Being safe and at home has its downfalls. The subjects of media controversy, Nora and Aidan realize that they made a terrible mistake coming home. The only way to get their friends back is to visit Nora's murderous aunt in the asylum.

But when a skeptical group of students don't believe the media's story, they begin to follow Nora and Aidan where things go very wrong, very fast.

Without access to the Demon's Grave, their friends could be lost forever. But, with access, there could be a few new players in Damien's game, and with that comes death.

5 Stars = Blew my socks off. This novel had everything, checked all the boxes, and I could read it over and over.
4 Stars = I really liked this story. It had everything I'd want in a good story.
3 Stars = This was a great story, though may have missed one or two details, for me.
2 or less Stars It didn't speak to me, but that doesn't mean it won't speak to you. I will likely not rate if I feel this way.

Pros: Excellent story, great next book in the series

Cons: Cliff hanger!!!

Overall rating: Highly, highly recommended

Impressions: I feel like the author is really working with this series and keeping it engaging.

Review:

So after I finished the first one I had to get the next one. As luck would have it, it was available through Kindle Unlimited and I got all giggly. I finished it all in the same night. I couldn't put it down. I was sad when I got to the end of the book and realized I was going to have to wait for the next one. :(

I love that Nora is becoming a different girl, stronger and more willing to do things she needs to do for her friends. She is becoming a very strong, smart lead character. I think that she will continue to gain strength and show what she can really do.

And Damien, what can I say about him? He is still my current book crush and I can't wait to see what happens next with him. We have to wonder if he and Nora have something happening to them that is beyond their control. I would not be against this, but I would be jealous. :)

This book gives us more insight into what is going on with Nora and why things are happening the way they are. It really helps flesh out the story more.

While this book was still very good and definitely enjoyable, I didn't quite get into it as much as I did the first one. I didn't totally get why the new characters were so obsessed with finding out what really happened to Aidan and Nora and the friends they left behind. Plus, these three new people were such complete jerks with one being an absolute asshole. I don't know how Nora didn't try and punch him at least a dozen times. Yeah, okay, the dude was way bigger and stronger than her...but I hated him. It took a while to get back to the Demon's Grave, and while things didn't really pick up per se, they definitely got more interesting.

So Aidan and Nora have been back home for about three weeks now I think. It's finals at school now but that doesn't mean there still isn't a lot students around. And things are super uncomfortable for the both of them with the whispers and the staring. Even getting practically cornered by three friends one day who don't believe their story. Knowing that going back to Aidan's house wouldn't get them back to the Grave, they end up visiting Nell. That was fun. But they believe they find out enough to be a hint as to what to do next. And the night finally comes for them to perform the midnight ruling Nora found in Nell's book. That goes horribly wrong with only Aidan being taken away. And what the two of them didn't know is that the group of friends followed them there and witnessed the whole thing. Things with them go from bad to worse when they literally attack Nora in her bed one night. But surprise for all! Now you're going to play Damien's game too.

I'm not sure why, by Nora gets tied up and dragged back. Even she didn't get it because she was quite willing to go. Poor Nora also ends up going back while wearing only her pajamas and socks. Damien has changed things up a bit this time around to be sure. And he also clues Nora in on an earth-shattering reality. She ends up cheating, a BIG nono to Damien remember, but he lets her off this time with just a warning. Phoebe was the first friend Nora finds and while I greatly dislike that girl, she does give Nora the strength and direction that she needs. We do not find everybody in this book and of those we do, not all make it. But it's clear that Damien wants Nora to stay alive and be his Neophyte. There's also a suspicious girl that may or may not actually be Nieve. That would be interesting. And what the hell happened to Aidan damn it?

I'm really kind of hoping for something to come of this thing between Nora and Damien in the last book. Hell, I'm actually wanting her to become his Neophyte.

While the editing was better this time, there were still a bunch of times where there were missing or extra words.

::..Reviewed for Red's Midnight Readers..::

It's been a while since I read the first book so I thought I would struggle picking up the story but actually it all came back to me pretty quickly. It was very easy to follow.

Midnight Ruling picks up a number of weeks after they leave The Demon's Grave in book one, so you really need to have read the first book to appreciate this one.

The actual story itself initially was very slow going. The first 50% seemed to go on and on forever with not a lot appearing to actually happen and I found it difficult to get into, however after the 50% mark the story picked up and I couldn't put it down. It moves along at a much faster pace, full of action that will keep you flipping those pages.

I felt it wasn't as good as the first book but definitely an enjoyable read nonetheless.

Midnight Ruling (The Demon's Grave #2) by E.M. MacCallum

In book two of the Demon's Grave series, Aidan and Nora realize the made a mistake coming home. Now they want to make things right, which means going to the Asylum where Nora's crazy Aunt is. They need answers and hope her Aunt will help.

Then a group of students begin to follow the pair, and things get really bad. Despite this obstacle, they decide to try and go back into the Demon's Grave, but Damien has plans for them, and they are not good. Danger awaits at every moment, will they be able to save their friends?

Book two picks up perfectly where Demon's Grave left off. There is drama, action and danger. The story moves at a slower pace, but still detailed enough giving a great feel of what is going on. Nora starts to accept her destiny, and really wants to do the right thing, no matter what. Will she be able to accomplish what she set out to do?

I enjoyed this installment and look forward to reading book three. I recommend Midnight Ruling to those who love (dark) fantasy. I feel they will enjoy it as well as I did . Great as a stand alone, but I also suggest reading book one: The Demon's Grave.

I actually liked this book better than the first book of the series. I felt there was more action and this book didn't seem to drag for me as the first one did.

Nora and Aiden do what they can to find their way back into the Demon's Grave in hopes of rescuing their friends. But a nosy group of kids who don't believe Nora's and Aiden's story start to follow them around, things get a little carried away.

If you enjoy fantasy/horror, then the Demon's Grave series is for you.
