Indigo Hamilton was a lovely bride and the day was perfect as she walked down the aisle toward her smiling groom, Thomas Brewster. She was the absolute center of attention and loved being there - until the priest asked if anyone had any objections to the marriage. Then the doors of the church swung open and Indigo's world fell apart.
Flannon Sullivan chose to sit at the back of the church. Thank goodness Indigo would be out of Love's Valley and living in Shirleysburg for the next several months. Flannon had promised his sister, Douglass, and his brother, Colum, he'd stay until spring to help with the new horses and the new homes being built in Love's Valley but only because Indigo would be married and gone. When the world came crashing down around Indigo's white wedding dress, he sure enough wished he could break that promise.
Indigo hated all things Southern, especially the swaggering, handsome Flannon Sullivan. Flannon could have forgiven Indigo for being a Yankee but he sure hated that well-honed sharp tongue she used too often. Each of them made a silent vow that disastrous day they'd stay out of each other's way all winter. But fate had different plans.
Hi! I'm twenty five years old and movie star gorgeous. The camera added thirty plus years and a few wrinkles. Can't trust those cameras or mirrors either. Along with bathroom scales they are notorious liars! Honestly, I am the mother of three fantastic grown children who've made me laugh and given me more story ideas than I could ever write. My husband, Charles, is my strongest supporter and my best friend. He's even willing to eat fast food and help with the laundry while I finish one more chapter! Life is good and I am blessed!
Reading has been a passion since I was five years old and figured out those were words on book pages. As soon as my chubby little fingers found they could put words on a Big Chief tablet with a fat pencil, I was on my way. Writing joined reading in my list of passions. I will read anything from the back of the Cheerio's box to Faulkner and love every bit of it. In addition to reading I enjoy cooking, my family and the ocean. I love the Florida beaches. Listening to the ocean waves puts my writing brain into high gear.
I love writing romance because it's about emotions and relationships. Human nature hasn't changed a bit since Eve coveted the fruit in the Garden of Eden. Settings change. Plots change. Names change. Times change. But love is love and men and women have been falling in and out of it forever. Romance is about emotions: love, hate, anger, laughter... all of it. If I can make you laugh until your sides ache or grab a tissue then I've touched your emotions and accomplished what every writer sets out to do.
I got serious about writing when my third child was born and had her days and nights mixed up. I had to stay up all night anyway and it was very quiet so I invested in a spiral back notebook and sharpened a few pencils. The story that emerged has never sold but it's brought in enough rejection slips to put the Redwood Forest on the endangered list. In 1997 Kensington bought two books for their Precious Gems line. Two years and six books later the line died with only four of those books seeing publication. But by then Avalon had bought a book and another, and another. Ten years later the list has grown to thirty nine. Last year Sourcebooks bought the Lucky Series which is in the bookstores now. They've also bought The Honky Tonk Series which will debut with I LOVE THIS BAR in June and will be followed by HELL, YEAH, MY GIVE A DAMN'S BUSTED, and HONKY TONK CHRISTMAS.
Folks ask me where I get my ideas. Three kids, fifteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Note: I was a very young grandmother! Life is a zoo around here when they all come home. In one Sunday afternoon there's enough ideas to keep me writing for years and years. Seriously, ideas pop up at the craziest times. When one sinks its roots into my mind, I have no choice but to write the story. And while I'm writing the characters peek over my shoulder and make sure I'm telling it right and not exaggerating too much. Pesky little devils, they are!
I have a wonderful agent, Erin Niumata, who continues to work magic and sell my work. I'm very lucky to have her and my editors who continue to believe in me.
Of all of Carolyn Browns books, this one was one that grated on my nerves.
I feel she took the nastiness of the heroin too far, too many times. Perhaps because the series was getting to close and she had played out the meanness and rudeness sin the herons in the previous books of the series.
And also, it ends up smacking of interbreeding. At least two sibling marries a sibling or ones mate and in the end, the parent marries the parent of the mates . Just too much inner marrying, and in real life, this is why jokes are made of rednecks and "marrying their own grandpa."
Thoroughly enjoyed this series, each and every one! Would recommend these books to everyone. I hesitated about reading this one because of one particular low review, but am glad to decide for myself. Indigo really does mature in the course of the story, and maybe the trials she experiences are what she needed to accomplish that. Well worth reading if you've started the earlier books. I'd recommend reading them in order so you can get to know the characters as the post-Civil War days impact them.
The last of the "Love's Valley" series focuses on Flannon, the youngest of the 6 Sullivan brothers, and Indigo, the Rebel-hating, outspoken youngest of the Hamiltons, whose outspokeness is more straight up rudeness. There was an assassin who tried to kill Geneva and her baby Angelina, but she had fooled him and he'd been arrested, charged with attempted murder, and sent in irons to DC to be interrogated about the Klan, for whom he works. But he escapes. He has been observing the household and waiting for his opportinity to kill. He is well satisfied when he sees not just Geneva, but also Indigo, go down. But Geneva just fell; so did Indigo but the bullet traveled around her head, plus just before that, because of her proximity to Geneva when Geneva, fell, she was on the way to falling and her ankle turned under her, resulting in a severe sprain. Her treatment is necessary but in those days, for a woman, a bit alarming. Flannon is assigned as her bodyguard. The setup for her recovery frustrates and angers her, as does her medical treatment, and she rebels against it. She feels like Maudie and Tommy already put her through enough Will the last unwed Hamilton family member fall for the last of the Sullivans still in the valley, or will they nearly kill each other? When Laura goes home with Mrs. Sullivan - who came to help Douglass with her delivery of the first male Hamilton baby - she has a surprise to share when she comes home.
Flannon Sullivan is a TDH Irish-Mexican Rebel from Texas. His expertise is training horses and building houses. He stands up to Indigo Hamilton because as the youngest of six brothers he understands her. Indigo Hamilton is the only girl and the youngest with three brothers. She is beautiful, fiesty, bossy, and hates Rebels. All three of her brothers married Southerners. After being jilted at the altar she focuses her anger toward Flannon who she blames for everything. The back and forth between them is hilarious. When Flannon kisses Indigo she feels a "spark" and she's confused. She finally realizes that he's been there for her through all her trials and she loves him. Once they decide to secretly get married, she discovers happiness. Love's Valley was a magnificent place that blossomed from the ashes of the Civil War.
Set in the Reconstruction era after the U.S. Civil war, laugh, cry,and learn
love the Love's Valley series (5 books) by Carolyn Brown. She is a favorite author of mine, but this series is the one I have enjoyed the most.
It takes place as President Andrew Johnson struggles with the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. But the author's focus isn't on the politics. Her focus is on the everyday people who are struggling to adjust both in the North and in the South. How does a family return to normal.? What is normal? And, since she is a romance author, how do people from both sides find love together? And, yet, the series is written with characters who are quick witted and you periodically laugh, cry and care along the way!
It was quite enjoyable reading all these varied stories of this family. Each book told the story of one of the grown offspring of the Yankee Hamilton family finding love with a member of the Rebel Sullivan family, with a lot of twists and turns along the way. Read them in order to appreciate the saga of these two families. The only thing I had a problem with was the use of the words "hung" and "hanged" in the last book. When I was growing up, we learned the difference. Pictures were "hung" and people were "hanged." It's just one of those annoying things that grammarians begrudgingly learn to live with. Still, they were very interesting stories filled with adventure, heartache, and love.
Thanks to Carolyn Brown for fleshing out five stories about how to mesh Northern Yankees and Southern Confederates into loving couples. C B’s heart and understanding of people and what it is that allows those people to become happy and loving and accepting of everyone is the meat of these five stories. I also learned much about geography and the Civil War. I didn’t review each of these five books, because I am not as good a writer as are many reviewers. Even so, I loved these stories.
Like I said before, the first book was disappointing. But I kept going. And it was so worth it. I love these characters. And there's so many. How does an author keep up with them? Each personality is an individual. This is normal in life, but tricky in a novel. No problem here.
I was intrigued to see how Indigo fared. She did well. Just had to use that thick skin of hers to face the music when it was her turn. Lol So well done. Thank you Carolyn.
I love this one the best because it had the most happy endings out of all the books. It was a good future for all the couple's the newlyweds and the ones married already. I was happy mostly for Ms. Laura she deserved a happy ending after being widowed for so long. The children had all moved on to start their own lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed every love story in this series. Each unique and different. And I like how I learned more about the established characters in each new romance. I want more! Please tell me this isn’t the end! Carolyn Brown weaves a masterful love story and I can’t wait to indulge in more of her work.
Took forever to read. Kept falling asleep. Did not like Indigo and didn't want to hear her story. Her razor sharp tongue and foul temper caused me to lose interest often. I love Carolyn Brown books and this was probably my least favorite ever! I knew she would salvage it in the end but my goodness how I disliked the central character.
Enjoyed every chapter. Makes one realize you must never be closed minded. That everyone has worth and we can all have different perspective. Agreeing to disagree. A five from me would be the maximum that I could award me.
Having issues with submitting my review. Liked the book and the constant changes that Carolyn Brown uses to present her bookz.
This story of Love’s Valley is a great finish to the saga of the uniting of the families of the North and the South. Each of the stories were great reads by themselves, but with this one we learn the “rest of the story.” This has been a truly enjoyable journey.
Carolyn Brown does it again. This was a fast paced good ROMance. I enjoyed the feisty characters and storyline. Indigo pretty resilient and Flannery seemed calm and always told her the truth every step of the way throughout their beginings of their love hate relationship. If you enjoy hea romance written by a Good author. This is your book
I've read many of Carolyn Brown's books with great pleasure. All have been very entertaining and allow for momentary escapes into others lives. Thank you for the twists and turns that keep us reading.
A book I truly loved.Romance & history the two combined.Characters are very good & very thought out.I enjoyed the concept.A large family, hundreds of years ago.A real page Turner. A must read for everyone.
This is a post Civil War story set in Pennsylvania where brothers marry southern sisters. Indigo dislike southerners but Flannon is helping rebuild. They fight and argue a lot. It was a good book.
I really enjoyed all the other books but this one was so long--got a little boring. There were all the arguments until they all ran together. However the worse part was the font couldn't be changed and was hard for me to read.
Wow, Now that's a great family story, filled with such good fun. I am very surprised by your story line. I have to agree again on your characters. It was a good read for sure. Thanks
Was not disappointed in the last book of the series.
It was a great read while it lasted. Wish there was another story to start. I always get a feeling of self satisfaction after finishing a book by Carolyn Brown. She really knows how to tell a story and make it come to life.
I enjoyed the themes of post war reconciliation, love across boundaries and the sense of community of a large family beautifully portrayed. Thanks for hours of enjoyment.
Now why did I know from the start that spitfire Indigo would partner with loud mouth Flannon? So at the very end, 5 marriages, 5 new babies and Loves Valley is filling up with love and laughter
Oh, my goodness! This book really topped off the series! All the news shared in the epilogue and who would have guessed Laura's would be the most unexpected! Loved this series!!
Thoroughly enjoyed series - I read in order. Enjoyed each one immensely. This last one was a little harder. Indigo is very very hard to like, but I finally came around and it wrapped us the series nicely. If you like easy romance with a little excitement thrown in, I recommend this series.
Ms. Brown has the ability to transform you to a different place and time. I don't want to spoil anything so just enjoy another one of her fantastic novels!
That young lady, fortunately, had some redeeming features, or someone might have locked her in the attic. Good story, usual. You're a definite treasure.
This is the last book of this series. I really enjoyed reading each and everyone of these books. I just loved, how each one found their true love. Funny how opposites attract.
