Better than the Sinapore guide (at least this one doesn't explain how to use a cash machine) but still very light on detail. There are the usual photos of course, which make this series perhaps better as souvenirs of a trip than guides to a trip.
To me, if you are going to visit Bali it's because it's a paradise island with local culture (temples, textiles) and beautiful water to swim in. Essentially, that is all I know now, though I have probably being introduced to every single temple in the place. Oh, the island is first stop from Australia if you are looking for somewhere nice, that was new but probably obvious if I had stopped to think about it.
I bought this guide because there was a sale and the usually expensive (though worth it!) DK Eyewitness guides are great for content, explanations and pictures. I have to admit I was slightly less impressed by this guide though it still has great pictures and useful mini-maps of towns and villages plus macro-maps of the areas so that you can see historic sites of interest in relation to each other. I wish there was a brief section of Literature, specifically fiction, with reference to Bali – I’ve seen this in other DK Witness guides. But, in all, I’d say its a pretty good investment and a handy reference book for the region.
A very good high-level overview. I wouldn't go to Bali having read ONLY this book unless I were a much more carefree individual. It was a nice break from the more in-depth books which were starting to overwhelm. This one had lots of pretty pictures and as a visual person, I appreciated the feel for each region that provided. I found that I was interested in seeing things that I'd glossed over in the other books and when I went back to them and re-read I thought "Oh Yeah! I've got to see this!"
This was a decent guide book. It breaks down the areas of the island and gives a detailed map for each area and the things to do there. It helped me decide the areas I want to focus on while I'm there. It also has a bit of history so that you're familiar with the culture. And the photos are phenomenal. Eyewitness guides are always the most colorful.
I read this in 2001 as we went to Bali and Lombok for our honeymoon. The places are wonderful and the book is wonderful. I love the eyewitness giudes - they're so colourful and have loads of background information.
A good travel guide of Bali and Lombok island. Gives history and details of each part of island of Bali, where to stay, where to eat and what to visit. Gives certain practical tips of how to move around safely in Bali like the locals.
Flipping through this and getting ideas for my trip next year to Bali. With what's going to happen in a week time between Bali and Australian relations, the trip might never even happen.
