As this sprawling, frothy romance set in 18th-century England and Portugal opens, orphaned 15-year-old Charlotte Vayle falls in love with dashing young adventurer Tom Westig. It is the day when "she first realized what it could be like between a man and a woman." When Charlotte learns that her profligate uncle plans to pay his debts by marrying her off to foppish Lord Pimmerston, she and Westig make a dash for Scotland (where they can be legally wed), but are intercepted by her uncle's men, who throw Tom off a cliff, presumably to his death. Charlotte is then tricked into marriage with the violent, mysterious but sexually charismatic Rowan Keynes and bears him two daughters, the elder closely resembling Tom Westig. Charlotte and Tom meet again in Lisbon but are found out by Keynes; Charlotte is abandoned and Tom, presumably, put to death again. After following the lives of Charlotte's daughters in England, the narrative brings the entire cast to Lisbon for the denouement.
A good old fashioned unrequited love story takes place in England and Portugal in the 1700's. Charlotte Vayle falls in love with Tom Westing but due to her guardian, she is to be married off to an older man to settle her guardian's debts. The lovers run away only to be caught and separated. Their love does not fade but governs their lives sending them to Lisbon and into the arms of other lovers.
WOW! one of the best historical romance sagas I have read in a long time. was very hard to put down. Rowan Rowan I wanted to love you, but they turned you into the devil..jealousy at its best!
In this, her first appearance in hardcover, Valerie Sherwood shifted her attention slightly forward to the middle of the 18th Century and to the wealthy city of Lisbon, Portugal. There, the destinies of the city itself and the family of English Charlotte Vayle intertwine over nearly two decades. Deception, ruthlessness, scheming, desire, star-crossed love and natural disasters animate this family saga. Charlotte is one of Sherwood's most appealing heroines, intelligent and competent and above all, not helpless, despite the truly menacing villains who conspire against her, as is also her daughter Cassandra. The reader will enjoy the twists and turns of the heroines across two generations, which was a strong return to form for Sherwood after her slight and unsatisfying "To Love a Rogue," which recycled tropes from previous novels without their élan. Sadly, for one reason or another, Sherwood never published another historical novel, or indeed, any others under her various pseudonyms, although she lived for another 25 years. Thus, "Lisbon" is an enjoyable, solid--and somewhat bittersweet--capstone to the roughly dozen years of the author's activities as a bestselling historical romance novelist.
A lusty, enthralling, swashbuckling tale of loves lost and found from England to Portugal. The great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 provides an exciting climax to the story.
