Miniature Hakumei and Mikochi dye cloth, get a haircut, and build a stone wall.
The art in this book is beautiful - lots of very elaborate nature scenes and adorable animals. I didn't like this volume as much as the first one though because I only really liked the first story where they run into an owl. I'll still give the third one a try.
More mini adventures by little people with big hearts.
Looking for a series that is not violent but occasionally excites you with moments of danger? Perhaps you are looking for a manga that explains random things like how to create natural dyes, brew Limoncello, and how masonry with stones work then do I have a book for you. Hakumei and Mikochi are an odd pair of friends that balance each other out as they live life as they see fit in their woodland world. Along the way we are introduced to new characters and revisit characters from previous volumes who have had the honor to also call these pint sized ladies friends whether of the same race as them or among the animals of the woods who have an impressive level of sapience and occasionally a snappy way with attire as well. This series continue to be adorable while also informative with fantastic art though the concept of pint sized money is still a wonder to me considering someone has to be either making this money in this size or perhaps the story is far into the future and it turns out all he humanoids are normal sized and all the animals and trees are just massive but they still use the old currency. :)
Within volume two we see Hakumei and Mikochi discover a horned owl and survive to tell the tale, Mikochi wants to give her friend Sen some nice outfits so invites her over to try some ideas out. However the colors seem a bit bright so it is up to Sen and Hakumei to gather some materials to darken the dye, a stone wall is in need of repair and Hakumei has a need to help with its restoration however being so small it won't be easy to convince the others to let her help, Hakumei discovers an unusual egg shaped house/salon on her travels and meets the interesting Jada who offers to cut her hair even if it is her day off, and finally Hakumei and Mikochi heard of a café where you bring your own snacks and decide to pack up some raisin bread sandwiches to check it out, along the way they meet a pair of rats who ae interested in some of the sandwiches they packed and decide to give them a ride so long as they are willing to share.

In this installment we see a lot more of Hakumei then we do Mikicho and I liked it. While I liked seeing the two together in the first book, I also liked getting to know the two of them on their own. And the addition of more characters is a bonus. Plus the art is amazing. Everything I would think a cozy world int he land of the tiny people can be.
Would have been 5 stars but when asked if they were married they said they were only roommates. Sure bud. Whatever you say. Otherwise, super adorable. The builder's guild is the best. Cute necromancer is second best. Seeing more of the world and others in it was awesome.
These books are so cute. It's nice to have an easy book to read quickly, that's full of warmth. I only wish they were in color: the last extra story at the end was in color and it was so lovely!
This is the sweetest, cutest, most wholesome cozy thing I’ve ever read. This is my new favorite series. If you love cottagecore you need to read this. Nothing but simple sweet short stories with our tiny main characters. A life in the woods and friendships with all the woodland creatures is all I want. This gives me that.
The animals and the detailed nature drawings are always so lovely, but the stories don't quite hit the spot for me. Love looking at the scenery, though.
Read this second volume of Takuto Kashiki's Hakumei & Mikochi Series for Reddit Fantasy's 2023 Bingo Square Mundane Jobs, the protagonists are a tailor and a carpenter. This book qualifies for hard mode as it does not take place on Earth.
Chapter 9 - Horned Owl and Old Stories [Anime Episode 4] While gathering herbs, our duo are startled by Oroshi, a Horned Owl who is huge considering they're 3 inches tall. Mikochi injures her leg forcing them to take refuge in a cave. Hakumei goes to retrieve their goods but meets Oroshi again, giving it their dried meats. As they swap stories to pass the time, our friends later find out Oroshi isn't as scary as they thought.
Chapter 10 - Persnikety Dyeing [Anime Episode 9] Mikochi shows off her designing and tailoring skills to make a dress for the cutest ever necromancer student of life, Sen. She likes the color purple, so they go out hunting for things to dye the fabric the perfect color. I found it adorable that a blueberry is basically the size of a watermelon for those tiny people. And that lovely dress after .... aaah!
Chapter 11 - The Union Work Site [Anime Episode 5] Iwashi introduces Hakumei to the chairman of the local construction association, Narai, and his deputy, Katen who rejects her. Hakumei stubbornly turns up at the work site, where she sees how Chairman Narai directs his crew. Narai: The Rock Piercer Association is ... Workers: SAFE!! Speedy !! Thorough !! And a Tight team!!!" Hakumei's offer to take any and every dirty job including maintaining Iwashi's tools, plus her resolve and work ethic impresses Narai who eventually relents. If only real life hard bosses could be won over like this.
Chapter 12 - Boulder and Pinning Stones [Anime Episode 5] Mikochi arrives at the construction site to help Narai's wife, Hakuyo, cook for the workers. Hakumei gets a chance to shine after noticing a dangerous flaw in a boulder that could have had terrible consequences. She also devises a method to cut a big stone.
Chapter 13 - The Egg Stylist [Anime Episode 6] Hakumei chances upon an ostrich egg home that's also a salon, called the Jade Egg. After talking to stylist Jada, she becomes curious enough to get a haircut. Jada is something else!
Chapter 14 - Cafe and Raisin Bread [Not adapted in anime] Mikochi prepares a huge picnic basket of Raisin Bread as the duo head off to a cafe where you're supposed to bring your own snacks as they only serve reportedly very excellent coffee. They have no idea where the cafe is, but accept a ride from some rats. This sweet chapter was not in the anime, so I sadly cannot add a picture to show how wholesome and tasty the raisin bread looked.
Special Story - Barrels of Mulberry Wine [Not adapted in anime] This special story has some pages that are in full color! Both images here are the initial and final panels of this special story. Hakumei and Mikochi brew WAY too much Mulberry wine.
After selling most of it there are 20 barrels left, their beetle can't carry it up so Hakumei brings some friends to help out!
This series!!! It's just such a beautiful, cosy cottagecore slice of life hug, with traditional Japanese elements which are really interesting too. And so much detail on every page!
I love Mikochi, Hakumei, Sen, and the rest of the predominantly female cast, their many tiny feasts and adventures, and all their animal friends and neighbours. Cosy animal stories are a favourite of mine, especially ones with lots of food! Hoping we see more of Café Glimmer in future volumes. Coffee shops where you bring your own snacks sound great!
I was expecting not to enjoy the construction section as much in this volume, but then I still got absorbed in the story and loved it over all.
My only issue was what felt like a moment of lesbian / bisexual erasure or heteronormativity - there's a moment where a character thinks Mikochi is Hakumei's wife (which felt validating as in my head they're a cute couple!), and Hakumei and her boss look perturbed. That's not too bad, but then Hakumei says 'I'm a girl.', implying that the character has mistaken her for a guy and that she couldn't possibly be in a relationship with Mikochi otherwise. If she had said 'I'm straight' or 'We're just friends' or something similar, it would have felt more inclusive (even if I still secretly ship them!).
Otherwise, I want to keep returning to this lovely, cosy world and live among the giant mushrooms, lemons and crabs! ^'__'^
Something that particularly interested me about this one was the difference between American and Japanese work culture: in this one, we get to learn more about Hakumei's "fixer" job, and at one point the bossman challenges her to sharpen his chisel (they take great pride in their tools, so it's a big deal to sharpen the boss's tools), and she refuses to because she's not ready. In America, that would be seen as weakness and lack of initiative, but in the book the bossman says "fearless people can't be trusted", indicating it was a test of her character and she passed.
P.S. the mini-story at the end in color was BEAUTIFUL
Okay, elephant in the room: what's up with the "no homo" moment in Chapter 11? I'm not super invested in Hakumei and Mikochi being lesbians, but this makes it very clear that even the IDEA of two women being married is incomprehensible. It's weird! It makes me feel alienated from an otherwise lovely book that I see myself and my loved ones in a lot!
The rest of this is still great. It's a lovely depiction of a community and I appreciate that it keeps growing the secondary cast and having people stick around and get deeper characterization. I'm just a bit grumped up about this one moment.
Such a cute little collection of stories. I actually enjoyed this volume more than the first one even though it too me forever to actually sit down and read it in one go. I hope this weekend to read up to volume four. But once again a cute cottage-core story that will warm your hearts as it had mine! Especially the part about the wall, an awesome story about dedication and deamination!
Probably one of my favorite mangas- you get a fun new little storyline within each chapter and I’m continually excited to read what they get up to! I also love how cute all the characters are being animals and bugs … I mean Hakumei & Mikochi are so small they slice a blueberry like an apple I can’t handle it 🥹
I love this series & plan to read them all. This one was a little less exciting (the stone story was a little long & boring) but I liked the rest of the stories and learning about different crafts (ie dyeing fabric, recipes). The illustrations are beautiful and I like the little vignettes called columns at the end of each chapter.
