Andare avanti

Rate this book

3.5 stars. Nice story about Luke, an American living in the UK to escape an abusive ex and a lonely life. He meets older and wiser Paul, who is recovering from the loss of his partner 14 months earlier. Both of these lonely people see something very special in the other.

Although an abuse victim is a common theme in m/m romance I was happy to see there was no 'magical healing penis' taking place in this tale. Luke's self-realisation comes the old-fashioned way, through his own efforts and personal growth (and of course falling in love doesn't hurt either). The ex does make a very brief appearance but our hero kicks him out. I found Luke a very sympathetic character. I was really rooting for him to get his life back on track and be with Paul.

What I didn't enjoy so much in this novel was the huge number of sex scenes. It seemed like they were getting it on every couple of pages. And it was always the same high-octane type of sex. I wished it was more nuanced and reflected the ups and downs of the MC's relationship but it seemed to be permanently dialled up to the max. I'm not saying that it was badly written sex, just that it overwhelmed the story for me. I'm sure others will have a different opinion.

I vacillated between 3 and 4 stars for this one.

This is one of those stories where I really felt the hardships of life and ensuing years of trying to find your place really rang true. Luke had these full range of emotions and vulnerabilities deep within his independent/never let anyone close barriers. He's a character I love reading about. This story had so many things I love in a story, but didn't get a higher rating because of the overwhelming amount of sex scenes that just really took away from the story. Terrific story and characters that just got a little too buried from the sex scenes. Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable read and I'd definately read more about Luke :)

Luke was the star for me loved him, a fantastic range of emotions unfold and layers start to come off slowly he is a beautiful lovable guy, I was with him all the way. What a complex prickly character he was, but worth fighting for. Paul sees through the barriers and goes for it he is perfectly suited a great fit they are for each other. A fantastic story that unfortunately got bogged down with way too much sex which detracted from the overall story. A believable romance which I still found enjoyable because Luke was a fascinating character and I would love to see him succeed in every way possible.

Not sure why they were together besides the sex. And there was a lot of sex and I believe the author was trying to enhance or explain their love to one another by using sex. (If that makes sense) However for me it didn't work, it felt like sex just stalled the real conversation from happening.

And really his stalker/abusive ex-boyfriend flies to England from Chicago and is easily told to go away...? Well he wasn't a very good stalker/abusive boyfriend if he can just be sent packing that easily.

You can tell by my comments as I read the book that there was a lot of sex. I don't mind reading a hot book but when there's more sex than plot that's not good. Here are some problems I had specifically:

1. Psycho boyfriend: yeah, yeah, you have an abusive boyfriend. Been there done that, show me something new. Make your version of this something interesting.

2. Boyfriend is stalker: Holy crap the boyfriend came to England? If this dude flies all the way over to England there's no way he just says "oh, okay you don't like me, bye!" That storyline just insults readers.

3. Too much sex: Hard to believe but I have to agree with others, way too much sex. And it was all the same type sex, I did not see any loving sex.

4. Stereo typical friends: We had to have the friend that of course hates our young stud. And yet are other hero does nothing to stop him from insulting him. This is only a superficial excuse to have tension in the story without actually having any additional plot.

Bottom-line it was an interesting story and it could've been much more complex than what we got. I'll probably check out the author's other books but hopefully it's not as stereotypical as this.

An interesting story, especially since Luke really has a complex and difficult history.
A less than ideal childhood and an abusive ex.
Paul is a good man getting over his lovers death more than a year before, although his grieving is definitly more in the background and not a real part of the story IMO.
I liked seeing Luke grow and gain confidence and self esteem he deserves all good things he can get. Luke is the highlight of this story for me and at times I was a bit annoyed with Paul not understanding his reactions better, but I was glad that he didn't give up on him!
I was a bit annoyed at the whole Steve situation, I think Paul should have seen or known what was going on , or at least made sure it didn't happen.
Henry was the one that stayed with Luke almost the whole time at the party and took care of Luke, not Paul, even though he knew how difficult it was for him.
Lastly the sex, there is a lot of sex in this story, and that can be a good thing, but in this case it felt repetitive for the most part and I ended up skimming.

This story is an enjoyable passive read. In general I had a feeling that something was missing. Sure Paul was crazy about Luck and vice versa, but their slowly coming together story was to plain and in long run to boring. There is to much sex between Luck and Paul and at the end I didn't enjoy it. But hey, there is HEA, as much as there could be. Nothing is perfect, but together they could manage it all.

Pretty good story overall, but some issues to note. The story was set in Bristol England, but there was no flavor of British dialect or setting. Sometimes Paul (Brit) used American words like emergency room, and Amer guy Luke use British words like carryall, but he's only been in country for 4 months. Many minor typos also were a problem. The ex coming from America to England was crazy far-fetched. You don't drop hundreds of dollars on the expectation of getting back your BF who you .

With the exception of a couple of things, I really enjoyed this. Luke is a 22-year-old man who moved to the UK from the United States to escape an abusive relationship. Growing up in foster care and then surviving the abusive relationship forced him to be insecure and very lonely. Paul is a 36-year-old teacher whose partner died 14 months earlier. Neither Luke or Paul are looking for anything more than a quick hook up when they first meet but it quickly becomes so much more.

I love the older man/younger man theme so that was a huge plus for me. The relationship between Paul and Luke happens quickly but it's not insta-love. Time is taken to show the progression of the relationship. There are a few secondary characters that added nicely to the story and there are a couple that I didn't like at all (which is expected because they were both written as jerks). Paul is quite likable, if not a little on the boring side at times. I sympathized with Luke but not with some of his decisions and his "I'm not worthy" spiel kind of got old at times.

I am going to agree with other reviewers who stated that there is simply too much sex in this story and that took away from it. Don't get me wrong, it was written beautifully for the most part. There was just way too much of it.

Overall, an entertaining read though I felt that it dragged on a bit at times (mainly during the sex scenes... I found myself skimming quite a bit). The only issues I had with this book are minor and listed in the below spoiler. My first by this author. I am sure I will read more.

An emotional tale about a young man trying to moving on an abusive relationship; considering the theme, angst was an expected factor, but I was pleasantly surprise to find out that it wasn’t the main one. Too often the authors push on the easy tears button to make a story dig on your emotional barriers, and sometime it gets old. Here there was just that touch of drama, enough to justify the changing life decisions of Luke, but not so much to destroy him. Actually, the drama he is running away back home, and that comes back to tag him in Bristol, to me could have even stayed there, a memento of something bad that shouldn’t happen again, but it wasn’t really necessary for it to reappear in current time.

When 22 years old Luke meets 36 years old Paul, it’s obvious they are from different side of life, and it’s not only a question of age; while not rich, Paul is a teacher, with a steady job and a not wanted inheritance from his late partner. He is good from a quality life point of view, not so much when you talk about feelings. Paul wasn’t expecting to be alone at mid-thirties, he had figured he was to grow old with his partner in a contented and fulfilling relationship, without much bumps but good. Luke recognizes in him a companion loneliness, and he approaches Paul at a club. At first both Paul and Luke consider it a no strings attached night, but the sex is good, good enough they want to see where it will lead.

While Paul and his friends notice the age difference, and other differences as well, I have never felt like it mattered to Luke. Luke is more worried about his lack of formal instruction, or social status, than the fact he is so much younger than Paul. And there wasn’t either the common theme of the Daddy/boy pairing, it’s obvious that Paul is older than Luke, but Luke isn’t looking for a substitute fatherly figure. Maybe Paul’s work as a teacher will help him understanding Luke and pushing him towards the right steps without forcing him.

I liked this story and both main characters but the sex was too much and ultimately it made the reading less enjoyable for me.

Luke is twenty-two, he's American but he moved to England to escape an abusive relationship. He also has a difficult past, in which he had to live with several foster families. Those things have made him very insecure and his journey to his self-discovery is one of the main subjects of the book.
The other is his relationship with Paul, whom he meets one night in a club and that soon becomes very important to him after the two see each other a few times. Paul has some scars too: he had a long time partner that died not so long before he meets Luke.
The two embark on a relationship that at times is made very difficult by their respective issues: Luke has a hard time believing Paul, who is older, richer, more educated, might have a real interest in him; Paul feels guilty of moving on after his partner died.
I really liked the development of the relationship, I think it was written in a very believable way. Both characters overcome their fears, slowly but surely. In particular, I liked to see Luke learning to believe more in himself and stating going after his dreams instead of settling for what he has and that doesn't make him really happy.
What didn't work for me entirely is the sex: there was too much in the book, in my opinion. At times, I felt it really was in the way, it broke the flow and made me roll my eyes because I wanted to read about Luke and Paul and their issues and their love, instead of focusing on the sex that was one of the few things that always worked, since the first time. But that really was the only thing I didn't like. Overall, it was a nice love story.

There was a lot about this book I really liked. Luke and Paul's story began with a hookup after meeting in a bar and their sexual chemistry grew slowly into a deeper relationship. I liked how their characters developed throughout the story. Luke had a very troubled family life and previous relationship but the angst never felt like overkill - Luke just always expected anyone he loved to leave one day, simply because that was always the way it had been for him.

I also loved that Paul was able to see through Luke's defenses which prevented multiple fights/separations simply because no one would talk about anything, which drives me crazy in a story.

So why didn't I rate this higher? There is just simply too much sex. It ended up nearly derailing the story for me a couple of times.

Overall, I did enjoy this and look forward to reading more from this promising author.

Story had potential, but too much sex and too many unresolved issues in the entire plot (an abusive ex that goes all the way from USA to England just to patronize and insult his lover and when dismissed travels back overseas without a peep? a friend that harasses and humiliates his new friend's lover and then, just like that, apologizes? a waiter that loves cooking becomes a sous-chef in a restaurant just after studying some recipes book? please, give me a break! )

Great story and excellent writing. I really liked how the author presented Luke's life and how it had shaped him to the person he is now, without having to rehash it in every other page.

At its very heart, Moving On by H.J. Holt is a sweet story of healing and second chances. Two men, one who has lost his partner of six years to a tragic accident and the other, a broken man who survived years of foster homes and a demeaning, abusive relationship, find one another in the dark confines of a bar and their lives are irrevocably changed.

When Paul lost his partner, he lost a piece of himself and getting back to the dating world, as a thirty-something schoolteacher is harder than he ever thought. He is insecure, uncertain of his appeal—particularly to younger men. So when he comes across the younger, gorgeous Luke in a local nightclub, the last thing he expects is to fall head over heels in lust…and maybe, just maybe…love.

Luke is so very wounded and uses his bravado and quick temper to keep everyone at bay. Escaping from a sordid and difficult past, he has fled clear across the ocean to England to start over. But he is hampered not only by his insecurities, but his lack of money, family and confidence. He is adrift and lonely and so very vulnerable when he meets this gentle and caring man who offers him just a bit more than a casual one-night stand.

Moving On really had incredible potential. The two main characters were very believable—and you felt for them, wanted them to succeed and, at times, wanted to shake them both to make them see how much the other one really cared. The cast of secondary characters added to the overall story line and gave a flavor of tension to the page, causing you to occasionally clench your fists and catch your breath in surprise.

Yes—this story had incredible possibilities. However, it suffered from inattention to editing and more sex than was ever necessary to really further the plot. I understood that the mutual attraction between these two men began as a lust driven need to mutually satisfy one another—but after a while, quite frankly, I just wanted the sex to be over so I could get back to the story. There was so much of it that its alarming frequency began to pull me away from the plot. About half way through the book I found myself wanting to say, “no more--just tell the story please!”

Unfortunately, no one was listening. And so, much to my sadness, I cannot in good faith rate this story as it could have been rated. I think that H.J. Holt has incredible potential as a storyteller. She writes with a tenderness and insight that is incredible in its scope and beauty. But the constant driving sex that quickly took over the plot and became the focal point rather than the characters and their life together, left me unsatisfied and a bit fed up toward the end.

As I said at the start, Moving On is at its very heart a beautiful love story. Unfortunately that got lost and the novel suffered because of it.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

2.5 stars. I actually started this a few weeks ago and put it down. Picked it back up again today and plodded through. I can't put my finger on what it was, but it was a bit...slow.

Despite what I wrote, I didn't hate it. The writing wasn't bad, I think I was just expecting more.

This had a really sweet vibe - Paul and Luke felt like real people who were trying to connect. Luke was the young hot one, thinking he only has his body to offer and Paul was the older sadder one, mourning his past and trying to move on.

I believed their connection. I have observed that m/m books set in the UK often have a grittier, more real feel and this one does to. Luke's poverty and reaction to situations just felt real in a way that US m/m books gloss over.

It loses a star for me because there really was too much sex. I just started skimming those scenes.

I had great hopes for this book and was ultimately disappointed. Too much sex, too little plot. The problems were resolved within a few paragraphs. Luke was full of self-pity, while Paul was endlessly patient and understanding. I didn't really get a feel for Paul. I kept forgetting he'd lost his life partner after the first few chapters. So, yeah, I'm rather disappointed in the whole thing.

Simple and nice love story between Paul and Luke. Finally a rapport without misunderstandings and unspoken, sure Luke have a hard past and he is unsure but also with love of Paul move on and both exceed the differences in age and class...I forgot there're hot sex a lot.

The character growth is good, some serious topics as withholding the truth, suffering a partner's death and the effects of a low self-esteem have been well developed and the idea of moving on has been presented in a likable way.

Not that many cliches or "out-of-a-fantasy" moments. Pleasant read.
