Vision for Life, Revised Edition: Ten Steps to Natural Eyesight Improvement

Rate this book
All parts of the body need exercise for optimal health, and the eyes are no different.  Vision for Life presents an approach to eye health for people with 20/20 vision who wish to maintain their perfect vision as well as people who see poorly and would like to improve their eyesight.

Clients of the Meir Schneider Self-Healing Method experience their own capacity to bring about recovery, reversing the progress of a wide range of degenerative conditions including eye disease. Based in part on the established Bates Method of eyesight improvement and in part on his own professional and personal discoveries, Meir Schneider's pioneering approach has helped thousands of people successfully treat a host of eye problems, including near- and farsightedness, astigmatism, lazy eye, double vision, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, and nystagmus. This revised edition includes a new chapter on children's eye health and new research and exercises for specific conditions, i.e., glaucoma and nystagmus, near- and farsightedness.

Born blind to deaf parents, Schneider underwent a series of painful operations as a young child and was left with 99 percent scar tissue on the lenses of his eyes, resulting in his being declared incurably blind. At the age of seventeen, he discovered how to improve his vision from less than 1 percent to 55 percent of normal vision with the eye exercises presented in this book. Today Schneider drives a car, reads, and enjoys the benefits of full natural vision. He and his clients prove time and time again how much vision can improve with exercise. His contributions to the field of self-healing are recognized by alternative health practitioners and medical doctors alike.

In Vision for Life , Schneider shares forty years of discoveries made on his personal and professional journey. The book details simple but effective techniques to gain great vision such as sunning and palming. Such exercises are not only strengthening but also restorative and deeply relaxing. The reader learns how to reverse developing issues before they cause damage or to remedy existing problems, including pathologies such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and optic nerve neuropathy.

Not truly Dr. Bates' Method, some good, too much wrong. But, I did learn some things.

This review is for this book and his past books. Meir's directions in his books (along with a few different doctors) helped heal a neck, spine injury;

I have used Natural Eyesight Improvement for 38 years and it kept my eyesight clear. My main, favorite teachers I have learned from are, in historical order; Ophthalmologist William H. Bates, Margaret Corbett, Harold Peppard, William MacCracken, Clara Hackett and other old time teachers from the early and later 1900's, Aldous Huxley, Janet and Carina Goodrich, John Ott and other 'healthy sunlight' teachers, Thomas R. Quackenbush (my favorite, best natural vision teacher), left and right brain hemisphere activation-integration teachers.

Massage, movement... techniques can go well with Natural Vision Improvement but after reading this book it seems Meir does not know everything, and many things he teaches are directly against muscle relaxation, correct movement and function with the eyes, vision.

The nerves, circulation, muscles along the spine, NECK, shoulders, back, entire body CAN effect the eyesight!

Here is my experience and how Natural Vision Improvement, Meir's movement, postures... helped my condition;

In Oct., 2009 I was injured by 2 dishonest chiropractors; they placed 4 vertebrae in my neck; C-1, 2, 4, 6 and more in the shoulder area, T-1.., back and hips out of alignment, 'on purpose' then said I will never be cured, I must stay with them for life and start with 240 treatments.

The neck, spine injury caused by the chiropractors resulted in; vertigo, double vision, astigmatism, a wandering, slow left eye. Many nights I would wake up with vertigo or dizziness, a stiff neck and almost completely blind, 'everything white', black lines, big black spots in the visual field different from harmless floaters. Extreme difficulty walking, lifting. It was 2 years of living torture physically, mentally and emotionally. A life of daily, nightly fear and no doctors could or would help. I was in the hospital three times in Worcester, MA, U-Mass Memorial with vertigo. Many of the symptoms were similar to stroke experienced by other people that were treated incorrectly by chiropractors. See YouTube videos on 'Chiropractic Stroke'.

I searched for a honest doctor. Many refused to help me; they were afraid to get involved and afraid re-aligning, correcting the bones might cause more injury, stroke... A few lied, said they will treat me, then they did not show up for the appointment, they hid in the back office.

I had to find home treatments and do it myself. I started with Meirs books on movement. A couple of the postures, movements helped to start to realign my neck and spine naturally without a chiropractor. With more investigation, finding massage and physical therapy doctors... I kept getting those good, normal pops, 'balanced' on the left and right sides of the lower back/hip area and the upper spine, neck. When I got the lower back/hip area to pop, move into place; for the first time in ages I could walk to the grocery store, bend without falling or losing balance. Something that was 'stuck, locked' that the chiropractors placed out of alignment, was now 'unstuck' and movement returned. I also used a few other Physical Therapy, Home Chiropractic alternative do it yourself books, kits and my usual eyesight books.

I finally found a honest medical doctor and his P.T. that completed the treatment, corrected the neck, spine as best as can be repaired, mainly with anti-inflammatory advice. (I would not take drugs so used a more natural product). They were able to find some neck, back vertebrae that were mis-aligned but did not do x-rays so they missed other major mis-alignments, injuries and never did treatment to align any of the bones.

One honest chiropractor I found after about 2 years search took x-rays and found all the mis-alignments, injuries (injuries that showed in x-rays. X-rays do not show cartilage... damage) the dishonest chiropractors caused and corrected them (I could not completely correct all the injuries on my own) but this also caused some vertigo to return so follow-up treatments could not be done due to the nerve, cartilage, muscle... injuries, some which may never be fully healed.

Meirs movement book, the other eyesight teachers, therapists books and the honest doctors restored the balance, other health problems and the vision. I continue to use the other doctors spine postures, movements and massage to keep the bones aligned and muscles relaxed, strong. Natural Eyesight, Vision Improvement restored the eyesight to 20/20 and clearer on the eyechart. I am grateful for this. But I did not use Natural Eyesight from Meir's books. I have studied this subject since high school, 30+ yrs. by first reading; The Art of Seeing by Aldous Huxley.

I disagree with alot of Meir's practices;

First I want to note Meir does have a few of Dr. Bates' practices in his book, but he's teaching a lot of them wrong. Some are not the Bates Method.

Palming should be done with the hands fingers crossed on the forehead, and a certain way, to take away tension in the shoulders, neck, head that occurs when done without crossing. Meir advises palming without crossing. Strange that a person supposed to be expert on relaxation, movement, muscles... teaches this wrong, a way that causes tension, the very thing palming is supposed to relieve.

Meir spends a large part of his training going directly against, opposite of Dr. Bates #1 practice of using the central vision! Meir is constantly telling people to block their central field, to cover it with a black paper and often when using one or both eyes; he says to keep your mind, visual attention on only the peripheral or the peripheral and central. This is diffusion, eccentric fixation and it causes great strain, tension in the visual system and unclear vision. Lack of central-fixation causes macula degeneration, glaucoma, blur, astigmatism... (Did he mention to be careful of paper cuts on the eye, cornea when using his black paper method?)

Dr. Bates taught that using the central vision (central-fixation or centralization) and shifting, relaxation improves the central AND peripheral vision to optimum function, prevents glaucoma and other eye-vision problems. We MUST use the central vision to see best, (except at night in very dim light when the cones in the central field shut off and only the rods in the periphery function. The military taught us this.) When we use the central field (central-fixation), the brain, eyes automatically pick up the peripheral too. You don't have to mentally, visually focus on the peripheral, constantly stimulating it... That is unnatural.
I strongly disagree with the 'black paper blocking the eyes central field' exercise Meir teaches. Using a eye patch to cover one eye to improve vision in a less clear vision eye is a good practice but blocking the central field so the eyes or eye uses only the peripheral is not healthy. Trying to see objects in the peripheral clear, as clear as vision in the central impairs the vision. Using only the peripheral or focusing on the peripheral and central to see a object with (when the central is functioning in light) can impair the vision.

(Noticing movement, or a object you might decide to look at in the peripheral, then turning to 'look directly at the object', placing it in the 'central' is normal, healthy.) The eyes, head naturally turn to look directly at an object sensed in the peripheral; eyes, head turn to place the object in the 'central field' which is the most clear area of the visual field due to many cones in the center of the retina, macula-fovea which produce very clear vision and bright color. Rods produce less clear vision, only grey, black... color and exist mainly in the peripheral. There are less cones in the peripheral and none in the far outer area of the retina. There are no rods in the exact center of the retina-fovea.
In the book Meir states to keep the eyes, mind on the central and the peripheral at the same time. This is completely opposite of Dr. Bates teaching. It causes tension, strain and unclear vision. People that have cataract, macular degeneration, extreme blur develop the incorrect habit of using the peripheral to see with. This causes more impairment of vision and the eyes health.

Central-fixation (centralization) is combined with shifting. These are the foundation of the Bates method. Learn these and you will not need to pay hundreds, thousands of dollars for 'high priced teachers seminars, multi levels of training'. These teachers hide Dr. Bates true method so they can charge high prices, keep you coming back for endless treatment. They use Dr. Bates name but then teach his method wrong and hide his free public domain books, magazines so the public cannot learn for free, obtain clear eyesight, healthy eyes in a easy, effortless manner.

Learning central-fixation, the correct use of the central vision with movement 'relaxed eye shifting' as Dr. Bates originally taught keeps the central and peripheral at optimum clarity, the eyes remain healthy.

(I wish these expensive teachers would give free training for the blind, low vision people. Not many do that except occasionally when they are 'using the person' to advertise, bring in sales. I challenge the high priced teachers to go into the homes of the poor, the blind and help them for free. Many wealthy vision teachers could easily travel to do this, but they refuse. They travel the world teaching but always for a high price to the student. They constantly turn down requests for help from the blind, semi-blind because these blind people are often on disability, have little money.)

I like Meir's movement book better than the eyesight books. For eyesight, I keep the few things Meir teaches that are beneficial and avoid the rest.
I stay with Ophthalmologist Bates true original method and my original teacher's school and books.

Sorry Meir but this is the truth. I even noticed a few movements... in the book that could misalign the neck vertebrae. Holding one eyelid down when blinking is abnormal, impairs the left, right eye's function. I am glad I did not do any other exercises in the movement book except for the spine twist. Even then, I had to alter with a couple doctors advice. That, along with refining it with other teachers, doctors information helped correct the neck, spine injury. So thanks for giving me the idea to seek an alternative to chiropractic.

Please give more credit to Dr. Bates, study his true method and place it in your books, school. The Alexander Technique by F, M. Alexander and Feldenkrais would be a good combination.

O primeiro aspecto que me fez sentir desconfortável é o tom do autor.

Good book, I found some ideas and exercise I need to apply. But to know if it is valuable or not I have to first apply the exercises for a while. Still, I found a few good advices here. So it's worth reading it.

Sadly, I had not realized that Mr. Schneider wasn't a medical professional and instead is putting forth theories rather than grounded result-proven strategies. While I imagine he is very inspirational and motivational, I was getting the feeling reading through that the positive results might have had more to do with the individuals and their own drives creating 'miracles' rather than the actual steps themselves (read: the placebo effect).

More worrisome, however, is that Mr. Schneider is very disdainful of the medical profession and any kind of surgery, glasses, or treatments. Most of the 'treatments' in the book involve studying something or throwing a ball with a black band covering an eye, separating eyes, covering partial objects, etc. He shares some of the cases he found success with at the School for Self-Healing.

For those curious to try self help/homeopathy, why not? Otherwise, there are great books out there focusing on diet and other proven means to help prevent/slow issues such as macular degeneration. Kudos to Mr. Schneider for turning a debilitating illness around and regaining some of his eyesight, though.

I like Meir's ideas. But this book is far from perfect!

i have eye floaters since maybe age 13 or 14 but in recent 4 years (I'm 31 now) they have increased to be very disturbing.

The medical profession will tell you most people have floaters as they age and its because of that - aging.

But I disagree - i most likely developed them from staying too much inside in dark rooms and from using the PC screen too much, also from just looking too much from near (books, TV, etc.). Although I would say that the killers are PC, phone screens and darkness.

He has a section on eye floaters and how to fight them. Basically his advice is to look at them one by one in a sunny day but this is complete nonsense to me! :(

Eye floaters are dead proteins in the vitreous.

And how on earth can you remove them just by looking at them?

In one of his videos he says that the gel replaces slowly - like every 6 months or so. Could be, but that time has passed so many times for me and I still see the same old, same old eye floater shapes in my eyes.

So...

How to remove the floaters?

We need some real-world methods proven, researched, etc.

When people don't have eye floaters they take their eyes for granted but what to do for us who has this very, very disturbing and on occasions life threatening (for example, when driving) floaters/ shadows in their field of vision?

Otherwise a good book, I give it 4 stars because of the promises, but a cure for eye floaters would make it more than 5/5 stars!

Hope Meir Schneider finds my message and does some deep research on eye floaters.

After having a recent scare to do with my eyes I began to read a lot around natural healing for eyes, and this gem of a book was the stand out for me. The information in this book is extremely comprehensive, and there is stuff in here that you won't find anywhere else.

I sensed that a lot of my eye issues were due to decades of carrying lots of tension in my eyes, and this was basically the only book that addressed this elephant in the room. While most information sources go on about short and long sightedness, I found info here on Presbyopia.

This is a condition where you freeze / carry tension in your eyes, which causes long term damage. So I found lots of great information, and everything else I needed to know to look after my sight for years to come from this book.

The writer is incredibly passionate about the subject due to his personal experiences with vision loss, it is clear this is his life's work and the knowledge and effort he's put into healing himself and sharing his knowledge with others is amazing.

My only criticism is that the book has been poorly edited and is not organised well. In addition Schneider's passion means that he expects readers to spend hours each day doing eye exercises, and this is not practical or realistic. As the information is of such great quality though, I worked around this.

It took me some time to work through this book. While it offers useful exercises and tips, the layout isn’t my favorite—there’s just too much dense text to get through. The author’s story is inspiring, and I can tell that he's most likely a lovely man. He went from legal blindness to driving a car.

Half of the book focuses on the negative side of stress and the importance of happiness. The other half offers tips and eye exercises. Many of the exercises are not realistic for me, and I would imagine that being the case for many. Effective, probably, but am I really going to do them? Not likely? When it comes to actual exercises, I prefer this book.

I bought this book because I thought it can help with my miopia. I fallowed exercises for a month - no any result. Author do not provide any evidence that his exercises to cure miopia works. He instructs to do exercises every day for an hour and claims that can decrease miopia by 1 diopthria after 1 year. To spend so much time for unclear results - I do not think it is a good investment of your time. My ophthalmologist said you can not heal miopia with exercises. I am very happy that finally I get rid of miopia by eye laser correction and did not wasted nore my time with these weird exercises.

My first thought was, is it psuedoscience? But he doesn't even try to claim it's scientific. He offers himself as the case study of a man going from legally blind to legally able to obtain a driver's license and drive a car. Half of the book is about the importance of happiness, the deleterious effects of stress, listening to your body and believing in yourself. The other half are eye exercises.

If you can subscribe to the notion of visual plasticity (not so unfamiliar from neural plasticity), then the formula is not unlike any other kind of physical therapy. Gradually minimize the use of crutches, so your limbs can gradually get stronger. Your body adjusts. It makes sense.

But is it pseudoscience? Half of it, probably. Still that, that doesn't disqualify the book; that just means it hasn't been proven. But so much of it is common sense, once you've realized what you already know it just being dictated back to you, in an alternate easy-to-consume dumbed down form;

1. You need the full spectrum of darkness and lightness, so your iris muscles can have full range of contraction and expansion movements.
2. Sunglasses and eyeglasses prevent full engagement of muscle movement, and over time your brain suppresses unnecessary muscle activity. Don't use it and use lose it.
3. Stress prevents relaxation of muscles, which affects eyesight performance.

Most authors of self-help books come off as either celebrity guru types or alpha-male ex-military types. He comes off as very humble and genuine, like a "I've done it and I'd like to help you out" kind of a guy.

"How To Do the Long Swing:

Stand with your legs slightly more than hip width apart, and your knees slightly bent. Hold your index finger about one foot in front of your face, pointing up to the ceiling. Look at your finger with a soft gaze. ... While looking at your finger, swing your body from side to side. As you swing to the right, twist your body so that your left heel rises slightly off the ground. ... If your hand becomes tired, you can switch hands. Do this at least twenty times."

Skaičiau tik dalis, kurios man buvo aktualios. Kiek tiesos visoje programoje, sunku pasakyti, tačiau pamėginis blogiau tikrai nebus!

Knyga parašyta pakankamai lengvai, tačiau labai atsibodo pasikartojimai ir įtikinėjas, jog tikrai viskas veikia. Užtenka tai paminėti kartą. Juk rezultatai kalba patys už save.

There are many books and programs available to assist people in improving their vision naturally. As a person who has worn minus lenses for nearsightedness for almost fifty years, I definitely have a strong desire to at least improve my vision, and in an ideal world to reach the point where I could be able to take my glasses off permanently. While the latter goal might not be realistic at my age, based on reading this book I have no doubt whatsoever that Meir Schneider has provided all the tools necessary for me to at least reduce my prescription by more than just a nominal amount.

The reality is, who better to teach natural vision improvement than Meir Schneider, a man who actually was legally blind at one point, and who now has an unrestricted driver's license in California? Meir's personal story is very inspirational to say the least, and it clearly demonstrates that traditional ophthalmologists and optometrists, those who unquestionably believe that eyesight cannot improve without corrective lenses or laser surgery, are just flat out misinformed.

In addition to his own personal experience, throughout this book Schneider cites examples of people who have applied his prescribed exercises and experienced significant improvements in their visual skills. Is it easy, no, it's not; just like training one's legs for a marathon, training the eyes to see better requires a commitment to regularly completing the eye exercises recommended in the book, and to opening one's mind to understand that vision is more than just eyes capturing light and sending images to the brain. There is an emotional component to vision quality as well, and the impact of that component on a person's daily view of the world should not be understated.

Some might say this is just another program based on the Bates eye method, and there is some truth to that. However, in my view what differentiates this work is the author's undeniable passion for his subject, and his unwavering position that everyone who has less than desirable vision has the ability to remedy that problem if they would just be willing to make the commitment to do so. I for one will be applying Meir's teachings in my life, and I look forward to "seeing" the results of the effort in the form of a reduced prescription and healthier eyes.

I was very excited to read this book.

It was well written and engaging.

But after reading other reports on the topic, it seems to me a heap of wishful thinking. With very few exceptions people who invest the time into this do not only not have miracle results, the usually have no results, beyond subjectively feeling better.

Like many alternative theories, this is based on some untested but testable assumptions.

Like many alternative theories this book simultaneously seeks to show how it is better than medical science and also does not hesitate to show any areas in which standard medical science validates it.

I was very enthusiastic after reading this and then extremely disappointed after reading about the subject from other sources.

Neumim ohodnotit prinosy cviceni, nebot jsem je nezkusil. Nevim, jestli jde o docasne ci dlouhodobe efekty.
