“Free the child's potential, and you will transform him into the world.” -Maria Montessori
This beginner’s guide to the Montessori Method of homeschooling for children ages 2-6 is written by parents who have embraced this method of educating their own children. It was written in hopes of simplifying the process for other parents and caregivers who are considering doing the same. The Montessori Method of education can best be described as an "Aid to Life" rather than a specific method of passing on academic objectives.
This guide will help you learn how to bring the environment that your child lives and learns in down to eye-level with him or her. It will teach you how something as simple as getting rid of clutter can enhance the child’s learning experience. It will help you to learn tips on integrating everyday activities and tools already in your home into your child’s play time so that even during play they’re learning real skills that they’ll be using for a lifetime. This guide will also be helpful for setting up your child’s learning space, creating a daily routine and creating activities that will promote learning and keep your child interested and excited about it. Overall, by learning and implementing the Montessori Method in your home, you are creating a world where everyone is involved and children are thriving.
"We cannot create observers by saying 'observe', but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses." -Maria Montessori

A concise and practical guide to homeschooling your 2-6 year old using Montessori techniques. The authors are a husband and wife team. The wife has a teaching credential in Special Education. After the birth of their first child, they researched different homeschooling methodologies before deciding on Montessori. After several years of using Montessori techniques with their daughter, the authors share a simplified plan for introducing those techniques to any homeschooling environment without breaking the bank. These include good and frugal ideas for making some teaching tools at home with common household items.
The authors give some suggestions for what to do when lessons don't go as planned whether due to distractions or the child's lack of interest in the topic. There is also a resources section at the back of the book with websites and blogs for additional information and support.
This book is well written and can give a homeschooling parent an inexpensive way to incorporate some Montessori techniques into their lesson plans to see how they will work with their child's personality and learning style. Highly recommended!
I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway but that has not impacted my review.
The inflections chosen by the narrator Andreina Byrne throughout the entire book were not the best choices at all. They only reason why I suffered through the entire thing was because I paid for the audiobook and I really wanted to see if I could learn anything new about Montessori that I didn't already know from Maria Montessori's Official Handbook. I listen to a lot of audiobooks relating to Montessori and I just really find the delivery of this audiobook to sound really condescending. It was really hard to take the advice in this book seriously because I just could not ignore how flippant the narrator sounded. Skip this and just go listen to Maria Montessori's Official Handbook, it's part of the public domain.
If you want an introduction to Montessori and some simple activities to do with your little one, this book is great. For someone who has read a lot more and has a pretty good understanding of Montessori don’t bother reading this it too basic.
I received this book via FirstReads. It's a short, accessible book for parents who send their kids to Montessori schools and who don't, and want to foster creativity and individual development in their kids at home. The book takes a very caring approach, and acknowledges that 'partial' is also good.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This is a super-small book, and really just presents an overview of what Montessori is. It's a good introduction, just not very detailed.
