It was supposed to be a quick return trip before heading back to Greece, but with Batwoman now seen as a cold-blooded killer in the public eye, Commissioner Savage declaring open season on anyone who wears the Bat, and Poison Ivy’s “urban renewal initiative” sprouting chaos in the streets, it’s going to be a long night…especially when Batman reaches out with a mission to get comms back up between the heroes. Maybe she should’ve watered her plants before she left…
Greg Rucka, is an American comic book writer and novelist, known for his work on such comics as Action Comics, Batwoman: Detective Comics, and the miniseries Superman: World of New Krypton for DC Comics, and for novels such as his Queen & Country series.
The series is interrupted by the bad seeds tie in which is shame because things were just developing and this caused it to pause still a fun issue where batwoman comes back to gotham only to fall inside of ivys take over and batman asks her to go in a mission solo i’m guessing what that is will be shown in the related bad seeds book and not in the next issue of batwoman. Also i wasn’t completely sure what was happening in the end of the previous issue It turns out kate did put her alice in the same mental institution she was in which is crazy that they trust that place even after all those cultists were in greece and kept track of her and alice.
Really liked Batwoman’s inclusion into the Bad Seeds event as it has felt very natural and not forced. I loved her interaction’s with Batman and how it was expressed in this issue of the almost mythological way the citizens of Gotham view her. The issue ends right when it picks up the pace but I’m very interested to see where this event goes in this title.
I really wanted this issue to be more than it is, and DaNi’s art is still phenomenal, but this issue felt like a setup for Batwoman to be side lined. The whole plot is Kate coming back to Gotham, Bad Seeds kicking off because her interior designer thought the full tree in the middle of her apartment was a good idea and wouldn’t be deadly with a person who can control plants running around, and then Batwoman meeting up with batman to get the side mission he briefly mentioned in the sunset special as she is the one tasked with going after the bat cache hidden in the church of St Dumas to get a working comms system going. But this story does introduce the interesting element of the TUCOs actively hunting Batwoman, especially as to the rest of the world she is seen as a killer due to her sister’s actions in her suit. This means we get to follow a group of heavily armed meat heads which feel vindicated in hunting down another person while providing no aid to everyone else in Gotham on dire need of transport and help. But what disappoints me is that all we get here is setup. Batwoman successfully gets the cache and completes her mission, but then she notices the TUCO agents heading inside the church when she was about to leave from the roof. So she decides it’s a better use of her time to fight them than deliver the comms system to the other bat family members. In what situation would that be a good idea? In all honesty she is acting just as bad as the TUCO agents hunting her instead of helping others. But there is one thing that actively made me laugh. When Kate enters the church she puts a mask over the exposed part of her face to block any spores. This immediately reminded me of the batman from New York’s mask, which made me laugh as I realized Jace is probably snug in his bed right now only to wake up the next morning to check the news to see what happened in Gotham. LOL.
