Some of the most influential people in history have made themselves heard despite their quiet voices and personalities, such as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Bill Gates. The Little Book of Quiet takes a broad look at the need for, and the benefits of, achieving more quiet in your life. It will teach introverts how to harness their many positive qualities, and help extroverts to allow more quiet into their lives. Now that everyone is connected digitally 24/7, more emphasis is being placed on achieving higher emotional intelligence (EQ) to empathize and negotiate with others.
The ability to be quiet is not only a key people skill, and a basic requirement of being a good listener, but it is also known to reduce stress, and help you find inner calm as it brings your focus back to the present world around you. The Little Book of Quiet explores the different ways of achieving more quiet in our lives, through tips, exercises, inspirational quotes and through the teachings of mindfulness.
This was a present to myself, for Christmas. Kmart have great little bargains. A big fan of reading about personality types, and of course of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, I looked forward to reading this. This little book is nothing like Susan Cain's book, more like a little guide of handy hints. I found them to be quite basic, and mostly in point form. Here are a few:
I admit that the first thought in my mind when I purchased this was "The Little Book of Calm" from Black Books (the British TV show). Funnily enough, I think this book could be used the same way.
The book does seem to fixate on introverts more than extroverts which is probably as we need more calm and peace in our lives. (For the benefit of people who don't know me, I am autistic and extremely introverted.) This isn't a bad thing but it does seem to be concentrate on this rather than quiet in certain sections.
The advice given is good. Just good. It is easy to read and hard to follow. It doesn't fit in with a lot of lifestyles including my own. The quotes are occasionally doubtfully attributed but some are rare to see.
This book might help some people. It should be read by those along with other works. It was a quick read and it earned 3 stars.
This book is not just about quietness but also about being an introvert. There is nothing new in this book that an introvert does not already know. Nothing new and nothing to learn from this mini book.
Interesting, but it seemed more like a book in defense of being an introvert. It was full of comments about how the introvert life is good and how we should all play up that side of our personality. Not what I expected.
