I was intrigued to read this book when I found out that the author also wrote the script for the movie "The Wedding Planner". This is her debut novel and while it wasn't the greatest, it was still pretty good.

This novel alternates between "Then" and "Now" chapters which are short snippets of the past (which explains Ellie and Robs backstory) and the present (which is where we get into the real crime thriller elements.

Overall, I enjoyed the thriller aspect of the plot. It was a fun read but not anything exceptionally memorable. I also found myself wanting to skim through Ellie and Rob's backstory. It seemed a little fluffy and unnecessary padding at times to the book.

Earlier this year, I read Nina Sadowsky's newest release, which I enjoyed and prompted me to select one from her previously published list of books. I began with Just Fall, a thriller about a newly married couple in which the wife discovers her husband has a terrifying past. Told in alternating "Then" and "Now" chapters, we learn how the couple met, what the husband has done, and why the wife is now involved in a string of murders with him. Had I read this one first, I'm not sure I would have picked up another book by the author, to be frank. The characters were missing some elements to make us care about them; at first, I liked Ellie but then she quickly goes from lovely woman to a dark, colder person and seems to just trust her husband and go along with his plan to kill someone as a means to get out of the jamb he's gotten them into. Also, confusion plagues the pages while trying to understand who is secretly partnering with whom to get even for some past misdeed. While the various parts of the story didn't come together for me, it did show a very talented writer with a gift for imagination, the ability to create a web of intrigue, and a clever set of ways to kill someone. All the ingredients for a superior mystery author. It may just be that the author needed some more time / input to produce a much stronger novel, like Privacy, which was the first book I read of hers. So... I will pick another from the backlog later this year and see how it all rounds out.

I’m currently addicted to romantic suspense. I can’t get enough lately. It has all the romance I crave without angsty, stupid relationship drama. I enjoy the mystery, twists, action and danger! Just Fall had plenty of danger and thrills, and a delicious romance I was rooting for from beginning to finish.

The story alternates between past and present starting out with a shocking scene in the present, and then working back and forth.

Rob and Ellie meet and fall in love, but both know/suspect there are some secrets to uncover about their pasts. Rob’s are a bit darker than Ellie’s, but hers make it so she can relate to Rob. Neither pushes too hard to discover each other’s secrets, because each has something to hide, but events make it impossible to ignore the past any longer.

I really enjoyed this mystery. It took me a little bit to get into the rhythm of the story, because you’re thrown into the middle of things and have to settle in a bit before it truly takes off. From the beginning I was wholeheartedly on board with Ellie and Rob’s romance. They seemed perfectly matched and supremely in love, and after their disastrous pasts I wanted nothing but happiness for their future. Even though their lives may have been less than moral before, I could understand their choices (sort of?) and make excuses.

I would’ve enjoyed the story a little more if I had more couple time in the present time chapters and if there were maybe not so many twists at the very end.

Imagine, it is your wedding night, the best night of your life and you are over the moon with happiness. What could possibly happen to change this ideal setting?, how about when your new husband leans over and whispers in your ear that he is a killer! What would you do? this is the problem that Ellie is faced with after her husband Rob confesses to her on their wedding night. How far would you go for the one you love? How does this change the way you feel about the love of your life? But in this story Ellie has secrets too and this makes for some interesting reading. I enjoyed this story, it moves fast and the movement of chapters between now and then helps set the scene. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Just Fall by Nina Sadowsky is a romantic psychological debut novel of two damaged, deeply flawed souls seeking love and happiness.
Rob and Ellie are deeply in love and are getting married. On the wedding day Rob confesses to Ellie that he is a killer. Ellie who found Rob after a few unsuccessful romances cannot believe it but she is also hiding some dark secrets of her own. He is then kidnapped from the wedding reception and for Ellie to save him she has to take someone’s life. Thus starts the harrowing ordeal in Ellie’s life where she tries to free and save Rob from his past.
It is an interesting story-line and the chapters alternate between “Now” and “Then”. The “Now” was pretty streamlines but the “Then” part was not in chronological order which took a little bit getting used to. The ending though good was a little rushed and left me with some questions. Overall I would give this book 3 1/2 stars, a good book for light reading with some twists and turns.
Many thanks to the publisher & NetGalley for this advance reader copy in exchange for my honest and fair review.

“I'd learned that some things are best kept secret.”

----Nicholas Sparks

Nina Sadowsky, the American author, pens her debut romantic thriller, Just Fall that narrates the story of a woman who is thrown on the crossroads to judge on whether the man she is in love with and she thinks to be her soulmate, is a criminal or not. Caught in a web of lies and disloyalty, this woman evolves from being a victim to a most-wanted criminal in a foreign land, all in order to find save the life of her lying husband.

Synopsis:

On the night of her wedding to Rob, Ellie’s perfect world suddenly collapses. Her suave, charming, sophisticated husband is not the man she believed him to be. Could he really be a killer?

Ellie is rapidly swept into a lethal vortex of betrayal, lies, and uncertainty: Who is the man she married, really?

And how far will she go to protect him?

From Manhattan to the Caribbean, Rob and Ellie struggle to escape the grip of Rob’s former life - a life his employers are determined to ensnare him in for good.

When faced with a terrible choice—to become a murderess herself to save the man she loves, or to let him die—Ellie’s decision propels her into a whiplash-paced adventure, filled with cinematic twists and a startling sense of unease.

Ellie is marrying the love of her life, the dream man- Rob. But does she know him completely? Is she sure about his identity, about who he claims to be? The night of her wedding to Rob reveals Ellie the bitter truth about Rob's life, his identity and not only that, the darkness reveals that he is a hit man. Will she be able to forgive her husband? Yes she did forgive, but soon life throws more complicated challenges on her way, when she has to decide to become a killer of innocent people in order to save the life of her husband. While the case of missing children hanging on the background, Ellie runs from one hotel to another targeting innocent men in her wake, and leaving a trail of dead bodies. How long will it go on before the police or the criminals block her mission from saving her husband?

Well, the writing of the author is excellent, quite flawless and laced with heart-stopping suspense and tension, that will make the readers glued onto the edges of their seats. The pacing of the book is really fast as the story navigates from past to present. The dialogues changes from being romantic at times to filled with thrills and tension. The story is captivating enough to keep the readers engrossed till the very end. I found this novel to be highly intriguing that is filled with gripping adventures, adrenaline-rushing actions and a sexy love story.

The setting of the story shifts from New York's chic and urban lifestyle to the Caribbean's salty and breezy climate. And the author has captured both the locations quite strikingly even though the backgrounds do not play a major role in the story. The mystery and the suspense is developed tightly without any loose-end s and with very few confusing twists and turns. The story moves in a spiral way, twisting it and puzzling it,as it delves deeper in to Ellie's one mis-adventure to another.

The characters are dark, flawed and very much well-developed. And the author does a brilliant job in peeling their dark layers from the good humanity layer bit-by-bit. The main characters, Rob and Ellie , both are justified with lots of back story, that contemplates with the fact as to why they choose evil or virtuous paths. Ellie is brave and loving and no matter what, she will save her husband. Whereas Rob too is somewhat similar to Ellie, but mostly he tried to protect Ellie all through out the story by lying to her. The supporting characters are also well-structured and keep the story interesting with their demeanor. What I did not like is the characters, all of them, lacked realism.

The love story between Rob and Ellie is sizzling, passionate and quite hot. Feels like reading a seedy romance novel, although the author's main focus from the mystery never changed. There are some really sexy scenes between Rob and Ellie, that are written with both emotions and heat!!

Overall, I loved reading this min d-twisting as well as thrilling romantic suspense. Read it only if you're a fan of romantic thrillers, otherwise, do not bother to read it at all!

Verdict: Hot, enthralling and a completely gripping read!

This debut novel has a bit of everything ... some mystery, a bit of romance, some psychological aspects.

A happy couple, Ellie and Rob, have secrets, especially secrets from each other that haven't come out during the courtship. Moments after saying the ' I Do's' things immediately change and Ellie makes a discovery about her husband... something that turns her world upside down.

The story is told in flashback style, and that's fine. But the aren't told in chronological order. That takes a little getting used to. But the premise of the story is solid... very suspenseful. The ending is fantastic.

If I had one major criticism, it would be that there are so many secondary characters, it's hard to keep track of them all.

I gave it 4 stars -- it did keep me turning pages.

My thanks to the author / Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine / NetGalley who furnished a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Entertaining read, but the characters and plot are lacking.

I'm torn because I was really excited to read Just Fall. The plot sounds intriguing--on her wedding day, Ellie finds out that her new husband, Rob, is a con artist and killer! The story begins with a chapter entitled "Now" (the novel switches back and forth between chapters entitled "Now" and "Then") and the reader meets Ellie who has just murdered a man in St. Lucia. As the novel unfolds, the reader learns the motives behind the murder, which are linked to Ellie's husband Rob.

I got caught up in the notion that the novel was going to be filled with mystery, adventure, and romance. However, I found I didn't care about Ellie or Rob, and it felt the author was trying too hard with the plot twists and the way the chapters were organized.

Sometimes a book is just entertaining enough that you can forgive it for not being particularly good. This is very much a case here, with Sadowsky's debut novel. While first timer as an author, she's no stranger to entertainment industry, things like Lifetime tv and executive producer credit for the Wedding Planner of all things, so you might get an idea of what sort of a book this would be and it'd be a pretty accurate idea. My favorite thrillers are those of psychological variety. This one is maybe of a romantic variety if any. Newlyweds with some homicidal secrets must try to survive a challenging honeymoon in a scenic locale. So the tag line would be Will Their Love Conquer All or something equally cheesy. The story is told through the alternating chapters of NOW and THEN. NOWs are chronological, while THENs jump all over the timeline to presumably develop the characters. They never quite develop into someone particularly likeable, there is something romcom cardboardy about them through and through, but Sadowosky seems to primarily concentrate on the action/suspense part anyway. And so the book is fine for what it is, but never more than that, utterly forgettable sort of a quick read for a not overly choosy reader. Easily imagined as a movie of equally lackluster bland entertainment quality. Thanks Netgalley.

Just Fall is the story of Ellie who marries Rob who turns out to be someone she doesn't really know. But Ellie has a couple of skeletons in the cupboard, too.
Interesting premise for a story. And the story itself wasn't bad. But I didn't particularly enjoy the way it was delivered. It felt like a screenplay at times. Probably not surprising considering the author's background. At the beginning and then again at the end, the author addressed the reader directly. That didn't work for me here.
The story was told by means of alternating short chapters of 'Now' and 'Then', with the 'Now' in chronological order but the 'Then' jumping all over the timeline.
I would just start to get into the story and then it would change to another time or focus on a different character. I ended up reading this in tiny installments thus taking much longer than usual to finish. Not only do we have Rob and Ellie's perspective, but then the perspective of Lucien, a policeman investigating a murder and the disappearance of several young boys, was also introduced. While it wasn't confusing to follow, it just felt disjointed and it stopped me from becoming involved with any of the characters. Well, actually the only one I harbored any feelings for was the poor police guy and what he and his family were going through. I didn't really care about Rob or Ellie. I am still at a loss where the promised "sexy and seductive" was?
While the Now-chapters were quite exciting and I was interested in following that story, the Then-chapters seemed to contain a lot of unnecessary padding. I understand that the author was trying to develop the characters of Rob and Ellie in this manner by giving the readers their histories but I would have preferred if it had been condensed or integrated into the central story.
If it hadn't been for the last 20 or 30% of the book, I would have ended up rating this lower, but the way the story finally played out redeemed it. At least, there were some good twists. Not so much my thing stylistically but an interesting plot.

Just Fall is a dark, mysterious psychological thriller where the characters go to extreme lengths to hide what horrors they are capable of.

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews

Just Fall is a well done psychological thriller where the layers of the story, and the layers of the characters are slowly unpeeled, until only the dark, ugly horror is left for the world to see. Told in several different points of views, and from both the past and the present, the story unfolds in a way that makes it hard to put the book down. At the beginning, it read as something between a love story and a horror story, where one of the main characters, Ellie, is observed by an external narrator who is speculating about what she is doing, and who she is with at a very dark moment.

I loved that there were several sub-plots that happened parallel to the main plot, and there were more than one story-line as well. I was immediately drawn in by Ellie, and her new relationship with Rob. They seemed to be such a normal couple in the beginning, but as their layers were slowly taken away, there was so much more to them than what met the eyes. Just Fall is the kind of mystery and suspense where the dark deeds of the characters are told with a certain detachment, and this detachment makes their actions seem both distant and somehow more gruesome at the same time.

More time was spent with Ellie and her inner thoughts than with the other characters, and that worked really well for me! While Ellie wasn't necessarily the kind of main character I usually fall for, there was something about her that made me want to know her story, understand the reasons behind what she was doing, and her want for love and understanding. As the story unfolded, it became more and more complex, but never to the point of not making sense, and I enjoyed everything that transpired on the beautiful island of St. Lucia.

If you are looking for a slightly muted horror story, where the characters move everything, and where you will be left wondering what is truly going on until the very end, you should pick up Just Fall and see just where it takes you.

Fave Quotes - (un)Conventional Bookviews

The next five years were absorbed by Mary Ann's illness, like a sponge soaking up a rancid spill. Ellie's parents were always at the hospital or seeking out some experimental cure. Ellie's failures, her triumphs, her strivings and dilemmas, went unnoticed because Mary Ann took everything.

Stealth had stuck as a nickname. Ellie liked being called Stealth. It completely suited who she wanted to be in college, a departure from the inherited notoriety that had surrounded her when she was 'the girl whose sister died.' She was seen in her own right and had a cool nickname, one that also spoke to being unseen, which felt like a private little irony.

(SPOILER ALERT AHEAD)

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with this book in return for my honest opinion and review.

I didn’t particularly care for the story, characters or the writing style, but I had to finish just to see what the secrets were. That being said, I’d recommend you don’t waste your time.

This book is all over the place. We have sibling rivalry, dysfunctional families, patricide, spousal abuse, alcoholism, homelessness, hired assassin, child trafficking. We have a pseudo-thriller that wants to be a romance that wants to be a suspense novel. None of the characters are especially likeable or believable. As for Ellie, seriously, I couldn’t believe her. Before walking into their wedding reception, her husband tells her he is an assassin. Then later he tells her she needs to kill someone. So she does. Just like that. She just keeps repeating to herself his words of encouragement that she can do this. Are we to believe there’s going to be a future for these two? Wait until she finds out he killed her best friend’s husband.

The novel’s chapters alternate between Then and Now chapters, each relatively short and each told by a different character. As for the writing style, it begins to grate after a while. The novel is mostly written in short, descriptive sentences, which is a format I’ve been seeing lately that is being used as a means of emphasis. I don’t particularly care for this writing style. The ending was thrown together, all the loose ends being tied up in a few pages. It wasn’t a very effective ending.

Screenwriter, Nina Sadowsky delivers a chilling dark tale of suspense---good versus evil, JUST FALL two damaged people desperately seeking redemption.

The novel opens with a letter from Rob to darling Ellie with instructions, his love, and an “I’m sorry”.

An island. A wedding day. From Manhattan to the Caribbean, they had known each other that long. Secrets. A couple. Bride and Groom. Rob’s admission was sudden, bizarre, terrifying. Insane words. Why?

Flashing back and forth (now and then) readers learn the backstory of Ellie and her husband Rob and the detective.

On the night of her wedding to Rob, Ellie’s perfect fantasy world suddenly collapses. Her charming, sophisticated husband is not the man she believed him to be. Could he really be a killer?

Now, does she have to become a killer in order to save Rob? Love can be deadly. Consequences. People are dying. Accidents. Murders on the island. Boys missing.

From lies, love and betrayal, Sadowsky delivers a fast-paced twisted seductive debut --the lengths one will go to protect.

From psychological suspense, intrigue, and mystery -----with an array of secondary characters, along for the ride to the finale “Next.”

Karşınızda tam bir gerilim kitabı. Buyurun.

Review originally posted at All Books Considered: 3.5 STARS

This books begins with the use of an audience surrogate - don't let this throw you. Most of the book is told in the third person but it was done well and I never had problems with the POV. This one kept me guessing and even though it was dark -- it was also pretty romantic, which sounds like such a dichotomy but worked. The description above is spot on in that this book asks the question of . . . how can you find out that the person you love is a killer…and continue to love him anyway? Along the lines of this question, I thought of Heartsick by Chelsea Cain and You by Caroline Kepnes. While all of these books are written very differently, they all ask that same question. The ending was a bit unsatisfying in that a lot was kind of explained away even though the rest of the story took its time to reveal each and every little thing. But I still really enjoyed this one and it was a fast read -- I started it thinking that it would take me a few days to read and I ended up finishing it the same day!

I really loved the use of intercalary chapters in both of these books -- both books had alternating chapters of past and present, usually short chapters. In both books, this really helped build the suspense while allowing the story to unravel. I thought this was a great technique and executed perfectly in both books.

But then Ellie came along. He walked her home after that first date. Their conversation had rippled and spun, they found humor in the same things, discovered they agreed on all the important basics: Indian food, yes, indies over mainstream movies, coffee as an essential food group. Of course, even as he engaged in the data mining that is part and parcel of early dating, he was aware that he was presenting a fiction, that even to this girl with whom he connected so easily, he must never reveal who he really was. But still. There was something that linked them. By the time they had gotten back to her apartment building, he knew he didn't want to say good night.

Just Fall by Nina Sadowsky is a so-so debut thriller that tells the story by jumping between "Then" and "Now" chapters.

The novel opens with our beautiful, desirable, blond newlywed, Ellie, killing a man. Apparently she needed to kill him to save her dashing but mysterious husband, Rob, who she loves more than is prudent, or certainly beyond common sense, and decency. On their wedding day, immediately after the ceremony, Rob told her that he is a killer. Subsequently, some men showed up at the reception to beat Rob up, take him hostage, and force Elle to kill a man if she wants to see Rob again.

She is sent to St. Lucia to kill the man in the opening. In St. Lucia there are also children who are going missing, which is consuming the thoughts of a local policeman, Lucien, even as he is sent to investigate the man Elle killed. And then more stuff happens now and we learn more about the past of both Rob and Elle.

Elle and Rob are not very sympathetic or engaging characters. This really isn't remedied when we learn more about their past in the "Then" chapters. The character development that does take place never brought me to the point where I cared what happened to these people. In fact, I actually cared less about their well-being. They lacked credibility as characters and were both annoying and unbalanced. What I was curious about was more of Lucien's story and what was happening to the missing boys.

This is a quick read, so you can quickly jump from one absurd plot twist to another. Don't expect a resolution to all the plot elements and be prepared for frequent changes in the points of view as chapters flip back and forth without following any time sequence.

I had a good time with this thriller, but I think it has higher aspirations than it’s able to reach. It’s marketed as a tale of moral ambiguity, purportedly raising profound questions like “How far would you go for love?”, but in execution it never stops feeling like a beach read. If you’re looking for a tawdry little escape, it would be the perfect choice. Not so much if you’re expecting a deep dive into ethics.

Main character Ellie finds out on her wedding night that the man she has just married is not who she thought he was. Turns out he’s a bad, bad man who’s done bad, bad things, and now the only way they can stay together (and alive) is if she does bad, bad things too. Far-fetched, you say? You bet it is, and if you struggle with suspending your disbelief, well, get out now. If you can accept the premise, though, and the increasingly wild curveballs Sadowsky throws, Just Fall is a dirty, fun ride.

With regards to Ballantine Books and Netgalley for the review copy. On sale now!

Thank you to NetGalley.com and to the publisher for the ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Similar to Gone Girl, yet completely different – I could not put this book down. Okay – so I can’t put a lot of books down, but I did stay up late to finish this one because I just had to see how it ended. The ending – did NOT see any of that coming!!

What I loved: The way the novel flowed from the past to the present and back again after evey chapter helped build suspense while enlightening the reader to the core qualities of the two main characters, Ellie and Rob – both the good and the bad.

What I didn’t love: There are some aspects that are pretty disturbing, but nothing that I didn’t love.

What I learned: Do you REALLY know the person you married?

Overall Grade: B+

From the moment I opened the pages of this book, there was no looking away. Like the proverbial train wreck, there was a need to see it all.

Back and forth from past to present, the author lays it all out there, the whys for every decision made, for each action taken.

I couldn't look away till the final page was read and I could finally breathe again. And I could remind myself that it was just fiction - a rip roaring tale of psychological suspense that definitely messed with my head and left me reeling and I enjoyed every minute.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read the arc of this book.

The writing really drove me crazy at first. The author would begin a paragraph with "Later." What is that? I understand she's a screenwriter, but this isn't a screenplay. It's a book.

The book got better (or the writing grew on me) and was a quick read. But the ending. OMG, the ending. It just doesn't make sense. Spoiler alert: the ending. doesn't. make. sense.

I can definitely see this book made into a movie. The author description on the books jacket says Nina (the author) has written several screen plays so maybe that is why this books lends itself to a movie script.

Ellie starts out as a soft romantic but as the book progresses she becomes one tough cookie. What could be better than romance on a tropical island ????

I thought this was a bit better than just ok but I can't honestly say that by the end, I strongly liked it. The story of Ellie & Rob being told by two threads in alternating chapters titled "Then" and "Now" felt tedious. I admit to being far more interested in the Now and I was also just annoyed that the Then felt disjointed and didn't even always pick up where the prior Then, ended. The summary definitely drew me in and more than anything was what kept me turning the pages so that's to the good. I was completely put off by the reveal of Quinn's relationship to Rob and truly feel that this is the point where the story fell short for me. I did like how Lucien's thread tied into Ellie and Rob's main one but I ultimately felt that the reader is supposed to empathize with Rob's plight but I didn't. I never felt that he was deeply rendered enough as a person for me to care, let alone, empathize. This of course never made me see what Ellie was going to the lengths she did. I hate to say that given the summary, I thought this story would have been different & I felt a bit of disappointment.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Many thanks to Netgalley.

What do you do when you find out the man you've built a life with ends up being nothing but a stranger? Would you kill to keep that fantasy alive? The night of her wedding, Ellie discovers Rob's secret and it puts everything she thought she knew about him into question. Just Fall is a convoluted tale that switches between past and present, and non-linearly as well. In its attempts to keep you in the dark from the truth facts of the mystery, it only succeeds in being confusing and frustrating rather than intriguing and enticing. The past and present chapters and the anticipated shocker of an ending truly only works when the reader is given breadcrumbs along the way. When that doesn't occur, and in this case it did not, the supposed shocker ends up leaping out of nowhere and stupefying the reader.
