Shadow of Understanding

Rate this book
Military Brat. Student. Athlete. Officer. Murderer. Government Assassin. And now Private Detective. All the roles I have played in my life like an actor on stage. Even my name, Gabriel McBane, is another fictional character. As my vitality begins to dwindle, is the world done with me? With old enemies returning and choices made coming back to haunt me, something I never expected arises from below to show that evil still lurks in our darkest dreams. Having just a shadow of understanding, can I confront the beast and show that even immortals should fear the hunter in the night?

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I’m so glad I took the time to read it. I don’t usually write reviews but I’d love this book to find more readers. I was pleasantly surprised to find it had a little bit or everything for the typical fiction reader. There was action, mystery, suspense, sci-fi, and even a little romance. Combining these genres could be overwhelming to the reader but the author does a wonderful job of keeping everything seamlessly connected to the plot and it all works together so well. The characters are complex and the story thoroughly intriguing as told through multiple perspectives. I was hooked early into the book and found myself staying engaged wondering what would come next. I’m looking forward to more of these characters in the next book and to learn what adventures await. Great book!

I had no idea what to expect from this book, but I was delightfully surprised with the story and characters. I must admit, I peeked at the reviews already posted and was glad I did. The hint to pay attention to 'Now and Then' helped to keep me on track of events as they played out. I fell in love with Cody/Gabriel. He was a sensitive man, while at the same time, strong, ruthless, focused on the task at hand, and loyal. His life was a rollercoaster of tragedy and success. I won't give away any of the details, except to say what the fates gave him throughout his life, prepared him for his final job.
Cassandra was a beautiful agent with a one track mind. She had to discover who the man was that took out an entire death squad, while saving young trafficked girls. She irritated me at first because she wouldn't leave this man alone. She does have a heart, however.
I loved this book. I loved how it played out with twists and turns I didn't see coming. I had trouble putting the book down and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves mystery, magic, and adventure.

Captivating read

On starting this book, I'm not one for looking at what chapter I'm on so I got a tad confused half way through, switched to goodreads and one reviewer stated that there was a then and now under the chapter, lesson learned there lol. I went back to the beginning and understood it a lot better, was a fantastic read and read it in one night finished just shy of 2am. Going to read the 2nd one after awaken the hunters by Damian but Jarrod you caught my attention and I will be purchasing the paperback through amazon for when I want to read it again. I do this with all books I like so you are on my radar and I will recommend your books to everyone I know. Fantastic work, had me in tears too.

I really enjoyed this paranormal story. I was pulled in right from the beginning of the book. I enjoyed the flow and pace. A word of caution, pay attension to the start of each chapter "then" and "now". This added more depth, background and understanding to the characters.
The author has obviously thought about this story and the direction it was going to take. The research was evident. This is a great debut book and I will be recommending this read to my friends. I'm sure the author will improve as more books are written. I am looking forward to the next book of the series.
