When investigative journalist Annabelle Carlyle’s best friend disappears, she goes undercover in Charleston to search for answers. And before she finds a single clue, she runs into a sexy man she can't shake.
Tall, dark and charming, Mark Dering is happy to show the gorgeous Yankee his hometown. He's captivated by the quick witted, quick tempered redhead. But when they're shot at, he realizes she's far more than just another tourist. Soon they're knee deep in a mystery that goes all the way back to the Civil War.
It isn't long before romance blooms right alongside the magnolias. And the stakes grow higher when a body is discovered. Someone is killing to keep a century old Confederate secret hidden. With her best friend missing and a killer on the loose, it's the worst possible moment for Mark to try and unlock Annabelle's heart. Or is love exactly what her life's been missing?

USA TODAY bestselling author Christi Barth earned a Masters degree in vocal performance and embarked upon a career on the stage. A love of romance then drew her to wedding planning. Ultimately she succumbed to her lifelong love of books and now writes award-winning contemporary romance, including the Naked Men and Aisle Bound series.
Christi can always be found either whipping up gourmet meals (for fun, honest!) or with her nose in a book. She lives in Maryland with the best husband in the world.
There is a lot to enjoy about Carolina Heat, a story of essentially love at first sight.
Annabelle goes off to Charleston, South Carolina to search for her missing friend Vanessa and her boss' brother in law. At the airport, she runs into Mark, literally. He offers to share a taxi, and due to the lateness of the hour she arrived in Charleston, Annabelle agrees.
Throughout her stay in Charleston, Annabelle uncovers many different things that begin to explain why her friend and boss' brother in law disappeared. With the help of Mark and his friends, Ashby and Jillian, she comes to the bottom of the mystery; despite the danger they are all in as a result of the uncovered secret.
I give Carolina Heat three and a half Tea Cups and a heat rating of two. Carolina Heat was very well written and I enjoyed it very much. The sex is not too graphic, so it's suitable for all readers. I would read Carolina Heat again, and I would love to read another story featuring Mark, Annabelle, Ashby and Jillian.
Fascinating, well written mystery, adventure story. Well developed and interesting characters. I highly recommend this book. (My copy unfortunately was mussing a number of chapters)

Ms Barth takes us to the beautiful Southern city of Charleston, where history is everywhere and the Southern hospitality prevails, or does it ? Annabelle is an investigative reporter sent to Charleston disguised as a travel writer to find out what has happened to a man visiting the city. Add to it the recent disappearance in the same city, of her friend Vanessa, the plot thickens. Of course , we have a handsome native of Charleston, Mark, who is smitten by her. Annabelle too is attracted to him and together they start their amateur detective work. If you enjoy a good mystery, with romance and the beautiful City of Charleston, you are sure to enjoy this book.
Totally enjoyed this romantic suspense by Christi Barth! Loved the main characters, and the setting (Charleston), which the author makes great use of. Despite investigating disappearances and being shot at, it's got more of a whodunit feel than many of the darker RS's I read, which was fun and different. Supporting cast is great too, from the hero's pack of friends to the bed and breakfast owner that takes the heroine under her wing. Barth is an author I'll continue to follow!
Annabelle Carlyle is a woman on a mission. An investigative reporter, she finds herself in Charleston, SC working undercover to find out what happened to her best friend, Vanessa, and museum manager, Tad Thornton. Both have been missing for weeks and the Charleston PD have been little help.
A misstep has Annabelle literally falling into the arms of the handsome Mark Dering, a professional researcher. Sparks fly and it's not long before she finds herself mixing business with pleasure so to speak.
This was my first read from Christi Barth and I really enjoyed it. For starters, I loved this was a romantic suspense as it combines two of my favorites -mysteries and romance- into one. I loved all of the characters. Although Annabelle and Mark are the main couple in this book, I found myself wishing I have gotten to know Ashby and Jillian a little more.
I'm actually bummed that they didn't get spinoff book as I feel like their relationship status was left unresolved in this book. Also, this isn't one of those mysteries where you have to wait until the end of the book to find out who the killer is. It's actually indirectly revealed a bit after the halfway point for readers. I actually thought it was funny that Annabelle didn't realize who the killer was until it was almost too late.
For an investigative reporter, I thought she would have been better at solving this mystery than she was, especially after her conversation with the FedEx guy. I think it was at this point that I really started to question how good her investigating skills were. Overall, this was a solid 3-star read for me and I'm definitely interested in reading more from Barth.
I enjoyed this book, but wasn’t wowed by it. The main characters both seem to get mad at the drop of a hat for most of the book. The investigative story was interesting, but I felt it was wrapped up a little too quickly at the end. I would have liked more details on what happed to the heroine’s best friend and a little more explanation for why the crime was committed. I thought the hero and heroine were perfect for each other, and loved his friends and her brother who joined the team in investigating the story. I would read other books by this author in the future.
The story started slow but built up quite well. But the editing was a large distraction. Duplicate chapters. Bits and pieces of chapters repeated in the chapters.
Very good book! Barth holds readers attention well and knows when to throw a wrench in to the mix. Only dproblem was...several chapters were repeated! I would be so engrossed in what was happening...that I wondered..wait..didn't I just read this???
DNF ........I tried, I made it all the way to chapter 16 but I could not take it anymore. It was so boring, the characters had nothing in common and I was completely fed up with how Annabelle was constantly offended by everything. She acted more like a child than an investigative reporter.
