The Sharded Few #3

The Splendent Seed

An age is ending.

In the Frayed Lands, Salahi and Hollow refugees from Karath press on towards the ruins of the Winter Palace, hoping to claim the Light and join the ranks of the Sharded Few. But great forces are stirring in riftbeasts stalk the plains, the People of the Wind are unsettled, and a legion of the dead is gathering under the will of the Radiant Emperor. Heth Su Canaav must navigate both the treacherous politics of his new hold and the dangers that are closing in around them all.

And he must do so without Rhenna and Deryn, who have vanished after embarking on a mission to tell the Black Sword about Cael Shen's betrayal and the mad ambitions of the Duskhold's White Spider. The truth of what happened to them can be found far away in the Sanguine City of Ashasai, but the bloodlords have set great plans in motion, and Deryn will find himself an important piece in a game that spans worlds . . .

Another Wonderful Chapter

The release of this third book surprised me, but I was so happy I immediately started rereading the first two to properly prepare. That’s when you know you have a great series - when you’re thrilled to delve back in from the very beginning. This third book did not disappoint - same great worldbuilding (all the disparate cultures and shard-powers) and the paths each of the MCs took were varied and deeply engaging. A lot of surprises, a lot of “come on!” moments, but the surprises felt earned - like their foundations had been laid throughout the story. Finally, I’ll note that, for some reason, I thought this was going to be a trilogy and there came a point when I was at the 60% point that I realized that, with all the various storylines, there was no way this book would be the end. So that allowed me to emotionally prepare for an ending that would leave me wanting more. And that’s exactly what happened! So now I’ll wait and I’m sure when book 4 comes out, I’ll happily reread the preceding books!

Great continuation, but may have lost direction

I always like to start off my reviews by saying whether or not I enjoyed a book.

I really did enjoy my experience, and appreciated experiencing what each of our main characters and crew have been up to. They really have struggled, progressed, but at times, each of them have gone through harrowing experiences only to magically come out the other end, seemingly fine albeit with some consequences. There’s definitely a little bit more plot armor applied to each of these characters then what was apparent in the past.

I know that this book is primarily to build up to the next one, and so I will reserve any judgment of the overall plot until then, but it does feel like there is quite a lot that is left unresolved by the end of this book. Overall, I did enjoy the first two more than this third one, so I hope the next installment will make up for some lost ground here.

I did not finish at about 1/4 of the way through. I had to spend an entire evening trying to remember what had happened in previous books, how the magic worked, and what the alliances were. I took notes from the review sections at the beginning. But the writing just had problems from the beginning. For example, Heth is wounded in the shoulder but it "seemed to have missed any of his muscles". But that's not how shoulders work; they are covered in muscle. Phrases like "heartwood-hard hands" feel like an overly difficult road block, especially with the alliteration. But it's the over-reliance on ellipses that finally caused me to give up. They're on almost every single page, so I found myself looking for yet another one rather than reading the book. This author does a great job world-building, and I enjoy the concepts he produces. Unfortunately, the writing simply gets in the way too much.

UPDATE: I decided to stick with it a little more, and it definitely got better. I’m at about 60-65% and calling it quits for now. I feel a vested interest in this storyline, so I’m planning to come back to it when the series is finished. For me, it’s too complex to try and pick it up when there’s a year between books. I saw on Reddit that a six-book arc is planned, so I’ll wait until it’s finished and then try again.

Felt like an connector/intermediate/middle book for sure, but this was pretty good. The expansion of the world's lore was great- all of the cultures, types of magic, types of terrain, and even different realms. Similar to the Raveling series, Mr. Hutson can design a sprawling vivid world- reminds me of those massive RPG worlds in many ways.

One other thing- Zayin is awesome. Fingers crossed that he survives the series.
