Marked for death by a despotic monarch, Heather joins with a group of revolutionaries known as the Dragon Rebels. Amongst them are a trio of shape-shifting wizards, former rulers who claim to be from the past. She travels to the savage island of Boravagg, seeking to free the wizards' magic from the Dragonstone. If she succeeds, she'll restore the kingdom. The prospects for her survival, however, look incredibly bleak.
Prince Dane has been waiting for centuries to reclaim his kingdom, wrested away from his family by treachery and deceit. When he discovers his fate may depend on a young green-eyed beauty with a skill for archery, he's skeptical at first. As time goes on, he finds himself increasingly attracted to her strength and character...but can he change his arrogant ways enough to win her heart?
When I first started reading Tournament of Chance I wasn't sure what to expect but after reading a few chapters I was completely captivated. The story really appealed to my fantasy-loving side and I loved the world S.G. Rogers created. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enoyed this book.
The main character was Heather and while I was really interested in her story, I was just as caught up in the lives of the other characters. They were gorgeous to read about and they wer all unique and individual - I loved it!
Heather was head-strong, fun, brave, passionate and loyal and I loved her from the start, Dane was also another love-at-first-meet character. He was smug, sexy and there was just enough warmth in his hard, judgemental stance for me to find him absolutely drool-worthy. As soon as Dane came into the picture, sparks between he and Heather began to fly. The pacing of their relationship wasn't too fast, which I liked, and their chemistry was brilliant.
The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the style of writing, it just felt a bit plain to me. After the first couple of chapters though, I warmed up to the writing and my previous doubts fled to the back of my mind as I became so hooked on the story.
I really loved the plot! Just when I thought I'd figured out what direction we were going in, a hole opened infront of me and I fell down a wonderful, new path. Some parts of the story I saw coming, but most of it was unexpected and a blast to read.
This book was a great mix of fantasy, dragons, trolls, magic, monarchs, love, hope, loss and an amazing cast of characters. I had so much fun living Heather's story and I want to read more by S.G. Rogers and see what other magical worlds she can create!
Once again S.G. Rogers hooked me with a wonderful and enthralling read that had me devouring page after page way past my bedtime. In this book you’ll find everything you expect to come across in a great fantasy novel – magic crystals, wizards, dragons, trolls, and much much more. At first I thought this was going to be something very similar to “The Hunger Games”, but this story is something refreshingly unique, and nowhere close to Suzanne Collins’s dystopian novel.
As with her previous book “The Last Great Wizard of Yden”, the author has once again created a world in which readers can immerse themselves comfortably; with characters that steal your heart, “Tournament of Chance” takes you on a journey through time with loveable characters and surprising plot twists that leaves you breathless. I was left in awe of this author’s boundless imagination as she transports the reader to places only reached by the wildest imagination.
This is a fantastic YA read which I highly recommend for young and old alike! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
This book had it all, romance, excitement, fantasy and adventure. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into with this book from reading the summary. But I was not disappointed at the end of it.
I really love how unique all the ideas in this book are. It's not your basic fantasy and magic novel. It has a unique foundation in which S.G. Rogers enthralls you from the very beginning and doesn't let you go. You experience emotions all over the spectrum and S.G. makes you really believe these are living, breathing characters. She paints a beautiful story that I just did not want to end.
Rogers deftly wields a plot line that would take me three books to see through into one. It's fast paced and fascinating! There were spots I wanted it to slow down a bit to get more of a reaction from the characters but that was mostly because I didn't want it to end. I loved Heather, and Dane, and Jo, and Shimmer, and... You know, I loved everyone. This was a completely developed world. The time travel aspect was really interesting, and I really liked the way magic worked in this universe. I'll be on the lookout for more books from this author for sure!
Did I enjoy this book: I really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued by the synopsis but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Tournament of Chance. I did not expect to like it as much as I did even while reading it. The last third really hooked me.
I don't read a lot of fantasy, medieval times book. In fact, I can't remember the last one I read...if I did at all. Anyway... This was a really good "first" book for me. I didn't feel like I was in a time when there were kings and commoners and dragons but I was immersed in this world with such ease. I was lost in this land. There were dragons, trolls, wizards, other flying reptile beasts...and time travel. Who couldn't love that?
Prince Dane Ormvalder was a fantastic character. He had so many emotions and struggled through them as he figured out what he felt and what was going on in his world. Heather was a strong, female lead character. I loved her wit, sarcasm, and how much she cared about others. There wasn't a character that I didn't like. I cared about just about everyone. Manny, Shimmer, Jovander, Gumm, and Ariel all added to the story and sometimes had me laughing out loud. The Dragon Rebels and other secondary characters added to this story. I loved the chef and even the fairy who had it out for the Ormvalder royals.
For me, Tournament of Chance was unique and kept me interested. I thought the plot was really well-written and different. I didn't expect the outcome at all. The landscape, people, and cultures were described well and made me feel as if I were there. My only wish was to find out what happened to King Chance. I understand what happened but I would have liked a little more. (I don't want to spoil anything about this book which is why I won't say more about this one point.)
Would I recommend it: I would recommend this book. I would even recommend it to people who would say that this isn't their genre, it was that good.
Will I read it again: I think I may read this book again at some point in the future. I wasn't sure at first, but after finishing it, I think I will revisit Tournament of Chance.

First of all, I am not a typical fantasy book reader. I have read several within the past year, and sometimes I really connect with them. This book has a lot going for it. History and fantasy combine to create a pretty dramatic, intriguing tale at times. I was horrified at the treatment of those trying to overthrow the unjust government. I actually wish there had been more historical elements.
I am very glad to report that this is a clean read with no profanity nor sex. This means that young adults can feel free to read this, and moms and grandmas can read it, too! The romance is great, and I really can't say it's sappy. In fact, I kind of like Dane. I'd almost consider going back in time if I could get a prince like him!
I love the strength of Heather in this novel. I know it is the trend for there to be strong female protagonists in novels, and indeed Heather is strong but still feminine. I can only hope that there were many women like her throughout history. The world may never know.
Thee time travel portion of the book took me a while to get into. Once I embraced it, I began to see comparisons to the ultimate time travel story (as far as I'm concerned), "Somewhere in Time." But the ending of the story was a bit of let-down. I was hoping for a "meatier" ending, but that's just me. I'm sure most of the true romantics out there will love the ending.
Although this book was not my absolute favorite, it is indeed one of the better fantasies I have read. I would definitely be willing to read more books by this author.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
At the age of eight Heather travels with her father to the king’s castle. While barred from ever entering because of her low status, she is told that there is one way to become noble. Every year the king holds a contest known as the Tournament of Chance, where any adult female has a chance to win a place in court through an archery competition. What happens when Heather attends the Tournament of Chance at the age of eighteen will change her entire world. “Tournament of Chance” is S. G. Rogers new fantasy novel.
S. G. Rogers does an absolutely fantastic job with character development. Heather was an extraordinary heroine, strong and smart. She is completely able to take care of herself. She has a fantastic strength, which allows her to challenge the conventions of their society. I thoroughly enjoyed both Joe and Manny. I loved the added humor. Their world becomes dangerous very quickly; the humor and romance between her and Dane add lightness to the suspense and danger of their situation.
I loved this novel. Fantasy will always hold a special place in my heart, and because of this I can be hard on fantasy books. S. G. Rogers did not disappoint. The book was fast-paced and extremely well written. I actually would have enjoyed a couple hundred more pages.
I strongly recommend this novel to any fantasy lover. It’s an easier read then some, but is still definitely worth your time. I can’t wait to read another of S. G. Roger’s novels.
I received this book through Goodreads First Reads. This in no way influenced my review. I did not receive compensation for, nor was required to, write a review.
A hunter’s daughter becomes the spark that ignites a revolution—in time.
In the Kingdom of Destiny, King Chance decreed any female be she high or low born may earn a place at court by winning an archery competition known as the Tournament of Chance. Although no commoner has ever won before, this is Heather’s year. To prevent her from winning the tournament, however, King Chance will stop at nothing. The king does not yet realize Heather of the Jagged Peaks will be the spark that ignites a revolution — in time.
Heather’s appearance at the Tournament of Chance sparks not only a revolution, but reveals a corruption so deep, it reaches even the King. Reading the story, we see Heather revealed as a light at the end of the tunnel, for a people who have long suspected, that all is not what it seems in their Kingdom. With Heather’s determination and great sense of justice, the reader is taken on a fantasy journey, with twists and turns that I never could have imagined.
I could make this review short and say, this was one of those books I couldn't wait to get back to, and end it there, but I won't. That says a lot in my book. I read this book every chance I could: before bed, during my lunch time, while putting my make-up on etc. This compelling read has the best of everything! I loved the storyline, the characters, the fantasy world, the romance...well, even the bad guys! Tournament of Chance is one of those books, that when you finish, you love the ending but you are incredibly sad because you don't want to leave this world you have been hanging out in the past few days.
This fantasy book has time travel, a great romance, lots of action, dragons, shape-shifters, a powerful lead character and a story that never drags and lots of magic. Even those that think they don't like fantasy, will find something to like in this novel. I am now sitting here wishing for another book with these same characters. I would be thrilled to read anything else this author has written. This book gets 5 stars from me!
Author SG Rogers deftly pulls readers into her layered world of Omaria. The rift between royals and commoners is deep, but once a year in the Tournament of Chance anyone may compete. For eight years, commoner Heather hones her archery skills to win. Magical forces align against her and expose a plot by the royal’s champion. But it’s too late. Heather’s fate is already sealed – she’s marched off to jail. Thanks to a friend and dragons, who turn out to be people, she makes her escape and begins her quest.
Heather journeys through time to right the wrongs of Omaria, running into all kinds of danger. She finds out the joy and heartache of love, but she believes in herself and magic.
I was riveted by Heather’s story. SG Rogers kept me on the edge of my seat because of her fast pacing – I just had to know what happened next.
Tournament of Chance is one of those books that you can't put down until you've finished it! Layered with conflict page after page, the author took me on a journey that included magic, time travel, romance, dragons, trolls, archery etc. Her setting descriptions were spectacular. I loved the heroine, Heather, right away. She's strong, loveable, determined. Chemistry snapped between Heather and the hero, Dane, but it took awhile for them to figure things out. I loved how the author paced their attraction. The plot twists kept me guessing. One particular plot twist made the book for me. (I won't reveal what it is because I don't want to spoil it for readers) Loved this book by S. G. Rogers and can't wait for the next one!
I am a big fan of S.G. Rogers. The beginning and the ending of this novel were fantastic, and the end-between was fun, adventurous, suspenseful, and magical. I admire the author's imagination and the world and characters she created in this book. There are prophecies, wizards, fairies, dragons, trolls, boratures, and an archery hero, Heather of the Jagged Peaks, who ignites a revolution and is sent back in time to attempt to right the wrongs of the current kingdom. Just like the Wizard of Yden series, this is a book that any fantasy lover is sure to enjoy. I highly recommend it.
Once again, S.G. Rogers writes an amazing story. She has an incredible ability to create another world and cast of characters that a reader can escape to and enjoy. This is a thrilling story full of magic, dragons, romance, suspense, fairies and time-travel. I have read other books by this author and I have enjoyed each and every one.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
With just a cursory glance at this book's cover, I could not resist the opportunity to read and review it. I was most intrigued by the fantastical element of dragons, which to me are not as popular as they used to be with the prominence of vampires, shapeshifters, and werewolves in literary works today. When books have such an refreshing outtake I am more inclined to read them, so thanks S.G. Rogers for standing apart from the norm.
What I enjoyed most about Tournament of Chance is its presence of a strong heroine - Heather. Though her boldness and sharp tongue could be translated as impertinence, Heather proves to be an admirable character. At times, I wish she let her guard down a bit, but her cleverness, dexterity, and toughness, reminded me of why a girl like Heather is the way she is. Heather, like Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice, challenges the conventions of society. When she is cheated of an archery tournament hosted by the conniving King Chance because of her "commoner" status, Heather ignites a revolution - one that will put her and her friends in danger.
What really propels her development (and the overall plot) are the sparks that fly between her and Dane - and I mean both antagonistic and romantic sparks. Dane is a Prince of the ancient, magical dynasty, the Ormvalders. He and two other Ormvalders are reawakened into the present, and they plan to restore the power of the rest of the Ormvalders so that they may be strengthened before they too re-awake. It is obvious that Heather and Dane share a mutual attraction, but it is Heather's hardheadedness, and Dane's initial smugness that cause their early conflicts. If you are into romance, Dane and Heather will have you chuckling, rolling your eyes, and eventually sighing.
The plot of Tournament of Chance is also enjoyable. It is extremely fast-paced. There is so much going on, and sometimes I felt a bit overwhelmed. Despite that, I was still interested in reading more. Readers will love the dynamics of the various plot-lines, and the twists that occur. I think the atmospheres could have been described better, but the plot is so engrossing at some instances that I did not really care for a strong buildup of the characters' emotions and surroundings. Also, the inclusion of exclusive creatures and lands remind me of how unique and expansive fantasy can be. Rogers' creativity really shined throughout this book, and I am sure many will appreciate it.
My biggest problem with the novel is its good writing style Note, I said good. I really wish the writing was more outstanding. That would have made Tournament of Chance an even better book. With such a unique cast of characters and plot, I think it deserved more eloquence. I found the writing to be rudimentary at times, and this greatly disappointed me. I think it needed a little more oomph, but it was okay.

Once again I am enchanted by the work of SG Rogers. Tournament of Chance leads you on a roller coaster of emotion. Starting out with 8 year old Heather who joins her father on a trip to the castle, she discovers so many new things and believes that magic could truly exist. She meets a new friend, Joe, and vows to her father that one day she will live at the castle. Spending the next few years training to become the best archer so she can win a title at the Tournament of Chance, Heather finds herself thrown in the middle of an upstart to over throw the tyrant king and restore the original rulers (the Ormvandlers) to their rightful place in the kingdom. Now on a quest to restore the magic that was put under protection nearly 300 years earlier by the old King; Heather, Joe, Shimmer (The old kings brother), Manny (Shimmer’s son), and Dane Ormvandler (the crown prince that is nearly 300 years old) are enroute to a dangerous island overrun by trolls and other magical creatures. Dane and Heather find love in the midst of so much danger and Heather finds magic is truly alive as their quest comes to a very unexpected end or maybe beginning as Heather and Joe are flung back in time 600 years to a time where the country has not even had a king. Will their actions bring restoration to their land? Will they ever get back to their own time? Will Heather find her true love or will everything she has ever hoped for be forever taken away? There are so many twists and turns in this story…I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with all of the characters. Very well written story bravo SG Rogers for keeping me captivated.
S.G. Rogers has written a wonderfully captivating story that will keep you reading until the very end. Tournament of Chance has action, mystery, romance, suspense with twists and turns along the way. I loved not only the main character’s Heather and Dane but so many others also. One of the twists in this story (I’m not saying what one) completely shocked and amazed me. I can tell you this it made me so happy I cried and that is all I’ll say about it. If you love a book with a strong leading female character this is the book for you! It also has kings and dragons, trolls, princesses, tournaments and other interesting animals. This is defiantly a book I’d recommend reading if you are a fan of fantasy books.
Heather’s dream has always been to enter the Tournament of Chance. This is her chance she believes if she wins the King will give her a place at court. But Heather soon finds out the King will stop at nothing to keep her from winning. She Ignites a revolution and that is not all she must do to put things right again she must travel though time. But by doing so she may lose the man she loves forever.
Peacocks, a seaside castle, a fiery redhead, dragons, fairies, onion races (losers will be eaten), wizards, trolls, a handsome prince, flying reptiles, a scary island, a liquid magic lake, time travel, flying boats and a traitor ~ it's all here in this adventure-packed fantasy !
Hundreds of years in the past, invading hordes conquered Omaria and the wizards were forced into hiding. With magic outlawed and an abusive aristocracy in power, a talented commoner enters the king's archery tournament with the goal of becoming a Lady. But instead, she becomes the focal point of a revolution when unscrupulous officials deny her victory and she is thrown into the dungeon. Now, along with wizards awakened from the past, she must find the Dragonstone, travel in time, and save her people.
Does she leave her heart behind ? The ending of this story has a really interesting twist !
The author provided me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review. Having read several other books by this author, I must say that Tournament of Chance is my favorite one !
Take a typical S.G Rogers medieval - type fantasy society. Add typical strong female characters, and great friendships. Add the usual villains. And THEN. . .throw in the confusion caused by time travel. There you have it. . . wow!
I loved the premise, and the characters. I loved the plot twists. The only thing I was unhappy with was that I didn’t feel that the plot held together as well as others that Rogers has written. (That brought me down to a 4-star instead of a 5-star review, so it wasn’t too great a fault!)
I adore S. G. Rogers’ writing, and will continue to read (and, I’m sure, enjoy) anything that she writes. (HINT....more about Yden? Please?)
***I received this book free of charge, in return for an honest review.***

I found this book on Twitter. Judging from the basic premise, I thought it would be much like "The Hunger Games." But instead of being about a fight for survival, it's more about magical whimsy, high-flying adventure, and especially--young people making googly eyes at each other. Our heroine, Heather of Jagged Peaks, wins an archery tournament but is framed for cheating and ignites a revolution that her friends and neighbors have been waiting for. Instead of leading an army of villagers with pitchforks, Heather flies to an island with members of the old royal family who just woke up from cryostasis. She shatters a large dragon crystal ... and then the real plot begins. A fun read, I only wish the ending was a bit different and less sappy.
A very well written book. The characters are very believable. The story line keeps you on your toes and you can not put the book down. I read the entire book in one sitting.. a very talented author with a vivid sense of time and space. I look forward to all her books. Thank you.
An unjust king picks the wrong commoner to betray in Tournament of Chance by S. G. Rogers, a fast-paced fantasy story about a rebellion fueled by love and happening through time itself. I love the tours that I Am a Reader, Not a Writer hosts, since they are a great opportunity to read and review wonderful books that I might not get a chance to otherwise. When the email came for Tournament of Chance, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but there was a dragon on the cover so my chances seemed good :D. Plus archery is pretty awesome! Strengths: Tournament of Chance is a fast read, full of adventure and action. I really couldn’t put the Kindle down :D. The plot of Tournament of Chance got really interesting with all of the time travel coolness ;-). Time travel can be kind of silly if done poorly, but I liked the mechanic that Rogers used. Great secondary characters! I loved that troll, he was so adorable Weaknesses: Insta-love in a can, it causes cancer and global warming or something like that…. No seriously, the characters go from disliking each other to saying the L-word in a couple of pages and I just can’t connect with a relationship like that. It weakens everything about a plot :-/. Tournament of Chance had too little description of what I think we can all agree is the coolest part: the dragons! In general the description was pretty light, but there was literally nothing beyond “and then they were dragons.” There are lots of different kinds of dragons for the record! I need to know what these dragons look like :D. Summary: For the most part, I really enjoy Tournament of Chance. The writing was compelling and fluid and the plot was interesting. While the character development and description was a little disappointing, you could make the argument that I’m just picky with some things ;-) and you will really enjoy Tournament of Chance for what it is: an awesome adventure through time to stop an evil king before he’s even born! I mean how much more bad-ass can a rebellion get?? I’m not just going to try to overthrow you, I’m going to try to make it so you were NEVER king :D Boo-yah! ;-) Remind me not to get on the wrong side of this chick! Anyway, if you are in the mood for a fast and fun read and don’t mind insta-love, go grab Tournament of Chance.
Heather is a spitfire, backwater girl who knows how to wield a bow and arrow. She’s always dreamed of living in the ornate palace she visited as a child, and if she wins the Tournament of Chance, she can fulfill that dream. But when the tournament turns into an uproar, little does she know that she’s about to be swept into a mission much more daring and significant than her own.
I’m not really one for fantasy, so it’s all the more surprising that I liked this book. I wasn’t sure about it at first, but as the story progressed, I got more and more engrossed in it. It grew on me, you could say. I felt like the plot has many layers that continued to be pulled back and revealed, and each one delighted me more than the last. And each plot twist was completely unexpected. That’s probably one of the things that kept me hooked throughout the story. Every chapter held something new…dragons, trolls, volcanos, time travel.
I didn’t completely connect with Heather, but I loved her bravery, her stubbornness, and her independence. Her character, as well as her fiery red hair, reminded me of Merida from Brave. Dane, in all his superiority and moodiness, was actually rather attractive as a character. He was like a medieval Mr. Darcy type, and I kind of liked that. I might even steal that kind of character someday for a novel, because it would be awfully fun to write someone like him. I found the rest of the crew funny and entertaining, especially Gumm the troll. The fairies, despite the way they were portrayed, were a favorite of mine, too.
I did have some minor qualms, though. The whole “dragon transformation” and use of magic seemed a little corny at times. Ok, maybe all the time, but I tried to not let it bother me. On the bright side, S. G. Rogers completely developed her world of Omaria, which I really appreciated. Her observance to detail and consistency made the book that much more impressive.
When it comes down to it, Tournament of Chance is a very-well done fantasy. I loved the combo of action and romance, and the plot twists kept me coming back for more. I would recommend this to older teens as well as middle-grade readers in a heartbeat. It’s a fun, adventurous tale that will keep you laughing the whole way through.

I am very glad that i finished this book. I started as part of a blog tour and wasn't able to finish before my post. I was determined that I would finish the book and give it the review that it deserved, rather than the partial review that I gave it on my blog.
Heather is a resilient young woman. The book begins as she is learning about archery and setting her goal to win and be able to become a lady in the kingdom. She is of common birth. The King has decreed that anyone can win the archery contest and become a noble.
Unfortunately, the King is all talk. He has no intention of honoring his decree. His goal is to keep the common people in their place. Heather begins a revolution. The common folk know who won the contest. Heather is thrown in jail.
This sets Heather on journey that will be through time. She gets the opportunity to be a catalyst to change the direction of the Kingdom. Time will tell if she will have the heart to do what it takes and sacrifice all she holds dear.
I loved the story. It has romance and fantasy elements. It is a book that I can easily recommend to teens. There are kissing scenes and fighting scenes. There are wizards, trolls, dragons, and fairies.
The book is written in a simple and easy to read style. There were times I wished that the book was a little less simplistic, but it should make an easier read for younger readers.
