Under their guidance, Dallas learns everything there is to know about hunting monsters (or close enough) and pledges to keep his friends safe.

Now there’s a werewolf in town, and Dallas and Stanley are on the case. As far as Dallas is concerned, monsters are monsters, and they have no place in Wisconsin.

Or do they? When an unexpected discovery and an unlikely reunion turn his world upside down, Dallas realizes he may not get to choose which side he’s on.

Booze, bar fights, boo hags, beer cans, Bigfoot, brujas, and a full moon. Who knew that hunting monsters would make life so exciting?

People say you should write what you know. That’s damn good advice, so Scott writes about ordinary Midwesterners making an extraordinary mess of things. Hey, if the flannel fits…

Oh- one more thing: According to Scott, ‘ordinary’ totally includes vampires, werewolves, zombies, shapeshifters, aliens, and more. Heck, it is the Midwest, after all.

Who knew that there were so many diverse creatures in the wilds of the upper midwest? Every time I turn a page, I am finding another unnatural being coming out of the woodwork, tent or woods. This book is a hoot. I am laughing, I am not scared, even though I am a bit of a book coward. Never could I believe such a creature exists known as a Comedy Horror. It is keeping me up reading and laughing at the sheer oddity of the story. Let me see if I can keep it straight, we have vampires, werewolves, possible sasquatch sightings, rumored witches, dark woods, burning candles, boo hags, and a guilty friend. I think that rounds out the atmosphere pretty well.

I love this story. It is really hilarious. I can see why it was part of #ComedyBookWeek now. I am now all current with the terminology of the monster lingo, I know about silver bullets, wooden stakes and we will not even talk about the tin can. I will leave that up to you to discover.
The writing is great, fast paced and clever words make it an even more entertaining read. It is a laugh a minute, and it has enough red stuff dripping off the walls for even the die hard horror lover. All in all a well-rounded book.

Dallas might not be the sharpest tool in the box, but he sure knows he is a hero – after all, he destroyed a real Vampire. Which makes it annoying that his home-town is not giving him the respect that he deserves. In fact, they are treating him as though he has a drinking problem – so what if he has to throw back a few beers to get killing his best friend out of his head?

Luckily he is recognised as a hero by a real group of monster hunters and he gets to line up against any monsters that the Upper Midwest can throw at them. And, yes, it turns out to be a werewolf…

Dallas is assisted in his heroic misadventures by the guileless Stanley, just one of the many misfits that populate this epic story of the good, the bad and the really stupid. From a waitress with a Background to a sasquatch with a Problem, any book that features a can of beer as a lead character is definitely not going to be boring.

In this, the second in the ‘Monsters in the Midwest’ series, Burtness has been able to have fun with his town of Trappersville. Having created the backdrop and scenery in the first book, ‘Wisconsin Vamp’, he is free to create a character-driven romp that is both hilarious and unique, a story that can only be written by a writer with a keen eye for human foibles and the ability to translate them meaningfully onto the written page. Because of the latter, you should not expect merely a comedic look through the eyes of rural Wisconsin, but an astute description of what makes us human and what makes us humane.

Ok, so a witch, werewolf, Sasquatch and an alien abductee walk into a bowling alley together. Welcome to Trappersville, Wisconsin. Northwoods Wolfman picks right up where Wisconsin Vamp left off, (so if you haven’t read Wisconsin Vamp - STOP NOW! Go and get yourself a copy of Wisconsin Vamp, discover the comic genius that is Scott Burtness, then return here). Dallas is the newly crowned “Hero of Trappersville” and revelling in every moment, until a new threat arrives in town.

Northwoods Wolfman is a marvelous addition to the Monsters in the Midwest series. The vector of the “infection” is as well thought-out and creative as it was in Wisconsin Vamp. By the time the series is over, the citizens of Trappersville will have to tar and feather Jerry. And this is just the beginning of the well developed and intricate comedy that we find throughout Northwoods Wolfman.

Scott Burtness has done a fantastic job with the characters in the story. He successfully turns the villain from book one into the hero of book two. He develops Dallas from the character that, I for one, hated after he murdered the lovable Vampire Herb. By the end of Northwoods Wolfman, Dallas is someone that I want to see win. He has become a selfless, yet simple man who only wants to do the right thing.

If you are in the mood for a cerebral comedy, with a great cast of characters then you will need to schedule a trip to Trappersville, Wisconsin.

I discovered Scott Burtness online and downloaded both Wisconsin Vamp and Northwoods Wolfman. And I'm truly glad I did. The books are hilarious, the characters zany but extremely likeable and the story is well plotted and executed. Burtness has a gift for making even the most mundane aspects of midwestern life hilariously funny. Add to the mix monsters, monster hunters and some misplaced enthusiasm on the part of the protagonist, and you have a seriously funny book on your hands. Wolfman takes a light-hearted approach to the world of ghosts, demons, vampires and werewolves. Think Teenwolf and Ghostbusters, rather than Twilight. You'll be pulled into Dallas's world of beer, bowling, pick-up trucks, more beer, monster hunting and more beer, from the first page. The laughs, monsters (and beers) just keep coming! Recommended read. Get it today!

I'm really enjoying the Monsters in the Midwest series and Northwoods Wolfman is a worthy successor to Wisconsin Vamp. Trappersville, WI is once again set upon with monsters but it's not just vampires this time. No, werewolves, witches and sasquatches roam the hapless town as a group of monster hunters make an appearance to recruit the Hero of Trappersville, Dallas himself. Readers are once again treated to the engaging mixture of comedy and horror that Scott Burtness brandishes so well. Dallas, Stanley and Lois come across as folks you know and care about. It would be really great if traveling salesman Jerry would stop inflicting so much terror in their lives but then, if he did, we wouldn't get Monsters in the Midwest. Looking forward to the third book.

I received this book through a Goodreads Giveaway.

I didn't read the first book in this series but I don't think it was necessary, though I'm sure I would have enjoyed the first book as well.

I thought this book would be a bit more silly and laugh out loud - this was different, but not in a bad way. While there was silliness and jokes there was an undercurrent of pain and sadness. The majority of the characters are going through or are survivors of trauma. I thought that this was taken with enough seriousness to know the author wasn't making light of such things but also balanced with enough humor so that the story wasn't just never ending terrible and sad things happening to people who were just trying to get by. The world in this story was very complex and detailed - definitely a place I'd like to visit again.

I found the ending unexpected - but in a good way. It was a bit risky to resolve it that way but it was better than where I thought the story might be going.

Book Two of the Monsters in the Midwest Series

Scott Burtness has done it again! Words cannot express how awesome his first book is and after taking a few weeks to recover from the slap of awesome that was Wisconsin Vamp (Book One of the Monsters in the Midwest Series) I finally dived into Northwoods Wolfman and you know what – I was not disappointed. In fact; if possible; this book is even better than the first! Maybe it’s because I get to continue to live out my adventures in the sleepy town of Trappersville; maybe it’s because I missed the bowling alley and Stanley’s ramblings about Murder; she wrote… All I know is that it felt good to be back in town with even greater adventures. Burtness is an excellent writer who knows how to build up a story and how to make a reader feel like they are a part of a world rather than reading about it.
The thing I love most about Burtness’ writing is it’s not really simple but it’s certainly not verbose. It’s a medium; a normal kind of ‘hey buddy have I got a story for you‘ type of narrative. I can imagine sitting around a fire; drinking some beers and Burtness telling me this story. This makes it pleasant for many reasons but my main ones were: (1) it makes the story sound kind of plausible; (2) the story doesn’t drag out and you wish to GOD that over descriptive writers would just get to the point and (3) it fit our (not so) average characters rather well. Another thing that I enjoy about Burtness’ writing is that his characters are real! I mean I have a Dallas in my neighbourhood – hell I have a Stanley and Herb as well – so for me when I read these books I feel like I can relate (Herb man… you and I are kindred spirits!). Burtness also introduces some more background for our town and even more interesting characters while our usual trio of trouble progress themselves at a believable pace! There is nothing I don’t love about Trappersville; Herb; Stanley; Louis or Dallas – okay maybe there is something I DON’T love about Dallas but that would be spoiling the first book!
If you are looking for a funny; tongue-in-cheek kind of book that will have you giggling; cheering and wanting to drink beer and bowl then I recommend you look no further. Start with Wisconsin Vamp (You can thank me later) and once you recover from that slap of awesome at the end plough into Northwoods Wolfman.

I’m a fan of the author and eagerly awaited this second book in the series – I wasn’t disappointed! While you can read this book as a stand-alone novel, I’d encourage readers to read the 1st book in the series, Wisconsin Vamp.
First and foremost, potential readers should know is that this is a humorous take on the vampire-werewolf-witch stories. If you don’t enjoy tongue-in-cheek paranormal stories, then this book isn’t for you. However, if you have a sense of humor about the paranormal then get ready for funny (and occasionally gory) romp in the woods with Dallas, Lois and Stanley.
Dallas, the main character, is the Hero of Trappersville after he staked a vampire (Wisconsin Vamp) and ‘saved the town’ from a vampire outbreak. He might have remained a hero if it weren’t for a pesky tick that happened to bite a werewolf, and then bit him. His loyal friend Stanley apparently tumbled to the fact that he was a werewolf, but it took a while for him to figure it out. By the time he did it was a little late. He had joined a Society of paranormal creature hunters, and as you may imagine the tables were turned on him.
The story takes on a peculiar and hilarious turn when the girlfriend of the ‘dead’ vampire, Lois, becomes a witch. I don’t want to spoil the story, but you should know it has to do with using a beer can in a totally new way. This part of the story had me choking on my morning coffee, laughing out loud!
If you enjoy books by Charlaine Harris and Janet Evanovich, this paranormal series may tickle your funny bone. I can’t wait to see if there is a book 3, and what insect may be at the bottom of THAT story!

Intelligent humor, my favorite kind.

** I read this story with my Kindle Unlimited subscription**

If you appreciate intelligent humor, like I do, you’ll have a field day (pun intended) with Northwoods Wolfman. And the best part is that, although it’s the second book in a series with recurrent characters from book one, it’s possible to read it as a standalone. I haven’t read Wisconsin Vamp yet, but after today, I’ll definitely give it a go. First, because I found out I love the author’s sense of humor and secondly, because it’ll help me enjoy some characters for a longer while.
This is the first book by Scott Burness that I read and it surely won’t be the last. He did a great job of fleshing out the characters, both main and secondary ones. He’s ability with character development is also awesome. Dallas, for example, is so realistic you can’t help but sympathize. In some cases, as was mine, the reader will think Burness is describing him or her instead of a fictional character. The plot and storylines are engaging and the humor timing is spot-on. Bottom line here is – what’s there not to like?
I recommend this book to all readers looking for a new talented author who knows how to write smart, funny, and unforgettable stories. I mean, the guy finishes the book with a hilarious “The end…?”. Book 3 can’t come fast enough.

I saw the cover for Northwoods Wolfman by Scott Burtness and thought, huh, this might be interesting. I knew it would be different and I was looking for a fun and easy reading story to keep me entertained for a little while.

What happens to a tick when it feeds off a werewolf? Hmmm. A humorous and horrible thought. I mean, THINK about it.

I do want to warn you about something. If you are ever in Trappersville, WI, I would highly recommend staying away from the state park. It could be very hazardous to your health.

I did not read the first novel, but it wasn’t necessary. I didn’t feel like anything was missing, but I would like to catch up with Wisconsin Vamp.

Each character is a total individual, unique and lovable, contributing to this unique and fun read. Dallas does things believing they are right, only to figure out he could have handled things differently, saving himself a lot of anguish. Love makes strange bedfellows with Lois and Herb and the most loyal, faithful, truest friend Dallas could ever have is Stanley. He overcomes his fears for his friend.

I sure was feeling bad for the poor werewolf when the story was done.

I received a copy of Northwoods Wolfman in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Oh! I just loved this story!

I have been waiting for this book and the day it came out I got it and started reading it the next day. I think this book was as good as the first one. I did find days few small typos where a word was left out but besides that it was well written and very exciting the whole way thru it. I loved the humor and how I really felt I knew all the players here in the book. It was so well written that you really feel like your right there withstand have known them. I think one reason I liked both this and the first book was the humor. A really fun enjoyable read. I'd say more than worth the price and now I can't wait for the next book... there will be more right Scott? I hope so because I am a big fan and will be waiting for more story's about Taylorsville, Herb and the gang and of course poor Dallas lol never thought I'd say that! But he has kind of grown on me. Ok this is funny ....as I was typing .the words kind of grown on me, I mis-typed kind of and it auto corrected the sentence to .... he killed a dog ! Hahaha isn't that funny? ( you have to read the book to understand that)

Loved this hilarious book. I really liked the snarky nature of it and the depth of the humour. I think the detail and time put in to making sure that the story and the attitude of the main character fit into this snarky atmosphere really brought the story up a notch.

I liked the detail put into the world as well. I felt it really ensured that the story had depth and character, rather than ending up being a single layer on humour and nothing more. Instead, we are given layers of humour, snark, life and adventure.

I found the main character brilliant. It was fun to get to know all of the lot, but the main character really stood out with the level of attitude and life given him.

Overall, I found this a very well written, fun and adventurous read. I look forward to seeing more from this author and recommend this book to those who enjoy a paranormal read with a good laugh and a side of snark.

I wanted to read a light and funny story, the plot and the cover of this book seemed the right choice. And I was right. This book is hilarious, fun but non-trivial with the really whimsical and fun characters
Dallas is living his moment of glory, is the hero of Trappersville for killing a vampire. It is proposed to him to adhere to a special company for hunting monsters. This time he must save the city from a werewolf.
Despite being the second book of the series can be read as a standalone, I had no problems.
This is fast-paced, witty and fantastically fun romance, there is humor, hunting monsters, a lot of fun twists. There are scenes in which it is impossible not to laugh out loud. How can you not love a book with witches, werewolves, vampires, and so clever humor?
If you are looking for a cute and funny book then you need to read this one.

What do a werewolf, a witch, a former alien abductee, three hardcore monster hunters, a teenage pacifist Sasquatch, and a vampire reincarnated in a beer can all have in common? They're all main characters in this hilarious book!

NORTHWOODS WOLFMAN is an engaging, hilarious, and satisfying sequel to WISCONSIN VAMP that brings back some of the characters from the first book and introduces several scary-hilarious new ones. There's fighting, humor, paranormal shenanigannery, and a dash of romance. This was a super fun read, and I laughed aloud several times!

I can't wait for the next book. I hope Stanley has a bigger role in it!

Opening this book was like opening Pandora's Box, but instead of containing Evil, it contains a humorous read.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed Northwoods Wolfman, excellent written with witty dialogues, fun situations, a non conventional hero and a great amount of delightful characters, embarks you in a delicious reading.
I feel really impressed by this Author, this is the type of "smart" reading that's hard to find.
As usual, I go against the world and read book two first, but don't worry! I already downloaded my copy of Book 1.
Highly recommended!!!

This was a treat, a somewhat bloody one, but a treat none the less.  Fans of S.G. Browne and Andrew Buckley will have found the perfect medium in Scott Burtness.  A decidedly twisted take on the kids go in the woods not to be heard from again trope, their is much mystery and horror to be had on this journey through the Northwoods.  A blend of humor and gore, laughter and cringe worthy attacks on some jaded youths traipsing through unknown territories, Northwoods Wolfman keeps you entertained throughout.  Not recommended for those with an aversion to stinky, hairy beasts and their eating of humans.

My thanks to the author and tour host for the review opportunity!

Humor meets monsters in northern Wisconsin. Dallasis the self-proclaimed hero of Trapperville for killing a vampire. Now he's trying to drink the memory of killing his best friend away when he's approached by an ancient society of monster hunters. He's happy to join, the only good monster is a dead monster right? Can Dallas do what's needed?
This is a fun filled romp with all types of monsters and I really enjoyed it.

I have to say right off, this is my favorite story, so far, in the series.  Though Dallas came off as a real douchebag in Wisconsin Vamp, he somewhat redeems himself in this story.  In the first book, we saw Dallas through Herb's eyes, which were tainted with his jealousy and just lack-luster personality.

Now, we get to see Dallas for who he really is.  Which is still the self-centered person he was, but he's full of guilt over killing his best friend, Herb.  I always thought Dallas used Herb to make himself look better, but I see that Dallas really did have feelings, other than for himself.

I like the fact that each infection starts with Jerry, the local salesman who travels all over the country and brings the monsters back with him.  If he only knew. The author is very clever in how these events happen.  Not believable, but definitely unique.

There were some very humorous parts where I split a gut.  Like the episode with Stanley and Bigfoot.  Too funny.  Talking about Stanley, he somewhat comes into his own in this book too.  His obsession with documentaries and certain TV shows, makes him the perfect sidekick for Dallas.  And he's the only one that sees what happened to Dallas.

Needless to say, I really enjoyed this story.  It was full of action, fast paced, some funny encounters, new romances, and nice surprises.  Like Herb-in-a-can.  I highly recommend the book and give it 5-stars.

Kindle Unlimited but got 2 of the 3 on freebie days and just went ahead and bought the other one. This one was a bit confusing, the way it went back and forth, sorta in the timeline.

I didn’t realize when I first started this book that it’s a sequel, so that influenced my opinions of this book. While I still was able to enjoy the book, I think I would have gotten more out of it had I read book 1, Wisconsin Vamp first, so I would recommend reading that book before reading Northwoods Wolfman.

The best part of this book was Scott’s writing, especially his sense of humor. I couldn’t stop laughing throughout the book. Even when I didn’t always understand what was happening (which probably wouldn’t have happened as much if I’d read book 1), I wanted to keep reading to see what zany thing would happen or what piece of pure comedic gold would come out of a character’s mouth next.

The characters, while a bit confusing and odd at times, were absolute gems and fun to read about. I can’t even pick a favorite because I liked all the characters. I didn’t even really dislike any of them, a rarity in a book with a good number of characters.

All in all, this is an absolutely fun read, and I will definitely not only go back and read book 1, but am not eagerly looking forward to reading more books in this series as this a fun, monster-filled romp.

Dermacentor variabilis damn you! Just when Dallas was on top of the world you had to enter his life. You changed him physically and emotionally. You gave him strength, you gave him speed and you gave him hunger. But you broke his heart in the end. Dallas is not all that of a bad guy and has lost his best friend. Lost him in a way he will later realize was a mistake. The girl he wanted hates him. But his buddy Stanley is still there for him. The stuttering one, the nerd that we all love in our group. A whole new world opens to Dallas and for once his eyes are wide open. Only the timing is just unfair in his life. Somethings come to light that he should have known. Others are new and exciting. Love enters and love leaves and we have to find out if time heals a broken heart. We have a Herb in a Can. We have old school movies such as Porkys and Ernest which are classics. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll want to keep on reading through dinner and stay up late to finish. We know what happened to his buddy Herb in Book 1 and now we know what happened to Dallas in Book 2. Is enough really enough? Or is there more?

Northwoods Wolfman is a howling good time that builds on the quirky charm of Wisconsin Vamp. This second installment in the Monsters in the Midwest series shifts gears from vampires to werewolves, but keeps the humor flowing.

Our lovable loser Herb is back, this time trading his fangs for fur as he tackles a werewolf problem in northern Minnesota. Burtness nails the Northwoods vibe, mixing local color with supernatural shenanigans.

The plot's a bit more cohesive than the first book, with some genuinely tense moments mixed in with the laughs. Herb's character growth is a highlight, showing he's learned a thing or two since his vampire days.

While some jokes fall flat, the overall tone is light and fun. A few new characters add depth to the world, though some feel a tad underdeveloped.

Northwoods Wolfman is a solid sequel that expands the Monsters in the Midwest universe. It's not high literature, but it's a perfect read for anyone looking for a chuckle-filled monster romp with a hefty dose of Midwestern charm.

My Favorite So Far

What an entertaining tale. Not only was it fun to revisit the characters, getting to know them better, but also it was a well developed story. I enjoyed book 1 and look forward to book 3, but this is my favorite so far.

Dallas wasn't particularly likable in book 1, but he redeemed himself. I think the difference is that you get to see through his POV, which gives you better insight into who he is. The monster he becomes seems fitting.

There are still a few plot holes, but Scott Burtness spins quite a yarn. I love his metaphors, and his writing is engaging. It's just just fun to read - definitely recommend it!!!!

A humorous horror story.

Rural Wisconsin has more than her fair share of monsters. Dallas, suffering from killing Herb, is shocked when he is recruited by an ancient monster-killing society, and discovers the different varieties of monsters in his town and area. A werewolf is in his town, and he goes hunting for it. I like the air and physical humors. The story has action, romance and even saddnes. The book does have an end, but it leaves a story line hanging. The third book will be about a new monster.

Too little too late?
No. Too much too early.

I really enjoyed the first book, Wisconsin vampire.
What would you do if you woke up as a vampire?
Mr Burtness had thought it through.
In this sequel, we learn what it would be like to become a werewolf. I wish he had just told us that.
But instead, there is suddenly every paranormal being anyone had ever thought of. Which means we don't get any details to speak of.
Too bad. I like details.
The tale is still enjoyable.
I recommend it as light reading.

Northwoods Wolfman A Fully Immersive story

The best books are the ones that make you feel like you're on another planet. Even though Northwoods Wolfman takes place in Wisconsin, the feeling of travelling to another dimension is there in the reading experience. If there was anything wrong with this book, I missed it. I easily found myself rooting for the story's protagonist, Dallas. Highly recommended.

Scott Burtness delivers another adrenaline-pumping adventure with 'Northwoods Wolfman.' Ray Lesniewski's narration adds depth to each character, especially Dallas, whose journey from reluctant hero to monster hunter is as captivating as it is humorous. Burtness's writing is as sharp as Aletia's silver bullets, making this Midwest monster hunt a howling good time.

The evolution of Dallas was well written. He was a shallow character in the first book. Burtness demonstrated Dallas' multi faceted personality with his grief over Herb, his need to feed his ego, and his compassion for his kind.

Fun and amusing, but I liked the first one about the vampire better. On to the third in the series...
