Роман базируется на реальных исторических персонажах, но наличие гномов и духа Агнессы в финале - это не столько пограничные состояния психики Маргариты, сколько желание придать роману черты мифа, легенды. Достоверно неизвестно, обладала ли историческая Маргарита уродливой внешностью, но сам Фейхвангер основывался на портрете работы Квентина Массейса, который не является ее портретом. Массейс изобразил старуху, обликом напоминающую гоблинов, такими, как их изображают современные иллюстраторы.
История противостояния двух женщин, двух соперниц, как на любовном, так и на политическом фронтах кончается поражением для обеих. Маргарита с возрастом осознает, что внешнее безобразие является для нее преимуществом, благодаря которому она может сохранять трезвость ума и сдержанность чувств. Фейхтвангер верно заметил склонность людей приписывать доброту, благородство и прочие положительные качества красивым людям, а людям, обладающим некрасивой внешностью, а тем более особенные черты, такие, как выпяченная губа, как у Маргариты, зло, пороки, сверхъестественные способности причинять вред. Тут вспоминаются слова Льва Толстого: "Удивительное дело, какая полная бывает иллюзия того, что красота есть добро".
Маргарита, несмотря на свои заслуги по сохранению независимости Тироля, стремительному экономическому росту городов и селений, получила уничижительное прозвище Маульташ (Губастая) - это тоже черта толпы не только судить по внешности, но и подвергать гонениям, осмеянию, приклеивать обидные прозвища.

Set in the 14th century, this book tells the story of Tyrol, the ‘land in the mountains’, through the eyes of its last countess, Margarete from the house of the Meinhardiner, before Tyrol becomes part of Austria. She is incredibly ugly and they call her ‘Margarete Maultasch (bag mouth)’. Everything she touches goes to pieces although she tries very hard to be a good person and ruler. The story is told in a very vivid manner and most of the protagonists actually existed. The labyrinthine politics of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation in the late Middle Ages, especially the power struggle between the Habsburgs, Wittelsbachs, und Luxemburgs, is very well realised. Lion Feuchtwanger is a masterful storyteller - a shame that he is almost forgotten now, at least outside the German-speaking world.

Lo scrittore tedesco Lion Feuchtwanger [1884-1958] è noto soprattutto per la trilogia che ha come protagonista il personaggio storico dell’ebreo Giuseppe Flavio, ambientata ai tempi del lungo assedio portato dai legionari di Tito contro la Gerusalemme degli zeloti nell’anno 70 dopo Cristo, ma anche il romanzo che ho appena terminato è un’ottima lettura: ambientato nel XIV secolo tra Tirolo, Baviera, Italia settentrionale e Sacro Romano Impero, ha come protagonista la duchessa Margherita del Tirolo, tanto intelligente quanto brutta, giovane donna corteggiata da chi pensa ai castelli, ai paesi operosi, alle miniere che può portare in dote nel contratto di matrimonio più che a lei, troppo spesso fatta segno di smorfie inorridite e malevoli commenti appena sussurrati alle sue spalle. E così la duchessa cresce e matura provando in tutti i modi a nascondere la sua bruttezza e sviluppando interesse verso l’arte di governo in cui si dimostra attenta, astuta e sollecita. In un mondo comandato dagli uomini, dalle armi e dalle congiure, la duchessa Margherita troverà molti ostacoli nel suo cammino, dovrà fare i conti con pericolose lusinghe e false amicizia, nemici dichiarati o nascosti nell’ombra, ma non si tirerà mai indietro in un crescendo di forti tensioni e rischi per la sua stessa persona. Un romanzo che si fa leggere con interesse e partecipazione e che spinge il lettore alla benevolenza e comprensione nei confronti della singolare protagonista.

Dutch translation of "Die hässliche Herzogin" ("The Ugly Duchess" in English)

This book was SO promising! It had everything one would need for an awesome historical novel; it plays in the 14th century, in countries about which there are not too many novels, and has some amazing characters about, to my knowledge, there are no or almost no other novels. Duchess Margarete of Tyrol is an amazing subject for a book; she inherited her fathers land and ruled over them, was respected depsite her apparently bad looks, got divorced against the popes will and was in the middle of big political drama over several lands (of which a map would have been much appreciated). There are also several other intersting characters, most with fun quirks. How adorable is her grown son Meinhard with his pet dormouse, for instance? The description of Frauenberg is also nicely done.
So just 1 star? Yes. I expected this to be 4, but it quickly dropped to 3, 2, then 1. My problem as that I felt we never really got to know the characters, and never really got a feeling of being in the place where they were. It all felt really flat to me. It started off well enough with the part about Margarete's father, whom we got to know a little, but quickly goes downhill with sentence upon sentence about politics, names, lands... all very confusing and, pardon me for repeating, flat. I also had the idea that a lot of commas must have turned into dots in the dutch translation (though I can't check or prove this suspicion) - Germans love long sentences with loads of commas, but there were none to be found here. The sentences often just did not flow, and often seemed like half sentences. It just went boom boom boom fact fact fact.
The last part of the book does deserve 2 stars perhaps as it has a lot of Meinhard and the despicable Frauenberg, but it seriously lacks our subject Margarete. I so wanted to get to know her, but I never did. It would appear to me she deserves better.
I feel weird for taking down a classic like this, but I really did not enjoy this read.
p.s. I'm sorry, I have to add in one more complaint; I think it is normal for historical novels if the characters believe in fairies and witches and the like as that's what people did. And if the novel has witches in it, they're bound to see spirits, I get that, the story calls for it. But in this most serious of novels, all about politics, the main character does not only believe in gnomes.... she also sees and hears them! What is that all about?! It really does not fit in!

A quite disappointing book since it was supposed to be an historical novel (and not a biography7history) but the author doesn't manage to get readers involved int the narrative.

First Feuchtwanger, didn't really know what to expect. But I'm delighted.
An intimate character study, a detailed exploration of medieval Tyrol, the geopolitics of the Holy Roman Empire (the triangle of Luxemburg, Wittelsbach, Habsburg), and the class dynamics and transformative dynamism of the late Middle Ages. All broken down to the contingency of individual choices and characters. Finally, a meta-study on surface and depth, beauty and ugliness in human society. Great book.
(spoiler: Habsburg always wins in the end. nothing you can do about it.)

A story of Middle Age duchess Margarete Maultasch (i.e. "thick-lipped" (German)).Great picture of a feudal division and twists and turns and ups and downs of Bavarian, Tyrol and Luxemburg princedoms and their struggle for the priority and power in Western Europe. Ugly duchess Margarete of Tyrol played a significant role in politics and economy of Tyrol and Bavaria - she managed to shift the priority from knight "tournier" to the trade and town empowering.
Really great reading though one can see that the book is written with the 20-th century perspectives as of economy and and trade and production.

Люблю исторические романы, но этот вышел явно неудачным. Бесконечные описания внешности утомляют, бесконечные перечисления имён и титулов, имеющих исключительно эпизодическое значение, запутывают и без того сложную схему основных героев.
Самое мерзкое, что автор взял существующего и очень крутого исторического персонажа и вылепил из нее какую-то безобразную истеричку, а не монархиню. Фу таким быть!

Ein "historischer Roman" sollte doch vielleicht zumindest Teile der Biografie der Hauptperson korrekt berichten können. Absurde Charakterisierungen - im wesentlichen 250 Seiten Rufmord an Margarete von Tirol.

O lectură mai greu de pătruns, nu te prinde din prima, însă subtilitățile vieții acestei Margareta de Tirol, destinul ei și mai ales faptul că întâmplările ei sunt reale, dau o notă mult mai profundă textului.

Поначалу роман вызывал мой бурный восторг, я думала, что автор сейчас нам расскажет, что безобразная герцогиня была хорошей правительницей, а её не оценили, или что-нибудь наподобие. Автор же излишне романтизировал историю, поставил в центре противостояние двух женщин и всё скатилось в унылое ничто. Маргарита даже не умная, она получилась какая-то никакая. Просто страшная женщина и никчёмная правительница, как героиня и не стоит ничего. Зачем было и начинать писать о зависти одной женщины к красоте другой? Только чтобы потешить мужское самолюбие, дескать какая в сущности разница, красивая ты или не очень, когда это мужской мир и мужчинам в нём всё решать. И в конце автор всё же говорит, что в мужском мире всё-таки лучше быть красивой, это им более приятно. К истории вся эта шовинистская байка не имеет никакого отношения. Миф о безобразности Маргариты был изобретён после её смерти. А также история знала и сильных правительниц, которые чего-то добивались в мужском мире: английская Елизавета, русские Екатерины и Анна, китайская Цыси и так далее.
В общем, я жестоко разочарована в Фейхвангере, который умудрился слить хорошую тему.

Das Buch an sich ist gut, viele Informationen über damalige Zeit. Was mich sehr stört ist wie der Autor die Herzogin Margarette beschreibt: klug, intelligent, gebildet, ziehlsträbig...
Keine ihrer Handlungen in Buch bestätigt das, aber im Gegenteil sie war stäts ein Spielball der Andren.
Die bedeutesten Erreignisse waren nicht die Folgen von durchachten oder langfristigen Plänen sondern immer als kurzfristige Reaktion auf Kränkung. Und es führte immer zum Nachteil von Tirol und deren Bewohner.
Meiner Meinung nach war sie eine verbitterte, unweitsichtige, impulsive, nachtragende Frau.
Also beim besten Willen sehe ich hier keine "Sorge um Tirol und seine Menschen" wie der Autor andauern behauptet.
Auch die deklassierung von Bayern und deren Beewohner als "nicht so wichtig, deren Wohl ist nicht meine Sorge: obwohl ich darüber herrsche" nervt.
Spoiler: die "kluge" Herzogin hat nur am Schluß gegen die Rivalin etwas unternommen!
Die "kluge" Herzogin hat nicht kappiert wer ihren Sohn ermordet hat, im Gegenteil die hat den Mörder sogar noch belohnt.

Na hodinách středověku často zmiňovaná kniha. Jako se o Napoleonovi nepřesně traduje, že byl malý a Rudolfa II. máme díky filmu zafixovaného jako vrtošivého, ale dobráckého císaře, tak díky této knize vstoupila do povědomí lidí Markéta Tyrolská, pro svoje krásné plné rty, které tehdy nebylo možné nechat upravit plastickou chirurgií, zvaná Pyskatá, jako děsná obluda a ohava. Není to pravda, kronikáři ji popisují jako velmi půvabnou ženu. Ale historická (ne)přesnost by mi nevadilo, vadilo mi, že knížka je strašná nuda. Feuchtwangera mám ráda, ale tady jsem celou dobu děsně trpěla a byla jsem ráda, že už je konec. Nemá to moc děj a když ještě víte, že ten děj se takhle nestal, tak to prostě naštve.

This book stunned me when I was a teenager. The two main characters, one incredibly beautiful and one very ugly. One -mean-spirited, selfish and destructive; the other - caring, ethical, striving to be the best servant to the people. And all of her good efforts completely break against the public perceptions. This extreme, unsettling, horrifying effect of the public perceptions - and nOTHING CAN BE DONE - was difficult to bear.

I really enjoyed this particular Fleuchtwanger's book; for sure it's not his best,but I do admire the easy flow of bits of historical facts and the fictional story behind them... Sunday read,for sure!

I was really looking forward to this book - it looked so interesting and very off-beat. I was also very taken by the fact it was written during such a striking period of modern German history.
It started off quite well - joyous, jaunty and jolly - all the j's. But soon enough it just became very boring. No depth, no character development , no understanding with any of the characters so absolutely no empathy or backing of anyone , no hatred even of anyone because I don't understand all these players - all they are, are names. I got the feeling - but again I could be totally wrong as it was all very vapid - that this was a veiled political commentary of the time , but it didn't make for good medieval-set reading , whatever the overall theme and point was supposed to be. A real shame.

Zavaróan a sok a név (ezért olvastam ilyen lassan), és feltűnően hiányzik a nép, a nyomorgó szegény tömeg, kizárólag udvari csillogást és a korabeli Európa gyorsan mozgó hatalmi térképének intrikáit látjuk. Titokzatos, hogy – legalábbis az olyan, történelemből közepesen alulról tájékozott olvasónak, mint én – csak körülbelül lehet betájolni a regény idejét, egyetlen dátum sincs a szövegben. Viszont mindent vitt, hogy az erős hangulatból nem lehet kijönni olvasás után sem. Ezeket imádom. Ja, és lewikiztem, bár persze ez annyit is ér, mindenesetre ezt találtam: "Margaret was exceptionally beautiful". A csibész szerzője, az!!

In de -rampzalige- 14e eeuw heerst hertogin Margaretha over Tirol. Zij moet zich staande houden temidden van allerlei intriges van andere machthebbers in het toenmalige (midden van) Europa. Er worden voortdurend complotten gesmeed en gevechten geleverd. Margaretha zou zeer lelijk zijn geweest, hoewel zij ook wel als een mooie vrouw is geportretteerd (feit of fictie?). De schrijver benadrukt herhaaldelijk haar lelijkheid, wat op den duur gaat irriteren.

Grootse schets van Europa eind 14de eeuw, over de strijd om een zeer strategisch gebied in midden Europa: Tirol. Komt het bij Beieren, Oostenrijks Habsburgers, willen de Duitsers er nog wat mee, of de Italianen?
Hoofdpersoon is een foeilelijke hertogin die over een gezond stel hersens beschikt en eigenlijk het beste wil voor het Tiroolse volk. Bedrog, verraad, doortraptheid en anderszins slechte mensen omringen haar.

Ich mag das Buch sehr gerne. Margarethe Maultasch hat für Tirol sehr viel erreicht und der historische Roman ist sehr nah an der Realität. Es wird auf schnick-schnack verzichtet, was den Roman zwar etwas trocken, aber umso informativer macht.
Mittlerweile habe ich das Buch zum 2.mal gelesen und werde es sicher wieder einmal lesen.

Y, con tres estrellas, creo que estoy siendo generosa. La trama es repetitiva y lenta, no es un libro que te haga querer seguir leyendo. Se utilizan en exceso los mismos adjetivos para cada personaje y la narración no es especialmente buena (de hecho, está más cercana a regular. Y, lo peor de todo, las faltas de ortografía básicas que encontraba de vez en cuando.

interesting and well-written historical novel about the last ruler of an independent Tyrol.. while some things are not historically accurate (apparently, a contemporary described the title character as beautiful,..), the whole story stands on its feet and flows toward a logical conclusion that largely corresponds to what actually happened

Історія повністю розчарувала. Та що там, взагалі не зацікавила. Дратують постійні описи зовнішності Маргарити з уживанням одних і тих же слів. Мораль: « Народишся красивою - будеш щасливою». Принаймні, так я зрозуміла.
