Sally Roth is an award-winning author of 20 or so popular books about birds, nature, and gardening, including the best-selling "Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible," and a contributing editor for "Birds & Blooms" magazine.

Her latest book is "An Eye on the Sparrow: The Bird Lover's Bible," which uses quotes from the Bible as a jumping-off point for examining the natural behavior of the birds behind those Scriptures. It's a bird book, and it's for everyone, religious or not.

Sally's also an enthusiastic public speaker, whether it's grabbing a stranger on the street ("Hey, want to see something cool?") or talking to an audience of hundreds ("Hey, want to see something cool?"). She'll be appearing in the Michiana area (northern Indiana/Michigan) in early spring of 2013, as well as other places.

She and her husband Matt Bartmann share their home in the high Rockies with two dogs, one cat, a family of pine squirrels, a hard-working packrat named Sisyphus, a spotted skunk who lives beneath the house, a well-fed bunch of birds at the feeder, and a stable of old Volvos.

A wonderful addition to my personal library. I am always excited to find gems like this, in my book searches, outside of book stores. The beautiful poppies, on the wrap-around cover, caught my eye and I am glad I dug for it! Living in an urban area that sits next to a rural area, I have the best of both worlds for growing all kinds of flora, herbs included. I have just started a small potted herb collection and am hopeful that I will plenty of fresh herbs for my cooking and sharing, with the help of this great book!

Incredibly helpful. I didn't read the entire book cover to cover, but I found all the information I needed on the herbs I want to grow.
It gives a great balance of basic care and growing tips, general plant information, and interesting facts, uses and recipes for every herb known to man.
An excellent book!

This is one of the more generally useful books I've seen, with lots of good information on garden design, planting, maintenance, and harvest plus a directory of individual herbs in the back with photos and about a half page description.

Excellent reference book for a beginner or advanced herb gardener.

Except for the add sand to clay section. That is a recipe for concrete. DON'T DO IT!! Lots of authors still spread this crazy advice. That needs to stop.

I think this book by Sally Roth is one of the best resource on growing herbs,
in a nutshell, regardless of the 2001 copyright.

It doesn't seem to matter how many of these books I buy I can't grow a thing to save my life.
