I loved being back in the Moonlight Dragon world and this story was perfect. Katara is so relatable. She takes care of everyone, has the least of everything, doesn’t know her worth and then she is given to the dragons as a bargaining chip. But they aren’t what she supposes. Her arc was so fun to watch. And the dragons? They are best friends, loyal to each other. And so different from each other. The banter is fantastic. And when things heat up? They truly heat up. This is delightfully cozy and spicy.

Dragons? Magic? Love? You got me!

Sorry to say, but once again the general idea was better than the actual story. My main concern are the inconsistencies and plot issues. Not to spoil, but Rory's very fast change of hearts about his hostage was completely unjustified and as a result seemed forced.
There were many similar problems during the whole book. The stupidity of Katara's family was too obvious and our dragon shifters had to be double oblivious not to see that her father won't meet his half of the deal.

Physical and emotional relationships occured just like that (at least in one case) - no building it at all. I know that not every story must be a slow burn but hey, let's give the characters a chance to have a little something first!

You will enjoy this story if you like lot of lemons, even if they are not necessarily very explicit.

I got a free copy as an ARC reader and I am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.

I wanted to like this book because the overall concept sounded promising, but unfortunately, the execution fell short. The story was plagued by plot inconsistencies, character logic issues, and pacing problems throughout.

What didn't work for me:

Forced Romance & Consent Tropes: Rory’s turnaround regarding Katara happened way too fast—without any real character development to back it up, his shift in feelings felt completely artificial and forced, especially with his so called background. Moreover, Kat intimacy with the dragons made no sense given her fear that they might kill her if they didn’t get their gold. While the book heavily emphasised consent—to the point of feeling cliché—it felt contradictory when she was giving consent to creatures she was actively terrified of.

Unbelievable Logic & Character Behaviours: The stupidity of Kat's family is hard to swallow, especially since the dragon shifters come off as entirely clueless for believing her father's deal. Adding to the frustration, her toxic sister's sudden personality shift is purely transactional—she only 'changes' for expensive gifts—yet no one in the story bats an eye or call her on the attitude.

Spicy Scenes over Plot: The book clearly prioritises smut over a cohesive plot, but the explicit scenes felt unrealistic—even within a fantasy framework—and repeatedly halted what little narrative momentum existed. The physical recovery aspect was particularly absurd: Kat is in her thirties, yet after intense encounters, she’s supposedly sore in the morning only to effortlessly pull off a full evening shift baking and working at the tavern. At her age, that level of stamina and sudden recovery just doesn't feel believable, making the pacing and realism fall apart even further.

Rushed Ending: The vampire reveal felt painfully obvious, and the climax—including the resolution with the angry mob—was wrapped up far too quickly and conveniently. The author clearly wanted to finish up more smut and tie everything up neatly for a 'happy ending'.

Minimal sensory details—relies almost entirely on exposition rather than rich, immersive description.

Overall, the idea was much better than the actual story. It needed stronger character development, better pacing, and more logical plot progression.

Description:
Continue the romantic adventures in this MMF Why Choose STANDALONE addition to the Moonlight Dragon world.
Katara, who has just turned thirty, is tired of caring for her family and being treated like an unpaid servant. And yet, to save her sister's life, she (begrudgingly) agrees to take her sister's place as a tribute to the dragons who have been protecting the village of Far Winds from vampire attacks.
Rory and Bale, a pair of dangerous dragons who were too feral to live within a clan, are not prepared for the trouble Katara (a simple human) brings into their lives.

My opinion:
I enjoyed this novel overall, especially the unique storyline. The book was fast-paced and it was a good length. I have always loved Dorothy McFalls' books; however, this novel was too over the top for me in certain aspects. There were parts I definitely had to skip over. There were trigger warnings; I just wish they would have been more in-depth.

Katara is not your usual romance heroine. She's in her thirties, she's spent years doing every job in her father's house with no thanks, and the whole village treats her like bad luck. What I enjoyed most was watching her slowly stop apologizing for taking up space.

The two dragons could not be more different. One is all sharp words and complaints about money. The other barely speaks, wears gloves all the time, and notices things nobody else does. He was my favorite from his first scene. Their friendship with each other matters as much as their bond with her, and that gave the romance more weight than I expected.

There's a lot of small, cozy stuff too. Bowls of stew, a tavern roof that leaks at the worst moments, and a tiny kitten who seems to have a personal problem with one very big dragon 😂

Before you start, good to know that it's a quick, heat forward read rather than a slow burn, and the romance gets most of the page time over the vampire side of the story. If that's what you're in the mood for, you'll have a great time. I finished it wishing I could spend a few more chapters with these three.

A warm, steamy read for anyone who has been the dependable one and wondered when it would be their turn.

ARC Review

This was such a fun and enjoyable read!

A MMF why-choose fantasy romance featuring shapeshifting dragons and forced proximity? Yes, please!

I had a really good time reading this book. It was light, fun, and easy to get into, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

I usually prefer fantasy series over standalone novels because I love getting to go on a long journey, really immersing myself in the world, getting attached to the characters, and watching the plot unfold over multiple books. So, standalone fantasy isn’t normally my first choice.

But this book reminded me that sometimes you don’t need a huge, complicated fantasy world or an epic, drawn-out adventure. Sometimes you just want a quick, entertaining read that you can sit back and enjoy, and this definitely delivered!

If you’re looking for a fun, light fantasy romance with dragons, forced proximity, and why-choose vibes, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Given away!

Katara’s father made a deal with the dragons. Gold to protect their village. But he squandered all the gold. Now the dragons want their payment. To save himself, he offers one of his daughters as a hostage. Not the pretty one. They can take the one he treats like a servant: the one the whole village hates.

Rory and Bale rid the village of vampires in return for gold. Now the village chief’s daughter is their hostage until the village chief pays them. Then they will give her back. The problem is that they may not want to.

This is the first book I have read in this series. Now I definitely want to read the rest of them! Exciting adventure and danger, excellent steam rating. I received an advance copy, but my review is honest and voluntary.

Can you really enchant grumpy dragons? I guess Katara is about to find out.
Katara the village chief’s daughter has been taking care of her family and is treated like a servant.
She agrees to take her sister’s place living with the dragons that have been protecting the village from vampire attacks. Her father made a deal with the dragons , but does not have the gold to pay them.
Fantasy , romance, dragons

I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it.

I loved this book, the character of Katara was such an elder daughter in the way she took care of everyone and everything and never expected to be taken care of in return - it was a great storyline to see her get what she needed through the relationship with the dragons. I enjoyed the bit of mystery surrounding the vampire arc as well.

Dragons, and Vampires, and Humans, oh my!

Rory, Bale, and Katara make a beautiful group.
The story has a little spice, background, and plot. It's a new take on Dragon/Human relationships.

Definitely worth the read!

I love Dorothy’s writing and her spicy books are no exception. A woman considered ugly by the humans is given to the dragons in exchange for a large loan. Strong Cinderella vibes, but definitely better. Her father is despicable (versus Cinderella’s own father), but that’s not what makes this far better than the fairytales of our childhood. No, no. It’s the dragons. They’re sexy, hot, and when they get past themselves, the chemistry is off the charts. I loved all of these characters. They’re distinct with clear motives and desires.
