Horn of the Kraken

Rate this book
The sun and moon have been devoured by the cosmic wolves Skoll and Hati. Fimbulwinter has enveloped the world in cold and darkness. Men prey on each other in order to survive. Amid the chaos, in the struggle for the throne, comes a war between brothers.

Hakon, illegitimate heir to the throne of Norveig, has obtained a horn that can summon a terror from the depths of the ocean. This monstrosity has been sinking the vessels of his half-brother, Jarl Erik Bloodaxe. Erik sends a company of untried heroes to infiltrate Hakon’s stronghold, and steal the horn.

As with all things political there are other agendas. Fjorn, the leader of the team, is Erik’s half-brother who could challenge Erik for the throne. Erik's wife Gunnhild is a powerful sorceress with her own ambitions- could her goals derail the heroes?

In life, sometimes a Jarl wins, and other times a Jarl wins.

Solid, entertaining story with a fun cast of characters and a fascinating, wonderfully brought to life setting. Despite its short length, there was great detail and I love how historical accuracy blended with Norse fantasy. The beginning felt a little rushed and be warned, this book is in dire want of both a good proofread and a good format, but if you can look past those, it was a fun book.

Not my cup of tea, but Stephen is really good at creating vivid characters and intricate plots that involve readers. A very enjoyable read.

This was a fun quick read. It comes at you pretty fast with quite the cast of characters, that have an intertwined relationship that leaves you wondering where it’ll go.

This book could have benefited with some pricey 3rd party editing, but without it I could feel the author’s passion in the story.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author years ago and buying the book directly from him at Ad Astra in Toronto. Great guy who clearly loved and believed in his craft. I’m sorry I didn’t read it right away.

Eternal winter grips the land as a group of heroes seek to save their society from those who would enslave the world.
Five heroes in the making come together to stand against the forces that would see their society and their very freedom to choose the path of their immortal souls destroyed. When Hakon, bastard heir to the throne of Norveig, obtains a horn that can summon Kraken like war dogs from his masters in outer Midgard he uses it to sink the vessels of his half-brother Jarl Erik Bloodaxe of Norveig. Desperate to save his ships Erik commands a company of untried heroes to infiltrate Hakon’s stronghold and steal the horn. As with all things political there are other agendas for Fjorn, the leader of the team, is in truth Erik’s unrecognized half-brother with a claim to the throne almost as strong as the Jarl’s. So will Fjorn survive his mission and Erik win the horn or will he journey to Valhalla riding Erik of a threat to his crown. In life sometimes a Jarl wins, and sometimes a Jarl wins
Horn of the Kraken is first and foremost an adventure story based on the Fate of the Norns Ragnarok role playing system. The novel, and game, are set in the eternal dark and cold of Fimbulwinter during the sword age of Ragnarok, the Norse end of days. The novel follows a group of young people as they grow into their power and begin a quest that will transform vengeance into justice for each in their own way. It is a story told in shades of gray where even the most noble will stumble and the most foul with shine. It is a story of man.
Stephen B. Pears says about Horn of the Kraken “Freedom whether it is of speech religion or movement is the freedom to follow your heart, so long as your actions do not actively impinge on another’s freedom. Horn of the Kraken is about the freedom to follow the faith in your heart, to love the Devine however you perceive it, and to stand up for that freedom lest it be torn from you.
