Pilar Bueno and Lucy Bond begin by discussing control and choosing eco-alternatives that are better for you and better for the world we live in. There are many commercial products we purchase like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, anti-perspirant, cleanser, moisturizer, cosmetics, shaving cream, hair styling products, sun cream, and nail polish.

Labels such as natural, organic or herbal don’t mean much in the beauty world, as regulations are not the same as they are for food. The author points out there are hundreds of chemicals of “safe doses” that we don’t know about or how they combine with other chemicals.

As a biologist and chemist, I am most impressed with the research that these authors have done on the various chemicals found in our beauty products. Parabens, preservatives to increase shelf life, can be found in many products. In particular Methyl paraben has been shown to increase aging effects, and disrupt the endocrine system. Other chemicals include Diasolidinyl Urea, DEA, TEA, Sodium Laurel Sulfates, petroleum jelly and distillates, propylene glycol, PVP/VA Copolymer, synthetic colors and fragrances, alcohols, Flouride, lead, phthalates, and many more.

The author also points out that millions of animals around the world have suffered horrific experiments and death in the name of beauty. There are testing alternatives that are humane, faster and cheaper! Europe made it illegal to sell animal tested cosmetics in 2013, yet it is still legal in the US and Canada.

The authors then discuss the importance of sleep, hydration, exercise and diet. They also discuss eco-conscious shopping and making your own products. I especially love the easy recipes for everything from hair cleaners to face washes, makeup removers, bath soaks and more!!

This is truly an amazing beauty resource for anyone wanting to “Keep it Green and Clean” !!!
