The water is calling... and Sandy can no longer resist the urge to unleash her mermaid form. But a simple swim in Lake Ontario ends when she discovers the truth of her own banishment. When long time crush, Alardo, seems to shift in a direction she never dreamed possible, Sandy must make a choice — mermaid or human? Once she chooses, she can never go back.
Sandy and her twin sister are half-mermaids. As children they visited their mer-grandparents nearly every summer, with the help of magic bracelets that helped them control their powers. Now, Sandy is an adult studying marine biology in college, and she just realized how many years it has been since she visited the underwater world. Sandy is determined to put off the visit to her grandparents no longer ... and she got more than she bargained for.
Drowning Sandy is a yet another mermaid romance. It's cute, clean, and short, revealing a world of merpeople within the Great Lakes. It is so short, in fact, that I cannot tell you much about it without revealing the whole story. Suffice it to say, it was really good. I fell in love with it when first reading it and wished it was longer. The romance was so sweet! As per usual for mermaid romances, there was a bit of "true love," and it was executed beautifully. I loved the underwater world the author introduced me to, and I loved the story. I hope you will too!
This was a cute, quick, light-hearted book. It was a fun take on mermaids and humans and what happens when the two worlds collide. The characters had some good depth to them, which is difficult to do with a novella.
I didn't give it a 5 because I had a lot of questions as I read that I felt weren't really answered. I wish the book had been longer, allowing for the story and character arch to be more fleshed out. Even though the main character and her love interest had previously known each other, I felt like their relationship was rushed and not very developed.
There were some editing issues, but not so much that it completely took me out of the story. As this was the author's debut novel, and as it was self-published, I suspect future books will be more polished.
Nice job to the author, and thanks for distracting me from the real world for a few hours.

Drowning Sandy, by Sarah Daley, is a delightful story that is a fast and easy read.
The writing is clear and flows well, painting a vivid image of the unusual setting. The main character(Sandy) is likable and I found myself wanting to read more at the end. Almost too much, which is why I gave a 4.25 rather than a 4.5 for the story itself. I realize it is a novella, but there are some aspects of the story that I just wanted fleshed out a bit more. In that same respect, she did an exceptional job of introducing so many characters in this first installment.
One thing I want to point out, is how superb the editing is. Readers are tough on Indie Authors, but Drowning Sandy is a prime example of how you can find a clean, well written book that rivals (and surpasses) many of the 'traditional' books out there. I don't see an editor listed, but if Sarah Daley did it herself....she has another career potential in that market!
I would highly recommend Drowning Sandy to anyone who enjoys YA, fantasy, and especially mermaid stories!

I found this premise to be very fascinating! I've always been intrigued by mermaids and I've also always thought they only lived in oceans. These mermaids live in a lake. How cool is that?!
I just discovered, when the cover was revealed, that this is a prequel to what promises to be a fun new series. I love the imaginative way things were set up. I'm always curious to see how an author will transform humans into mermaids and the way their world will be set up--I wasn't disappointed.
The relationships were interesting. Sandy is a twin and her mother is human, but her father is a merman. She meets old friends, bothersome acquaintances, and other family members when she ventures out to find her father, against her mother's wishes. The associations and events that occurred left me wanting to know more, so I was happy to see this series will continue on. I don't want to give anything away, but it is a fun start to a clean romance.
Content: mild romance (kissing); nothing else of note. Clean!

This was a nice little prequel to, I'm assuming, a longer novel still to come. The best part about the story was the unique setting: instead of living in the ocean, the mermaids live in the middle of Lake Ontario. I enjoyed how the author managed to make me think outside the box about how life underwater might be in this century: makeup, phones, books, etc. All the things you wouldn't think of mermaids being able to have in an underwater home, these mermaids used. And the author had a reasonable explanation for each one. Since the story is a prequel, it is short, and there's not a whole lot of plot involved. However, the author is setting the stage for a follow up, where the characters and storyline already introduced are sure to be expounded upon. Nice, clean easy read.

Drowning Sandy is a curious story full of freshwater mermaids living in a lake. As Sandy, who is half human, half mermaid, sneaks away to the lake to find her father, she finds herself caught and it is then that she learns just how deep the rift is between her two worlds. While facing impossible choices, her heart is caught up in it's own desires, hindered by her more desirable twin sister.
This is a great read, with a stimulating setting. I couldn't help but keep turning the pages in anticipation of what was happening Sandy's tumultuous life. I'll definitely be reading Sarah Daley's next book!
As a fairy tale junkie, I always enjoy mermaid stories and this one was great! I had never before seen a story about mermaids living in a lake rather than the ocean and found the whole premise very interesting. The characters were fun and Sandy was so easy to relate to. We've all been there at some point, well, except for having to choose land or sea (lake). My only quibble with the story is the ending is very abrupt. It just ends. I wanted there to be more. I'm excited to know there will be more coming with this story and look forward to learning more about Sandy's world. Overall, a very fun read!
I've read a lot of mermaid books in my time, but this was original and I adored it. I really liked this one. It kept me extremely engrossed as I wondered what would happen. I couldn't predict the ending - which is something I loved about it. There were twists and turns I didn't expect and it was really enjoyable! I would easily read this book again and I'm excited to see what else this author has.
I do love mermaid tales. This one was a good storyline, and I liked the main characters. Not gonna lie, though, the cover did nothing for me. It looks like a creepy story or something...I think it's the look that the girl on the cover is giving. Yeah, yeah, I know...don't judge a book by it's cover. BUT, I don't like it. It doesn't do the story justice.
This was such a fun book. I loved the mermaid world that Sarah created. This book drew me in and kept me reading. My only real complaint was that I felt like it was to short!
