Pamela Freeman is an Australian author of books for both adults and children. Most of her work is fantasy but she has also written mystery stories, science fiction, family dramas and non-fiction. Her first adult series, the Castings Trilogy (Blood Ties, Deep Water and Full Circle) is published globally by Orbit books. She is best known in Australia for the junior novel Victor’s Quest and an associated series, the Floramonde books, and for The Black Dress: Mary MacKillop’s Early Years, which won the NSW Premier’s History Prize in 2006.
As of 2015, she will also be publishing historical novels under the name Pamela Hart.
Book 2 in the Floramonde series for young readers (or the young at heart, like me).
The first book had a magical feel to it, that didn't cross over to this book. However, that doesn't mean the book wasn't any good, because it is. This time, instead of the chapters telling many stories to make a whole, the entire book told a single story. Betony sets off to save her father, while her two best friends set off to save Betony from making a bargain she may regret.
In this book there is a dragon, magic, dealing with relationships (good and bad), and love. But the most important thing, in my opinion, is the theme that deals with the lengths we will go to to save those we cherish.
It's always scary revisiting a beloved childhood book because often they are not as wonderful as you remember This is not the case with Pamela Freeman. These are still some of the best books I have ever read, and 11 year old me has resurfaced and is stamping her feet in disgust at the fact that she is not a dryad. Hogwarts letter be damned, why am I not a tree spirit???
