"Kletva" je povijesni u kojem je prikazana buna sto su je digli hrvatski velikasi protiv hrvatsko-ugarskog kralja Sigismunda, ali i borbe izmedju biskupskog Kaptola i gradjanskog Grica. Naslov romana uzet je po kletvi koju je pred Bozic 1396. na gradjane Grica bacio biskup Pavao. Kletva je bila skinuta 12. travnja 1397. August Senoa je zapoceo objavljivati ovaj svoj opsezni povijesni roman, o dogadjajima iz 14. stoljeca koji su preusmjerili hrvatsku povijest, 1880. godine u Narodnim novinama. Smrt ga sprijecila završetku ovog djela. Roman je na osnovu njegovih spisa, nastavio i dovrsio Josip Eugen Tomic.
August Šenoa was a Croatian novelist, critic, editor, poet, and dramatist.
He was a transitional figure, who helped bring Croatian literature from Romanticism to Realism and introduced the historical novel to Croatia. He wrote more than ten novels, among which the most notable are:
Zlatarovo zlato (Goldsmith's gold; 1871) Čuvaj se senjske ruke (Pirates of Senj; 1876) Seljačka buna (Peasants' revolt; 1877) Diogenes (1878) Šenoa was also the author of the popular patriotic song "Živila Hrvatska".
He was born in Zagreb, then part of the Habsburg Empire, into a family of Czech-German origin. His surname was originally spelled Schönoa. He studied law in Prague. He also lived in Vienna for a while, but returned to Zagreb in 1866. From 1874 to 1881, Šenoa edited the literary journal Vijenac ("Wreath").
In 1880, he helped the victims of the Great Zagreb Earthquake, only to pick up pneumonia in the process. Despite the sickness, he didn't give up writing his last novel, "Kletva". He died in 1881, at the age of 43.
In his novels, he fused the national romanticism characterized by buoyant and inventive language with realist depiction of the growth of petite bourgeois class.
This "father of Croatian novel" (and modern national literature) is at best in his mass Cecildemillean scenes and poetic description of oppressed Croatian peasantry, nobility struggling against foreign rule (Venetians, Austrians/Germans and Hungarians) and romanticised period from the 15th to the 18th century. It has become a commonplace phrase that "Šenoa created the Croatian reading public", especially by writing in a popular style.
CRO/ENG Trebalo mi je malo vremena, uz stanku između čitanja, da promislim i iznesem svoje dojmove vezane uz ovo djelo, koje mi je sve do sada bilo poznato samo po naslovu i po činjenici kako je, zbog autorove prerane smrti, ostalo nedovršeno. Nakon mjesec i pol dana čitanja, mogu reći kako je, prvenstveno, ovo bilo jedno zanimljivo iskustvo i uvid u period hrvatske povijesti o kojem sam bio slabo upoznat (primarno zbog poznate prodaje Dalmacije za 100 000 dukata Veneciji od strane aktualnog vladara Ladislava Napuljskog). Međutim, događaji, koji se odvijaju, prethode gore spomenutoj povijesti i stavljaju u fokus dva sukoba, u kojima se isprepliču povijesne i izmišljene osobe. Prvi, veći sukob, je između borbe za prijestolje Hrvatsko-Ugarske države između nekoliko pretendenata, a koje podupiru lokalni velikaši, dok je drugi sukob usredotočen na razmirice i netrpeljivost između Kaptola (kojega predstavljaju svećenstvo i plemići) i Gradeca (kojega predstavlja građanstvo). Treba pohvaliti autora što je odlučio proširiti svoju prokušanu formulu iz ''Zlatarevog zlata'' i ''Seljačke bune'' kako bi stvorio daleko veću pozornicu na kojemu se politika i nacionalni identitet isprepliču sa moralnim vrijednostima i važnošću koju religija odigrava u pozadini, dok su likovi prikaz šarolikog svijeta koji nastanjuju. Pokraj tolike hvale, imam i primjedbu što sam primjetio kako na mnogim mjestima ima radnji koje, zapravo, ne vode nikamo, dok sam od samog vrhunca očekivao nešto što bi bilo nalik velikom sukobu u ''Seljačkoj buni''. Također, brojne radnje gube kontinuitet, s obzirom da se idućih nekoliko poglavlja (koja znaju biti i na razini pripovijetke) prebacuje na drugi sukob i druge osobe. Za mene je ovo i više nego solidna četvorka i vrijedi pročitati ovaj naslov, ako je netko veliki ljubitelj hrvatske povijesti.
I needed a little time, with pauses between reading, to think and present my review towards this work, which has so far been known to me only by it's title and the fact that, due to author's premature death, it has been left unfinished. After a month and a half of reading, I can say that, first, it was one interesting experience and a view into the period of Croatian history which has been familiar to me vaguely (mostly because of the famous trade of Dalmatia for 100 000 ducats to Venice by the active ruler Ladislav of Naples). However, the events, that transpire, happen prior to the above mentioned history and put two conflicts into the focus, in which historical and fictional characters intertwine. The first, larger clash, is a fight for the throne of Croatian-Hungarian state between pretenders, supported by local magnates, while the other conflict is focused on disputes and intolerance between Captol (presented by priests and nobles) and Gradec (presented by townsfolks). Author deserves a praise for his decision to expand his tried formula from ''The Goldsmith's Treasure'' and ''Peasant's Revolt'' and thus to make a bigger stage on which politics and national identity intertwine with moral values and the importance of religion in the background, while the characters are depictions of divers world they inhabit. With so much praise, I have a remark towards many places where the plot, actually, leads to nowhere, while I expected from the climax something on pair with the grand conflict in ''Peasant's Revolt''. Also, a lot of stories lose their continuation, since the next few chapters (which are on level with short stories due to their lengths) shift toward the other conflict and persons. For me, it's more than a solid four star and, to those who are a big fans of Croatian history, worth checking it out.
