alright but it had problems.

Overall the story was someone enjoyable but there were problems with the plot timeline and some details it just didn't make any sense.

Firstly, there's the issue with Caroline having a winery in Tuscany and a fermentation schedule only a week after leaving her husband. There is no mention of her having a winery in Tuscany all that time she was married and if she left and went to see Olivia how did she get a winery where the final fermentation was ready and only a week?

Second, I thought Caroline and Olivia were living at the winery and yet when Alexander is trying to win her over he makes plans to purchase one of three estates nearby. Okay fine, a place of their own. Except at the end of the book when he's standing in the field with the blueprints and talking about planting chamomile and roses and that when they move in she needs to be able to see that immediately as if it's a home but they're talking about all the fermentation equipment and vents and everything as if it's the winery - yes, it can be both but it's not developed well within the plot or explained well enough that it seems like anything other then bulldozing the world and tearing up the countryside (i.e. the fact that they're going to bulldoze and build a place halfway up the mountain so she can look over the valley) but earlier when she had forgiven him and he decided to stay in Tuscany he was already looking that properties nearby to buy an estate and yet the winery expansion building they just finished seem like they're home, so none of it made any sense. It just seemed like rich people grandstanding, showing off their wealth, and the constantly building stuff we're buying estates or whatever was just bragging kind of thrown into the plot. I didn't like it. How about a line saying he discarded the idea of buying one of the three standing estates and they've been looking to build his new construction of their own or there were small living quarters at the winery but they wanted to have a house for children I mean something to develop it for the plot instead of him just constantly throwing money around and building stuff for her.

That brings me to the final point that drove me nuts. The author gooes on and on about the success of the winery being all about her and she did it all on her own and the success is totally due to her but it was all his money, and what about Olivia who stood by her, and gabriel, the investor who was sweet on her just disappeared from the plot? That needed to be resolved not just disappear from the storyline and have Alexander syrup the investing she was able to get because of her success. Basically she didn't really do it all on her own, she had Olivia, she had early help from Gabriel before Alexander stepped up, and in the end her ex threw money at it until she was okay. Her doing it on her own was having that investor take an interest because of her ideas and her knowledge, and for him to just disappear from the plot line and for that success she had on her own before Alexander stepped in hurt that impression of Caroline being a success without her husband's money and influence. Getting the new orders and expanding the reputation of the wine, getting investors outside her husband interested in her (I.e the partnership with Gabriel), rolling her profits back into the business and expanding because her sales had skyrocketed or something is how I would have viewed her as having done this on her own and being a success, not just getting propped up by her ex-husband so he can win her back.

Then the grovel sometimes was too over the top -- about her not lifting anything, and some of the apologies and about not protecting her was sometimes more childish and unrealistic than believable. Overall her just suddenly having a winery and a vintage ready to go a week after leaving your husband was too much obviously the author just didn't put a lot of thought into the plot details and didn't develop the world or the background appropriately. Those holes and inconsistencies really diminished the quality of the story.

Not hiding any spoilers. Terrible writing. It would flunk any creative writing class. DNF because I value my brain cells. Barely a kiss is exchanged; or maybe in the last chapters but I quit before the (official) end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Two years into an arranged marriage with a husband who is polite but cold to her. She's quiet and subservient, as she was raised, hoping he'll love her. Her family expects her to remain nice to him so their important business contracts get renewed. Meanwhile, dear husband is 'close' to his new secretary; rumors are everywhere. Should she tell him how much this bothers her, or just go along? Her mother tells her she didn't think he married her because he loved her. Caroline decides to stand up for herself. She speaks up; he dismisses her concerns. Then he thinks she betrayed him over a business matter. Gaslighting ensues. In TWO YEARS OF MARRIAGE, he has never invited her to any social function. Did he even date her? He barely speaks to her.

I doubt he has ever been in any relationship. "I was arrogant. I thought money and status were everything. I figured you were so strong you didn't need companionship.

Oh my heart! He surprise invites her to a special wine themed event (she's a wine grower). Picked out her gown, jewelry, everything. Surprised he didn't think of picking out her shoes too. She is a HUGE doormat. He is such a dumb cluck. His secretary also shows up wearing a gown very similar to his wife's. (hahaha) Suddenly, there's an explosion! A terrorist attack! He loses Caroline in the smoke but sees a gown he recognizes and rescues her. Oops, it's the secretary, who tells him his wife got out (did she though?).

The writing reads like a bad soap opera script. He is SO STUPID, how can he head a big corporation?

Just lol

I’ve seen this advertised on my social media feed for a while and had to read it. The premise of the book is great but everything else is so sloppy. The timing is weird and jumpy and doesn’t make sense at points. The characters are relatively shallow and it’s hard to feel connected to them. The drama was fairly low bar. It needs a lot of work in my opinion. It reads like someone gave AI a prompt and then ran with it.

Caroline & Alexander’s Marriage was one made because of a contract. Caroline grew to love Alexander & Alexander also did love Caroline but business and an overly ambitious secretary, Emily got in between them in their marriage. When she walks away .. Alexander finally realizes what he has lost and must work to get back. Their love story is one of love found, love lost and love renewed again.

Great Story

I absolutely loved that the author wrote this as a story. So many books read like a report. The author developed the characters of each individual and the conversations were human and normal. The story just flowed.
Lots of manipulation and heartbreak.

Great writing and definitely recommend this book

Appallingly Bad

This ebook is so bad that I started to skip chapters just to finish it.
So many grammatical and spelling errors that it made the story become stilted and jarring. The dialogue was atrocious and became difficult with who was conversing. I definitely won't be reading anything else by this author.

Same storyline as another book by this author. Just different names.
➡️FMC constantly addressing MMC by formal name
➡️ attack in an alley
➡️ FMC with a male friend who has feelings for her and she does not have feelings with him and states “my heart is in other place. “

Time frames don’t make sense. She is in Italy and within a week she has a winery?!?

It was an interesting storyline, and I loved that the main female character grew a backbone and stood up for herself, and became powerful. I like the fact that the male main character realize that he was losing her and he changed his attitude in a big way.

Nice story

This was the typical story line but I like those kind. There was an open door scene but since I don't care for those, I just passed it up. Other than that, good read.

I enjoyed this book a great deal, it was predictable.
Her husband went way beyond fighting for they're love, only to realize they loved this new life.
