Roxy Desjardins— No, let’s call her Rainey, because that’s what she calls herself when she meets Callum Frazier. He saves her from a vicious dog after she was involved in a brawl in a nightclub and was abandoned by all her friends so that she had to run barefoot and almost naked down his street— Who knows if any of that is true? One thing is, for Callum is a football player (a big, strong one) and he’s going to Michigan to try out for the Woodsmen team. And somehow (for the first time), life works out for Rainey and she gets to tag along with him. She plans to spend most of her time doing everything in her power to make sure that Callum is a success, by helping him in every way that she can. If that means becoming a social media star? Done. Getting a job? Sure. Listening to his problems, offering advice, cheering him on? If that’s what he needs, she’s there for it! And if he wants more… Well, Callum doesn’t want anything like that, and Rainey isn’t going to mess up the best thing that ever happened to her by pushing for feelings that just aren’t there. She’s not a woman who ever planned before, but neither of them could have planned for the twists that their lives take together, leading them to a ending full of happiness and (of course!) love.
Really good? Only one spicy scene at the very end. Slow-burn in all the right ways. Character driven with a great plot. One of my favourite authors, an automatic read
Didn’t know much going into it but I’m glad I gave it a chance.

If I had to describe this book with one word I would go with solid. Everything that came out of it really sticks to your bones. There were times in which I didn’t really know where it was going but I felt like I was down for the ride no matter what turn it was going to take. Both MCs had a solid growth arc together and separately. This book is so dang closed doors and vanilla I feel like the last scene didn’t need to happen. I mean went all the way to the end not doing anything. Was it meant to be a reward? Didn’t feel like it to me.
It's a bit of a formula with JB and her woman lead characters but I really like a character who has struggles yet is a good person. I like how she not only saves herself but the male character as well. My only criticism is that the romance seems unnaturally overdue. While waiting for a mature relationship is best before intimacy this story stretched belief.
I'm going to say that Maverick brought up memories of stuff my last dogs have chewed or ran away from us turning up in the middle of the night barking on the front porch(like he lost his key). 😆
I made myself finish reading this story as I'm not into multiple sex partners. Rainey being a sex worker was a big turn off. I couldn't tell if she was raped as a child or if she just decided to go that path after getting to LA. Then she does a 360, becoming the modest perfect girlfriend. It made no sense to me. Callum was another unbelievable character; he starts out as a mean angry rebel in his younger years but somehow turns into a chased saint. The story bored me and I didn't find any of it believable. Best character was Anara, loved her!
I love revisiting the Woodsmen, it feels like catching up with old friends. This story takes an unlikely couple from difficult circumstances to a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended, but if you haven't already read the previous Woodsmen stories I would say go back and catch up with those first.
Jamie Bennett always writes the best slow burn romance. I couldn't put this one down. I can't wait for her next book. If your haven't read her books I highly recommend all of them.
