The First Order is Jeff Abbott's 5th book about Sam Capra. I haven't read the previous four books, but there were no problems whatsoever to get into the story.

Six years ago, Sam's brother Danny was killed in Afghanistan, beheaded in a video. But, now Sam has found evidence that Danny may still be alive that the video was just a ploy to let everyone think that Danny was dead. But, why was Danny spared, and why haven't Sam heard from his brother since then? What has Sam been doing these last six years?

I was quickly drawn into the story, it didn't matter one thing that I hadn't read the previous book. I found the main characters Sam and his best friend Mila instantly likable and I was intrigued by the plot in this book. Sam, has before this book been through much with a wife that turned out to be a traitor and a young son that was kidnapped and that he had to get back. Now he found out that his brother may be still alive. A brother, whose death made him join CIA six years ago. And, if that's not enough it seems that his brother is a trained assassin that is hired to kill the president of Russia. So now Sam doesn't just have to find Danny, he has to stop him from killing a world leader. Luckily he has Mila by his side, or is he so lucky? Mila has some secrets of her own that could ruin everything.

The story is action-filled and exciting to read. I did feel towards the end that the story dragged a bit, I felt a bit impatient with the story and wanted it to move faster forward. Although I do understand that there were things that needed to happen, but the intensity of the story seemed to slow down a bit instead of speeding up. But, then towards the end, the story picked up the speed again when everything came to the explosive finale.

I was impressed with the book, I found it well-written and I think that it will intrigue fans of spy novels. This is a series that I want to read more from, both books before this one and future books.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through Edelweiss for an honest review!

This is my first Jeff Abbott book, but the fifth one in his Sam Capra series. While I was missing some obvious backstory since I didn't read any of the first four, the story itself still held together nicely. This fit into the spy/thriller genre, which I enjoy. Three stars is a good rating for me, and I do plan on reading more by this author.

I liked the MC, Sam. He was the good brother and stood for all that was honest. The other characters, less than glowing compared to Sam, balanced everything else out. There were a nice mix of personalities. I was able to stay with the story line.

The one thing that is holding this back from a four star rating was the narration. It took some getting used to.

I didn't like this one as much as the others in this series. I liked that Sam was trying to find his brother, but I didn't care for the Russian oligarchs theme (he sure used that term a lot in this book). The first 3/4 of the book I had to force my way through. Seemed liked it dragged on longer than necessary. Last 100 pages were good and made it worth my time.

Not a high-caliber espionage/thriller. I have read a lot of books in this genre (if you don't believe me, just take a look at my list of read books) and I never really was engrossed in this one. There is a cockamamie set-up: we are led to believe that Sam Capra's brother's life is spared somewhere in the middle east, and he is somehow sweet-talked into assassinating the President of Russia. C'mon, man! The secondary characters, while interesting, lead us down a nearly 400-page road where you know what will happen. There were some memorable scenes and snippets of intrigue, but overall this one fell flat with me.

This 4.5 star book kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire ride. My eyes are bleary from reading it almost straight through. I guess I find myself invested in this ex-CIA very young spook and his basic goodness, which may sound corny but isn't. One should read the books in this series in order, or the largest part of the plots will be obscured, or lost.

If there are more in the pipeline, I'll plan to read them.

The First Order is the second Sam Capra novel I have read. The first was Downfall. Sam searches for clues about the terrorist slaying of his brother in Afghanistan. His missing brother coupled with a horrific execution video has haunted Sam for six years. He needs answers for some sort of closure. He learns not everything may be as it appears. Who are the Brothers of the Mountain & why would they take Danny hostage? The First Order is an international intrigue thriller with espionage & political conspiracy. The main character, Sam Capra, is in an unique situation with a string of nightclubs around the globe & international contacts. Sam has a weakness for helping people & finding trouble. I would read another Sam Capra adventure.

I won The First Order in a Goodreads giveaway.

I suspect one has to have investment in Sam Capra, and cannot simply drop in late in the series and appreciate the action. Since I have never read one of these books before I had to put it aside in favor of a movie portraying this type of assassin/war play. I do periodically enjoy reading a political thriller, but not this one. Maybe some day I will circle back and start at the beginning.

Good enough which sounds like "damning with faint praise." I don't mean it quite that way as it did indeed meet a good-enough standard, a solid three star rating.

I've read all the books in the series at this point and like each to varying degrees.

Pro:
* Main character Sam Capra

* the interplay between the two brothers, Sam and Danny, with a complicated back history ...

* ... which becomes exponentially more complicated within the pages of this book

Con:
* and speaking of complicated: secondary and tertiary characters abound. I found it hard to keep them sorted.

* The First Order has numerous references to the other books in the series. I remember, in the vaguest sense, the Round Table. I remember nothing about the Nine Suns other than I had seen the name previously and so forth.

Anyway, The First Order seems to leave the door open for another in the Sam Capra series, while not a cliff-hanger ending. In other words, we have an okay stopping point for the series here.

Recommend: Nope. Too much backstory to make this a stand-alone.

Enjoyable read but the dialogue on decisions and tense situations tended to drag. I'm also wondering if I'm the only person that did not know about Polonium. Is there a special spy school where you learn all these details?

Have read most of the rest of the Capra series. This was disappointing. Tedious plot. I listened to it on tape. The narrator was whiny. Did not finish. One to safely skip.

The First Order, book five in the Sam Capra series, by Jeff Abbott continues the odyssey of Sam and his search for his lost brother. A search that is at the root of his career with the CIA and then his alignment with a shadow espionage agency that may or may not be on the right side of the law.

It was the worse day of Sam Capra's life as he watch an online video, showing the execution of his brother Danny by terrorists. The tragic act left Sam's life shattered and that of his parents as well. But Sam has now dedicated his life to finding his brother's body and the terrorists responsible for this act. To do so he has joined the CIA and trained as a espionage agent and assassin. When he left the CIA, he joined with a shadow agency to further his obsession.

But now, he has uncovered evidence that the dark truth he believes may all be a lie. Danny is not dead and worse, has been trained as an international assassin. Now Sam realizes that perhaps his brother has been near him all along. That Danny has not only been alive, but able to make contact at any time, but has chosen not to. Worse, Danny may have taken a job that could plunge the world into chaos by assassinating the Russain President. Now Sam must not only find his brother, but stop him.

Jeff Abbott writes thrillers. Pulse pounding, action packed books that you often feel like you stepped into the middle of the foray from the very first page. The First Order is not quite on that level and suffers from the sentimentality of the brothers and their estranged relationship. Sam as a character is slipping in this one and some of the supporting cast steps up, but not quite enough. It lacks the sense that you are a part of this world and this is really happening. The suspension of belief is so needed in a book like this that has roots in reality.

This is Timothy Dalton James Bond. You know the character and the story but it just doesn't deliver.

The book was surprisingly tense, exhilarating and truly wonderful. It will turn a normal reading session into a high-speed chase on the highway with red and blue lights flashing behind you; that's how intense the suspense is.

"The First Order, a Sam Capra Thriller" by Jeff Abbott was the first of Mr. Capra's books that I have read. I rated it a strong three stars instead of four only because I thought it was a bit attenuated in getting to the exciting climax. My opinion, yours may be different.
Mostly it was as a fast paced spy thriller involving an assination plot of the strong-man Russian president designed to take on US soil. The assassin, code named Judge, sets up his plan knowing that he is being hunted. But he is daring and resourceful. So is the man hunting him. So far, routine stuff.
What set it apart is the the assassin and his Hunter are brothers.
The assassin was supposed to have been killed in Afghanistan. The novel opened with the brother, The named hero of the series, Sam, in Afghan, searching the site of the murder of a CIA asset. In a deserted, bloody hut, DNA evidence was found that reveals that Sam's brother, Jeffery, was not killed. He was alive and gone over to the dark side,as it were.
An interesting premise that set "First Order " a part from the usual. Mr.Abbott gives the reader an interesting character in Sam Capra anda good supporting cast. There is just enough of Sam's background to give the reader a sense of Sam Capra's motivation. The author had done his research into the oligarchy of the new ruling class of Russia which gave the novel authenticity. There was not much of the spy or high-tech weapons jargon that can glaze one's eyes, nor was the violence excessive for this time of novel. It all worked pretty well unregistered about three-quarters of the way through when the narrative slowed with a unlikely romance between Mr.Abbott and a Russian killer-bodyguard known for her ruthlessness and single-minded fixation on her job. Seemed just thrown in to me. But overall, a pretty good thriller.
Mr. Abbott was worth placing on my author list.

I liked this book a lot. Of course, it's Jeff Abbott!! He's on a special mission again, but this one is very different. It's personal. He's found out that his brother, who he thought died six years ago, may be alive. This book has a lot of trust issues. Things are going to be quite different in the next book and I, for one, can't wait to read it!!! Ugh, and this one isn't even out yet. It's going to be a long wait.

As usual, there are a lot of plot twists and surprises in this book. Sam is finding out things about people he didn't know before and his trust radar is on full alert and the arrow is going crazy. I held my breath through many scenes while Sam snuck around trying to find his brother. The bad guys seemed to be everywhere because Sam wasn't sure who they were. And neither did I. I stayed up late reading this one because I just couldn't put it down!!

As usual, this was one intriguing, edge of my seat read that I did not want to see end. The ending leaves a lot of questions about Sam's new life and as I said I can't wait to read the next book. This is a great series that thriller readers should be reading. I highly recommend it!!

A huge thanks to Grand Central Publishing and Net Galley for approving my request to send me a free e-galley so that I could read it and give an honest review. This series, in my opinion, is one not to be missed. I have enjoyed every one of these books!!

An epic struggle between two brothers throws Russian-American relations in jeopardy during this strong installment of Abbott’s series (Inside Man, 2014, etc.) featuring ex–CIA sleuth Sam Capra.

Just when Capra is sure he’s about to retire, he gets word that his brother, Danny, thought to have been beheaded in a terrorist video, may still be alive. He doesn’t yet know that Danny, now known as Philip Judge, has become a killer for hire who’s just taken on his biggest assignment, executing the president of Russia for $20 million. Both brothers wind up infiltrating the circle of Russian billionaires who’ve landed in Miami. To stop Danny from carrying out the execution, Sam needs to find the identity of Firebird, the president’s associate who commissioned the hit. Sam is helped considerably by his ability to attract women: he charms hard-partying Russian celebrity Katya Kirova and falls into a sexual affair with Irina Belinskaya, the widow of a high-ranking official, whose rumored vengeance on her husband’s killers has earned her the title of Russia’s most dangerous woman. Meanwhile, Sam’s associate, Mila, has her own reasons to find Danny and keeps her information hidden from Sam—throwing him into further danger before the brothers reach their climactic confrontation.

Abbott loads his story with entertaining plot twists, not all of which make perfect sense, but the bond and betrayal between the two brothers add emotional depth to the action.

I thought I would never finish this book. I had read the last Capra book and thought it was entertaining. This book was so full of characters I had a hard time keeping them straight. Parts were so unbelievable to this reader, so much so, that I wanted to scream and curse.

Ho-hum at best. I finished it but only after several lulls when I contemplated moving on. The various plot pieces were muddled, which resulted in a story that was not particularly engaging. Characters and their motives were not well developed.

1 star is too much, didn’t finish. Can not stomach whiners, and Sam is King of Whiners; Need to find Danny, need to get home to Danny, oh Danny, poor Danny, Danny, Danny, Danny, aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAA. If your looking for an action adventure and a tough guy book, run, run far away from this series.

finished 21st march 2024 good read three stars i liked it kindle library loaner sam capra #5 have been reading these in order all entertaining reads...and i have the next and apparently the last loaded on kindle and the next read after i finish with a c.j. box story. stories 1 & 2 establish sam capra working for the c.i.a. and then not working for them...two groups...one clearly nefarious known as the nine suns and there's something from the historical record that refers to and to be honest i've forgotten what that is...and their foil known as the round table clearly reference to king arthur so forth so on and they are somewhat nebulous and while the first group passes away after the second story the round table continues into this one #5 and we do learn a bit more about them....i think it was in #3 we learn of yet another group, hell bent for leather...do you ever wonder at the confederacies that establish themselves...mostly to do for themselves and to others what they wouldn't want done to them? yeah everything's just peachy. and this 3rd group has something...chinese i think it was...from i. ching?...you can see how my education has been difficult. that was story #3...#4...fuzzy on the details...sam capra being sam capra..and this one involves russia and more on the round table. through it all sam has an infant son and we don't really see much of him...or his "nanny"...and i believe in the last one we do see more of him...several years have passed since story one. all entertaining reads.

oh yeah...in this one there's a scene where characters are shooting trap on the back of a luxury yacht and when complete one of them hands the rifle to one of the yacht's guards. all going well until that word...where i'd expect shotgun...i'll hazard that most would expect one shoots trap with a shotgun and all that does is level suspicion at the remainder of the story. gets the facts jack. precision matters.

Sam Capra gets a BIG discovery at the end of book #4 about his brother still being alive! A file on his brother found at the secret prison where Sam was being held. Danny, his brother, is not only alive, but is working with Jimmy, Mila's husband, and Jimmy has known this whole time about Danny. Danny has been living a life of thrill and secrets and avoiding Sam every chance he gets. Danny is linked to the heart of Russian elite inner circle including the President and being a hit-man for different agencies. Sam is onto his plans to disrupt the American/Russian meeting and is getting worried about the truth of his brother.

Sam tries to partner with Mila to save his brother, unknowingly that Mila is trying to capture Danny herself. They end up in Russia elite parties, captured, released, plotting to kill the president, saving the president, fleeing, and more. Very suspenseful ending, just when Sam finally reunites with his brother, everything just slips away in a frustrating ending.

The book was good, but I was a big displeased with this being the last Sam Capra book. I didn't find the reuniting and overall plot as the best fit for the final book. Some of the other Sam Capra books were much more exciting with the plots and action to keep my really intrigued. Not that this didn't have some good twists and suspense, but just not my favorite.

Another adrenaline-filled thriller starring Sam Capra. This time, he's hunting for his brother Danny, who supposedly died six years ago at the hands of terrorists in a remote village in Afghanistan. But when Sam finds evidence his brother is still alive, he won't let anything stop him from finding him, even if his brother may not be the same person Sam remembers.

The plot had plenty of action and surprising twists, so overall, it fit well into the series. My main disappointment was
